Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of V-MODA Vibe Duo In-Ear Noise-Isolating Metal Headphone with Universal One-Button Mic (Nero)Customer Review: BUYER BEWARE: These earbuds WILL fail. Summary: 1 Stars
Mark my words: It's only a matter of time before one or both sides of the headset will fail. Everything is peachy until that happens, which would explain the positive reviews that can be found.
I am willing to be that many of those positive reviews were posted after owning these earbuds for a short time but before giving them a chance to fail, which seems to be inevitable in my judgement.
The only saving grace for these things is the 1-year warranty, and possibly Amazon.com's return policy.
That said, these earbuds are great if it wasn't for the poor durability. At $[...] one should be able to expect them to last more than a few months at best.
Until build quality improves, I simply cannot recommend these iPhone headphones.
EDIT 11/24/08
Well, I waited until this revision to return my original set (from my review). I got the replacement pair of earbuds with the revised plug, and they are worse than the first. Not in terms of durability (I haven't had them long enough to test for that) but with initial quality!
My right earbud, for some reason or another, exerts a lot of pressure on my eardrum, as if the air pressure is not escaping upon insertion into the ear canal. The left earbud is fine. I contacted V-moda and they immediately issued me a shipping label to return them on their dime this time.
You're not gonna believe this, but the 2nd set of replacement earbuds have the SAME EXACT PROBLEM! It's as if they sent me my old earbuds again! I can't believe it. I've lost my patience with this company now. I might send them in for a 3rd replacement, but a this point it's really a waste of my time and money...
Don't make the same mistake I did and stay away from these earbuds...wait for the new Apple In-Ear Headphones, that's what I'm doing...
Customer Review: Stylish but OK Summary: 3 Stars
The headset was the first to provide integrated mic/button for the iPhone, which was requested since the launch of the Apple phone. After having used Etymotics and Shure for my iPod and computing needs, the sound isolation provided by those two was far superior than what I'd call "faux" sound isolation on the V-Moda. That has been a concern for me since I discovered passive sound isolation, since it allows me to enjoy more details of the music at a lower volume and with less interruption from outside noises.
In terms of sound quality, it is good, definately better than the bundled headbuds. The small level of isolation helps to enjoy better music, but it does not provide the same level of intimacy that the Shure and Etymotics do. This becomes apparent in subway rides and flights, with constant noise. The V-moda just don't seem to try much in this area. It is well built, the cloth exterior is an interesting touch and helps reduce the regular "thud" of in-ear headphones.
My gravest concern is that not four months since I got them, the right bud (the one with the mic and button) just died. At first I had thought the new rips I had made were coded as Mono, but after testing with other audio and video files on the phone I realized that it simply ceased working. Not with the long-drawn "loosening" of the wire like the Shure happened with heavy use; it just stopped working. The warranty does not cover shipping and whatnot, and I just don't feel like giving them business for a sub-par product advertised as the best in the world.
EDIT: V-Moda promises to replace defective products within a year of purchase, but it won't cover the expenses of shipping: to or FROM them. I'm not sure if my standards may be high, but why even deal with them if the're not financially responsible for their defective products?
Customer Review: Good Headphones, but they keep breaking! Summary: 4 Stars
I've had my VModas Vibe Duos for quite awhile and I am definitely impressed with the sound quality of the headphones. The only problem I have is the left ear phone goes out! The customer service is good, they replace my headphones without any problems, but its a hassle waiting weeks for your fav headphones to get back.
I use my headphones while commuting to and from work with my iPhone, keeping my iphone in my pant pocket or coat pocket. After a couple months each set of headphones had the same problem, one of the ears went silent. Im pretty sure it has something to do with the wiring around the headphone jack. I know VModa has replaced the casing around the headphone jack since the first model. It looks stronger than the oringal design, but I came across the same results, one earphone goes out and no more music.
When on a noisy train, I can hear nothing but tunes, the isolation works real well. As far as sound quality, the highs and mids are nothing to go crazy about, still very good, i cant complain. The bass is extremely nice on these buds, couldnt ask for more out of an in-ear set of headphones.
They come with 6 sets of earbuds - 2 small, 2 med, 2 lrg, and a sweet little rosary style case. You should be able to find one to fit snuggly into your ear.
The mic has never failed me, I talk on it all the time and no one says they cant hear me. It takes a couple days to get used to talking with them on, you can hear yourself, not a big deal.
If you have an active lifestyle and purchase these headphones, expect to have to get them replaced. You will get them replaced no problems, no questions asked, but it will take a week or so - which is annoying. I would still recommend these headphones, i think they sound amazing. That's why I give it a 4.
Customer Review: The Perfect Headset Solution for iPhone Summary: 5 Stars
I was on the hunt for a good set of headphones that would fit my iPhone. I've tried several in the past, most just not measuring up in terms of sound quality, and I'm no audiophile. But when i got the iPhone, my demands were updated to include the fit for the slip iPhone jack. So when i finally landed on these babies, i was very pleasantly surprised. My first time using them was in the airport, and man were they perfect. I'll admit they don't block out ALL the sound, but i don't want that. I like to be aware of whats going on around me. So with the volume on medium, i could clearly hear my iPhone, but still was also aware of my surrounding (just in case some crazy wanted to jump me or something). When my first call came in while using these, i was stunned, almost didn't know what to do. But then i pressed the button on the mic once, and was on my phone call (the music faded to black). The caller seemed to have no idea i was on a headset, and i could hear them perfectly. When the call was over, i pressed the button again, and my music picked up where it left off. Also, on tap of the button pauses the music, and two taps skips the track. It would have been nice to have a function that goes back to the beginning, or the previous song, but I'm not gonna be the one to complain about every little thing. All in all i like this headset very much, though the price was a lot for me to swallow. But if I'm gonna get everything out of my $400 phone, i may as well have good accessories to go with it. And as for comfort (the main reason i wanted new ones, as the Apple version SUCKS), it's awesome. I wore it pretty much my entire journey (~8 hours) including sleeping on the flights, and my ears had not a single complaint. Please try these. If you don't have the iPhone, get the regular Vibes. Its a great design.
Customer Review: Requires a little bit of playing to get the right fit Summary: 3 Stars
I just got the V-MODA Vibe Duo earbuds/headset. I have to admit, I'm no audiophile so I don't care all that much about the quality of the music. I do use my iPhone mainly as a PHONE so I wanted a comfortable headset. Not into bluetooth, so I wanted a wired set that had a good mic and easy access answer button.
I'm slightly disappointed. So far, on all the calls I've made I've had a hard time finding the little answer button on the mic. It's not as convenient as the iPhone headsets that came with the phone. However, the earbuds themselves are infinitely more comfortable, which is the main reason that I purchased these.
I will admit, I had to go through nearly every size/color of the earbuds to find a fit that works. I would recommend that if you purchase these headphones that you do just that. I realize that the clear and the black silicone covers are supposed to just be a different "stylistic" thing, but I think that they actually fit differently. I also almost completely wrote off the large size, thinking that they looked way too big, but that's what I ended up being happiest with. Honestly, they're not a perfect fit (one of my ears is apparently slightly smaller/larger than the other), and I wish that they had in between sizes that you could order as an additional accessory.
The case I could honestly do without. It's tiny and I can see it easily getting lost in my purse. I'll probably just use my iPhone case or another small zippered bag that's easier for me to dig out of the depths of my bag.
I've read that a lot of people felt that they weren't durable, but since I've only had the set for a couple of days I cannot attest to that. I'll possibly have to amend my review as I use them more often.
