Customer Review: Good for the price

First off, let me say that I am a relatively-new audiophile. I own the Etymotic ER6i and really like their sound signature. That said, this is not a comparison between these two headphones as they are different types (canalbud vs. IEM), but I might reference the ER6i in this review as it is probably my all-time favorite earphone in terms of sound quality and isolation.
On to the review:
I bought these earphones as my everyday kickaround pair. I wanted something with reasonably-good sound quality, some degree of isolation (for use in public places and the city bus), durability (I've broken many pairs of cheap earbuds), and a mic/remote control (the remote control was more important since I use these with an iPod touch, making the microphone useless).
Sound quality:
This is often a make/break point for most earphone users (after all, earphones are designed with one purpose in mind: listening to music). Compared to the iPod earbuds, it is a noticeable improvement. The most prominent feature is the significant increase in bass. If you listen to rap/hip-hop, you will love these. There is bass and plenty of it! However, if you listen to a broader range of music (rock, alternative, jazz, blues, classical), you may find these to be too bass-heavy. I personally find that they lack detail in the mid/high range (though in this respect, the ER6i is hard to beat!) and that the bass is excessive. But overall, the sound quality is good (much better than most cheapo earbuds).
Isolation:
Here I am comparing these to the ER6i again! When you compare these to a true in-ear earphone (like the ER6i), the isolation is almost nonexistent. If you are planning on using these in a noisy environment like an airplane, you'll want an IEM (you know which one I'll recommend :D ). However, these do have more isolation than a conventional earbud (which by design has no isolation). This allows you to hear your music in a noisy environment without turning the volume all the way up, but it won't block out environmental noise. This makes them a good choice for situations where you'd want to hear what's around you (for example, riding a longboard on a busy street) where the total isolation of an IEM would be dangerous. This also means that they are easier to insert/remove when someone wants to talk to you.
Durability:
Some reviews may tell you otherwise, but these seem to be fairly durable. The earbud housing is made of aluminum alloy, and the cables are thicker than most earbud cables and are reinforced with Kevlar (the material used for bulletproof vests). Nevertheless, I am careful with them and I always use the case that they came with when I stick them in my pocket. Plus, I paid $14.99 plus shipping (I ordered a refurbished pair, which was sealed in the box and appears to be brand new) which means that I can easily replace them if they break or I lose them.
Mic/Remote Control:
I haven't used the mic yet (these earphones also work with my LG enV touch, though I use them primarily with my iPod), but the remote control button works on my 2nd-generation iPod touch for pausing/changing songs (click it once to play/pause, twice to skip forward a song, and three times to skip backward a song). This is nice because it allows me to change songs without taking my iPod out of my pocket (good for public transit, bad neighborhoods, etc).
So in conclusion, these are an excellent pair of earphones for everyday use, especially if you are upgrading from the Apple earbuds, but serious listeners might find them to be too bass heavy and the isolation might be lacking for some situations. In this case, I'd recommend spending the extra $$ on the Etymotic ER6i.
