Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of URC R6 Learning Remote ControlCustomer Review: Great product!! Summary: 5 Stars
First off, let me say I own a URC MX 900 series, which requires a computer application to program it. You attach the remote via a cable to a PC, launch the application, make any changes, and download the new program to your remote. It is an unbelievably good remote, and does more than I can possibly describe. However, it costs $400 and up.
So, I was skeptical that the R6 was 1) useful and 2) easy to program.
Wow, was I SHOCKED. Not only is this inexpensive at under $20, but it is AWESOME! It learned my entire DVD player and TV in, no kidding, less than one minute once I read the very clearly written and nicely illustrated user's guide. To do it, I turned my TV on, and then I hit TV/Enter on the R6, then started at #1 and worked my way up to #9. At #3, the TV turned off. That's it, it was done and I was able to totally control my TV. Did the same thing with my VCR (VCR/Enter, by #2 it was programmed). Really, it took 10 minutes to read how to do it, and 1 minute to program two separate devices.
Next, I programmed one of the 4 macro buttons to go through my favorite channels. Now I press "A" once, it goes to channel 12, push it again, it goes to 30, again to 38, and again to 54. I could have done as many channels as I wanted, but I only watch four. It was SO easy, it is hard to believe.
Then, I used button B to run a macro to turn on my VCR and push PLAY automatically.
Button C and D will get used as soon as I have a need for them. Maybe C to make coffee, D to vacuum the family room?
It has a Couch Mode, a clever feature that turns off the remote if it gets wedged between the cushions and the buttons are pushed in. After 30 seconds of continuous pushing, it turns itself off to save batteries (it uses 2 "AA", supplied free in the box).
If there are any negatives, it may be that it will learn only about 40 commands. But that was not an issue with me, because it knew my VCR and TV, so I didn't have to teach it many.
But I did have to teach it (called LEARN) how to use my cable remote to change the channels, as there is no universal code for Comcast Digital remotes. So, I followed the instructions, pointed the units head on at each other, and voila, it assigned an R6 button I chose the same corresponding button on my Comcast remote. This took about 2 minutes.
So, overall, this is a WINNER. If you need more than 40 learned buttons, which I find hard to believe, get the URC R7. However, the R7 has way too much stuff going on for my taste. I love my R6 and would highly recommend it, even to technophobes. Its manual is so easy to read, and repeats itself over and over for clarity, that I can't see anyone not being able to program this unit.
Get this and you will not be disappointed.
