Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Uniden TRU9485-2 5.8 GHz Digital Cordless Answering System with Dual Keypad and Extra Handset

Customer Review: Overall, a very good buy
Summary: 5 Stars

OK, I studied and studied the Amazon reviews, then bought this phone a couple weeks ago. And after using it for 10 days or so, I have to say: THIS THING DOES EVERYTHING BUT MAKE MY COFFEE. And I have the feeling if I read the instructions again, I'd learn that it does that, too!

It was incredibly easy to set up--and I have no knack for electronic stuff. Amazingly, the instructions are extremely well written (and I'm a writer!) and completely easy to follow. It's surprisingly solid-feeling, not cheapo at all. The sound quality is beautiful (I was kinda shocked by that, after reading a couple of the reviews), both for me and for the people I talk to. Granted, I have a fairly small apartment--don't know how it would work if I, like, took it out on the street or something. There's a very big display that shows how many messages you have, and you can set it to beep to alert you (no thank you). BIG display screens everywhere. And I've never had a phone that has a "speaker" setting on the handset itself, not just the base. Very convenient when you're sitting on the couch listening to Time Warner's endless "hold" loop...

Stuff I never thought of before--like copying the settings from one handset to the other--are simple and take about two seconds to do. The markings/graphics on the handset are so clear that you pretty much don't even need to read the book to figure stuff out. The answering machine just couldn't be easier to set up, operate, etc. And the book even has several little charts to cut out to carry in your wallet for remote operation. I mean, these guys thought of everything. (Note: I haven't had the occasion to use the "Caller ID/Call Waiting" yet, but I"m sure that's excellent too. I'll update if it isn't.)

Ok, the volume on the ring could be a little louder, maybe, and I'm not sure about the fact that it first rings with the "regular" ring you set, then ALSO rings with any personalized ring you've set for a certain person (I probably just need to find out how to change that), but I love the fact that when my mom calls, I hear "Home Sweet Home." ;)

Update: Ok, I had the phone for a couple of years, and for the most part it was terrific. Then it started to play my messages to anyone who called (and oh, the hilarity that ensued... NOT!), so I swapped it out for a newer model, which has also been basically terrific. All in all, I never had a problem with range (great), volume (great), or any of its other features. I have to say, I'd buy pretty much anything from Uniden, I felt like the quality was very high....

Customer Review: Very good phone system; some room for improvement
Summary: 4 Stars

Let me begin by saying that I am very pleased with my cordless phone system. I have the base and 5 handsets. I shall also say that the system is installed in a three story house with concrete block walls.

I will now briefly state some positives, without overextending myself since others have already posted comments on most of them:

- Setting up extra handsets was very easy, just put the extra handset on the base, wait about 5 seconds and presto!
- Good sound
- Good range
- Nice intercom feature.
- Easy, large and helpful phonebook
- Good answering system and a great option where you can listen to your messages from any phone and know when you have messages from any phone.

All the other bells and whistles are there and then some. You can download the manual for free from Uniden's website for all the list of features, if you want to compare with other options.

Now, what I would call suggestions or ideas to address in the next iteration of this product.

1.- Although it is advertised that 5.8 GHZ phones do not have interference from common household items, I found that the phone next to my wireless broadband router did suffer some interference and crackle.

2.- In addition, some phones did suffer from noise, but as I said, my house is made of concrete blocks and some phones are in different floors. However, this brings me to my main suggestion. Make it so that people may add additional base units in different places connected to a phone land line. This may increase the range of the system as a whole, increase clarity and at the same time permit the integrated functionality of the whole system.

As it is, I may not add another base in the farthest room and keep it working with the other base and handsets. That is a serious letdown for me.

3.- Intercom. (i) I cannot announce anything over the intercom. I must page a unit, wait for that person to pick up and then talk. I think it might be useful to be able to just holler when dinner's ready or not to forget something before coming up without having to force someone to stand up, pick up and then talk. Make it an option. (ii) I cannot use the speaker feature with the intercom.

4.- Monitor. You can monitor another unit, but is not nearly as efficient as a dedicated baby monitor. The latter pick up sound much better.

Alas, those are my comments on this product. In general, it is very good, among the best of several in the market with similar features. Good luck!

Customer Review: Would Never Purchase Again
Summary: 2 Stars

I've never written a review before but experience with this one makes me wanting to share a little.

I am a pretty savvy shopper in a way that I do my research and read reviews online before making a purchase. After all the rave reviews about this one, I decided to give this phone and the Uniden brand a try after tossing out a Panasonic 900 Mhz after owning it for more than 6 years. There are many good features about this phone, it

comes with 2 handsets and plenty features (ringtones, DND (do not disturb) and whatnot)

looks slick (a little better looking than the Panasonic one we were also evaluating)

does conferencing, i.e. can use both handsets at the same time

has a pretty good voice quality

doesn't seem to interfere with home networking (I am on a G network)

Now after owning it for 4 months, at first the caller ID stopped working. Then the base is acting weird and doesn't ring properly. The answer machine stopped working ... you get the picture.

I contacted the customer service. While responsive (I give them point for that), they were pretty ignorant when it comes to my comments in the email. Even though I told them what procedures I've tried from looking up their web, the representative disregarded all my comments and basically just tried to run me through the same stuff I've already tried. After that, they give me a number to call (note can't even do it through online support) in order to replace my unit. After I called the lady tried to make me go through the same procedure again until I told her that I've done all that. Finally she took my credit card for shipping and gave me a fax to fax my receipt to. I did that and then got no response. I called back and they told me that they never received my fax. I then scanned the receipt and emailed one of their representatives. Now 2 weeks after I still don't know what the status of my replacement order is, not to mention that I didn't get a response for at least two inquires. As of this morning, my phone, after less than half year, is completely dead (can't even power on). My cheapest phone, bought at some dollar store for 10 bucks, lasted longer than that.

Needless to say, this is probably the last time I will ever purchase a Uniden product and this phone, by the way, has made into my record book as the shortest lived electronic I've ever purchased (except maybe ones that simply didn't work out of the box).

Customer Review: Uniden 5.8GHz Phone system
Summary: 4 Stars

I have two of these Digital 5.8 GHz systems so they don't interfere with my Wireless G router, with addtional phones added around my home. I have had both systems for the past 18 months so lots of WW phone calls since in semiconductor IC sales. One is the 2 line system as reviewed here which I use from my home office, the other system is for our personal home phone and it is the TRU9465 with 2 extra handsets. Both offer exceptional clarity via the phone or with speakerphone on. I call around the world globally since in the semiconductor industry and always ask if the clarity is good. I have had folks from Canada, UK, GmbH, China, Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, the East Coast and so on tell me that they thought I was around the corner it was that clear. I was on AT&T phone lines at one time, now on Comcast Digital Voice which is VoIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol)which should get kudos as well.

The feature set is excellent, especially with the new TRU9465 having the ability to have 100 numbers in memory and two numbers per memory location. Could there be more features or more intuitive features, probably, but for the basic job of making/receiving phone calls, call waiting, 3 way conference calling, caller ID it does the job really well. The fact that you can use them as walkie talkies or room monitors (why buy a seperate baby monitor??) is icing on the cake. I see that Uniden has now come out with even a newer generation and these units are discounted. Amazon's price is still cheaper then even buying from the Uniden site directly since the units come with the full 1 year warranty versus the 3 month warranty from Uniden for the refurbished units which are the same price as Amazon for new. See this web link http://www.unidendirect.com/itemlist.cfm?cattype=prd&catid=53

I have been so impressed with these Uniden phones that I made the decision to pick up these phones for our new sales office to work with Vonage VoIP. Let you know how that works out. It was gratifying to hear my IT person come in and say that he thinks Uniden is making some of the best phones to use these days since he uses them as well at home and his business.

Customer Review: Almost perfect .. 4-1/2 stars.
Summary: 4 Stars

Uniden has almost got the perfect cordless phone here with the TRU9485 (2). I am very satisfied with this item. Like most others here, I have specific requirements and wish lists for a multi-handset cordless phone system. After exhaustive research into available features and consumer reviews, I decided on this model. I have had the phones only about 3 weeks, but I am satisfied and impressed with the functionality, features and ease of setup. The comfortable feel and modern (techy) look of the phones is a bonus.

My fav. features are :

a) copying one or all phonebook entries to other handsets or base. (minor peeve: can't copy FROM base unit.
b) hold & intercom & mute
c) room monitor
d) speakerphone/keypad on Base unit
e) answering machine; also records memo or conversation
f) cool orange back-lighting/keys
g) setting the time-date on one handset, sets all units.
h) worked right out the box ( after 5 hr. charge ) ;

I won't review all the plus's for this phone; just too many and you probably already know all features. So, I would like to list my little peeves:

1) Remote Handsets don't start ringing from incoming call until after second ring on Base Unit. (Panasonic's ring simultaneously)

2) Speakerphone function does NOT work in intercom mode, only in call mode. (Panasonic does)

3) Base Unit does NOT have changable ringer-tone, only handsets have changable ringer-tones. Since I leave handset in Base, I turned Base ringer volume OFF, and set handset to desired ring-tone.

4) Base-Unit speakerphone clarity & volume is great on MY end. Others report that I sound clear but, somewhat low-volume and distant on their end.

5) As others have mentioned, ringer-volume has only 3 settings [ OFF , LOW , HIGH ] on either handsets or base. (Panasonic has 5 volume levels plus OFF)

I recommend this almost perfect cordless phone system.
