Before you buy any scanner, research what you are trying to listen to and what the scanner is capable of picking up.
This scanner picks up analog trunking but it does not pick up digital trunking. Since I only needed analog trunking, this was a much more afforadable option for me. I use it to listen in on local police action and almost always get a kick out of what I hear.
It did take a lot of trial and error for me to figure out how to program this scanner since it was the first time I had listened in on a trunking system.
Since it is handheld, I can carry this one around the house and out to the car.

This model is great for scanning trunked systems (800mg). It has an unbeliveable amount of power included. I am picking up freqs over 30 miles away. It is easy to mix conventional and trunked systems. It has a steep learning curve however, you need to use it for a while before settling on what and how you will enter the systems. You need to do the planning they suggest. Suggest you use radioreference.com(free) to get data, you don't need to subscribe to anything else. This model is half the size of my old Bearcat with 30 conventional channels. You won't be disappointed.Customer Review: NOT APCO-25 capable!!!!!!!

I agree with all positive reviews here -- great unit for the price.
However make sure you're area doesn't use APCO-25 (P-25), this item will be worthless to you. This scanner decodes all sorts of trunking systems, but not the ONE I needed. Go figure.
I gave it 2 stars since the description said nothing about this, it is effectively less-than-half useful to me -- but if I DIDN'T need APCO-25, this would be my first choice handheld scanner, great quality scanner.

Which is, don't use the keypad to program, buy the software! Once you get past that and setup your individual systems and play with the different features, it's great. I like being able to just touch one button and turn off a system I don't want to hear or vice versa. I like the backlight on squelch feature and reception with the provided rubber duck is pretty good. I upgraded the antenna, but only noticed a small improvement. Wish the speaker was a bit louder, but that is the only negative thing I can think of.Customer Review: BC246T a very nice scanner.

I think this is a very nice scanner but before trying to hand program it buy and use the software and save your settings to a file in case you mess up. Then play around with manual programming. It is really easy to program this scanner once you figure out how it is suppose to be done. I love this scanner and take it everywhere and wished I would have bought it sooner. It will do everything you want it to and more. I am not sorry that I bought it..Now I want to get the BCT15 for the house...Cheers..Keithmj
