Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Steering Wheel Anti-Theft Alarm with Lock and RemoteCustomer Review: very good for the price Summary: 4 StarsI bought another anti-theft device before I bought this one. The other one went on the brake or the clutch, and it was not nearly as good as this one, plus this one costs less. The best things about this product are that it is very easy to use, seems very sturdy, and it is very visible so that thiefs are likely to move on to an easier target. The batteries last quite a while, probably around 3-4 months for the device, and the battery in the remote has still not run out after several months.
Don't expect to be able to hear this alarm if it goes off when you are inside a building. The sound is not loud at all from outside the car, even when you are right next to it. Personally, I like this, because my parking space is across the street, behind and underneath another apartment building, so a loud alarm would bother the tenants, and I probably wouldn't be able to hear it anyway. If you are inside the car when the alarm goes off, then it does sound very loud, loud enough to make my ears hurt. That alone might be enough to make a car thief give up and leave the car. Also, the strobe light is not bright enough to be useful, except as an indicator that it recieved the signal from the remote.
One thing I don't like is that it does not fit tightly on my car's steering wheel, even after I added all the provided pads to make the grip tighter. (I have a Honda Civic.) However, even though you can turn the wheel, you can only turn it so far until it hits the part of the wheel that connects the outside to the center. I haven't tried to drive with it, but I imagine it would make it difficult to turn corners, so that is good enough to be a strong deterrent.
When the batteries in the device are low, it starts chirping around once per minute. Unfortunately the chirping is at full volume, so it is very annoying. Both times my batteries ran out, the chirping began as soon as I started driving. I thought of pulling over, but then realized I didn't have a tiny philips screwdriver, which is required to open the battery compartment. I don't know why so many manufaturers have switched to battery compartments held closed by tiny screws. The kind that snap shut are so much more convenient, especially for something like this.
The last thing I don't like is that you only have a minute after you press the button on the device before you have to activate it with the remote. This is fine when I'm travelling by myself, because it gives me enough time to exit and get my groceries out of the trunk. But if I'm giving someone else a ride, it gets a little trickier, and I imagine if I had kids it would be difficult. If you don't make it in time, it still locks the steering wheel, but the light and alarm won't go on.
These are relatively minor complaints, especially when I consider the price. The main thing is that it makes it more difficult to steal my car, even if the alarm is not set or the batteries have run out. It doesn't need to be installed, it's very easy to use, and it is cheap.
