Customer Review: Not 100% impressed...but has its selling points

I spend 5-6 hours everyday in the company vehicle delivering products to mostly residential customers, so a GPS is mandatory equipment in my line of work. My previous navigational device was an Insignia model with Internet connectivity (Google search, gas prices, etc.) so I was initially excited to upgrade to a well-known manufacturer like Tomtom.
It appears my excitement may have been slightly unwarranted. That is not to say the Tomtom 340 Live doesn't have exciting features, however those tend to get lost in dealing with the unit's pecularities. The most disappointing aspect of this offering was its speech functionality. While it does speak street names, the intervals at which it does leave me puzzled and frustrated. Many times you'll just hear "Turn right in a half mile" with no mention of what street on to which you'll be turning. It will eventually say the street name; once you're right at the intersection. At 45 miles per hour in unfamiliar territory, that can create problems for the driver. Sure, if you gaze at the Tomtom's display as you're approaching the upcoming intersection, everything should be clear. Taking that approach, however, basically negates the functionality of spoken street names.
Another disappointment is the IQ routes. I could not stand the way Insignia would route me, so Tomtom would certainly improve on this task, right? Wrong. Many times these so-called shortcuts are actually longer in distance and don't save any time. If you're driving a fuel-guzzling cargo truck (like I do) that not only fails to save you time, but increases your fuel bill.
I'll also say that the Internet connectivity is an overall disappointment. The three-month paid trial is nice, but $10 per month for what Tomtom offers is not a good value in my opinion. I've had periodic outages in acquiring an Internet connection. That means if you're relying on Google for POIs, or the built-in gas price search...you might as well head to the nearest Internet Cafe. Perhaps if Tomtom lowered the price to $5/month and made the service more reliable, they'd have a winner here. I cannot speak to the issue of traffic updates as my area is not served by this feature.
Now for the positives! First and foremost is the Tomtom's satellite acquisition time. It is blazing fast. In fact, I've never seen it take longer than five seconds after a cold start-up; and this is in heavy cloud cover as well. The next thing that impressed me was the unit's ability to point out so-called "safety cameras" and speed zones along major highways. It's always nice when a GPS can potentially save you hundreds in fines and make you a safer driver all in the same move.
The screen is very nice-looking and touch response is good. Navigating through the software interface is pretty straight-forward, with a few minor exceptions. I also like the PC connectivity for updating maps and assorted travel information. Tomtom has a great idea with the user map correction which other manufacturers should consider adopting in their product lines. Battery life isn't tremendous, but with a DC adapter included, I don't really see this as a pertinent issue for vehicular users.
The Tomtom 340s is certainly passable as a GPS. Most users will find it suitable for getting around an unfamiliar city, although you should be prepared to pay close attention to the screen. The Internet/POI features are robust (when they work) and might be worth $10 per month to those who will make frequent use of them. Where the Tomtom really excels, however, is in the hardware department. Everything runs quick and fluidly from a technical standpoint.
