Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of TomTom XL 340S 4.3-Inch Portable GPS NavigatorCustomer Review: Great GPS! Bugs have been fixed! Summary: 5 Stars
I can highly recommend this GPS to anyone who wants the best at a reasonable price. I would easily buy this over the Garmin 255W again.
The 340S has a wealth of customizable features and is easy to use. The fact that I can change road names and note blocked streets is worth the price of the unit alone! Map share is another great feature. I am on the road 8-10 hours per day in the same community.
I do think that a few features need to be added or changed, this also goes for the competitors as well since these drawbacks seem to be in countless GPS's now. 1) KILL the auto zoom! 2) Show more street names on the screen! 3) Let me add a road, at least to my GPS if you don't want me to share it.
Some people say that the "auto zoom in" feature is good but I say that intersections are where most accidents happen! Look for other cars and drive through the intersection with your eyes looking out the window where they need to be looking! There are plenty of arrows that tell us which way to turn and a voice that tells us which street to turn onto without looking at a zoomed in view.
I want to see street names on my GPS like it's a map. I use the GPS on trips once in a while but it is on every time I drive. I want to know what streets and parks are around me when I am just driving. Police and firemen for example want to know what streets are around them too at all times. Give us the option to display fewer street names on a trip but let us see them otherwise.
Now this is specific to TomTom since the competitors lack this feature TOTALLY! Let me add a road to at least my map. That way at least I can use a road that has been there for years or a highway that just opened up. Make this feature a map share if it is added by a large group. I already said I wanted map share so why not risk road additions too if I agree to it?
One BEWARE note now. BACKUP your 340S with your computer software BEFORE you use any TomTom software or connect to TomTom home! 2 Gigs is not enough memory for this device. As cheap as memory is now the device should have 3-4 Gigs. You will need to delete items on the 340S before you can upload safely other things. TomTom home does a good job of helping you pick features to delete like Spanish and French voices that you'll never use. I wish I could store the Mexican and Canadian maps on my PC until I need them too so I could free up more space. I had to reinstall ALL the data to my 340S because while I was doing a (free) map update that took several hours to perform, a storm came through in the last 2-3 minutes before the update finished, knocked out the power and the GPS failed to find the new map! The sky was clear when I started but map updates take hours! 3 more minutes and I would have been finished. BEWARE - backup data first with computer software!
Of course a power hit can happen on any GPS but map share data belongs to TomTom and is why I chose it over a Garmin 255W.
******Update*****
I have had this GPS for several weeks now and here is what I can add:
PROBLEMS!
The software has a few bugs in it.
1) I have to do a hard reboot (hold down power button for 15 seconds) every time I connect it to my PC for the computer to recognize the GPS unit. This is a bit irritating and I seem to reset some of my settings each time.
2) It is not as easy to block a road or modify a speed limit while driving as TomTom makes you think it is. When you block a road or change a speed limit the software guesses what you want and it may guess, no lets change that, it will guess the length of the change wrong! You should not modify these things while driving, even if stopped on the side of the road! The software guesses the lengths wrong. For example, you add a 50 mph speed to a rural road once you leave the city but the software changes the speed limit from one side of the county to the other side! ALL those streets in the city get change too. How many 50 mile long streets go through an urban and rural area without changing several times? TomTom thinks they don't. To modify roadblocks and speed limits you need to go home and use your computer and select "portions" to add or delete to modify these things.
The suction cup is just too small to hold the GPS without assistance. My GPS fell out in my car several before I fixed the problem.
The springs that hold the GPS in the mount are too weak! The GPS feel out in my hand several times adjusting it!
Well, all that seems bad doesn't it? And it is, but read on!
****** THE GREAT NEWS! ******
This GPS is worth every penny and the pros overshadow ALL negatives! All the problems have solutions - mostly.
The suction cup, just moisten it slightly and it seems to hold forever! I use the round plastic disk that came with the GPS and stuck it on top of my dash. The suction cup has not come off this disk since it was moistened. I just rubbed a napkin on a sweating drink I had in the car and then rubbed the moist napkin on the disk, attached the suction cup and presto! No more falling off. The GPS hangs over the front of my dash this way so I get the GPS a little bit of sun shade to see it better and it is out of my window so I can see things outside that might cause an accident. TomTom needs to make these disks just a bit thicker so they don't warp and the suction cup just a bit bigger. I like the design otherwise and don't want that to change at all.
The springs need to be stronger and a release lever needs to be added to the back of the GPS to push down on those springs to get the top one to release to get the GPS in and out of its mount. That would fix the problem. Till then, just be careful and hold the mounting behind the GPS when you adjust it and then it will never pop out of the mount. The springs are too weak if you just hold the GPS and it will eventually pop out when adjusting it.
When you go home and modify roadblocks and speed limits just be careful. Make sure you edit the change and make sure you un-highlight the portions of the street not affected by the change. I find a small unnamed street nearby and select to edit it instead of the street that I need to edit. Then when I start to edit I deselect that unnamed street and add the sections of road that I want the speed limit change to apply to. This way I don't have to deselect hundreds of miles of streets a night where the speed limit change doesn't apply, instead, I just add where the speed limit does apply. Remember, the software selects the ENTIRE street in the county to modify when you only want to modify a small portion of it.
On Roadblocks just remember to select where the road is FIRST blocked and not the entire road and block it only in the directions needed.
Too many people edit streets without knowing they are modifying the street from one side of the county to the other. TomTom needs to change the software to display in some way what the speed limits are for each section of road and where the roadblocks are. This way users can go in and modify just the sections that are wrong! Right now you can only see the section you are modifying and have no way to know what speed or correction is already there.
Turn off the section on the GPS that shares EVERYONE'S corrections! Thanks to poor software, people don't realize they are changing or adding the right speed limit where they're at but 10 miles behind them they are changing the correct speed limit to a bad speed limit. Also, on my GPS my corrections should overwrite everyone else's and tell me when these are different. I know my entries are right but I don't know about other peoples. Even TomTom can have wrong entries if speed limits change after they program them into the database.
With this GPS you CAN have the correct roadblocks and the correct speed limits. I have friends all the time that can't believe my GPS guided me around all the construction in Tulsa when theirs just takes them to it and they have to wait in traffic then turn around! I now have nearly all the section roads and Highways in the Tulsa area with the correct speed limit and correct construction roadblocks noted in my TomTom. I drive a lot so I update it a lot.
Oh and the routing, its great! Fast and accurate. It has even given me new ideas on how to get around.
Hands down TomTom is the best because it is the ONLY ONE that allows you to edit the map database! It is crude software and does have some glitches but it does work when you've got the data in it.
Just think of it this way, all the other GPS's are like a pair of old sandals. You'll get where you're going but you'll have to do ALL the walking and you'll stub your toes and get a few calluses and step on some rocks. The TomTom is like a mule, you may not get there in style but at least you'll be watching everyone else do all the walking while you're sitting down riding. You may have to kick the mule once in a while but at least your sandals are clean! And believe it or not, a mule is faster then walking! Especially when the mule knows what trails are open and the sandals just take you to a dead end where you need to turn around. (I couldn't use the other name for a mule here?)
TomTom gave birth to a new era in GPS software by adding MAPSHARE. Like all new life it has labor and birthing pains, but eventually the MAPSHARE will be on all the GPS's.
I would buy this GPS again over any competitor in the price range. I would buy it over most competition even in a higher price range!
UPDATE 2-11-10
TOMTOM continues to upgrade software and all bugs I know of are gone! In fact, they listened to useres and made the software easier to use. It is now very easy to add speed limits and road closures and change road names etc... Why buy any other GPS? Unless you want voice recognition or blue tooth, this is your GPS. I work on the road and my maps include roads that my friends with the competitors GPS don't have. In fact, every road I use is in my TOMTOM and I work in rural areas too. Nearly every street I drive on has the CORRECT speed limit in the GPS. I pass a speed limit sign on a rural road and I see my TOMTOM speed limit change.
Why pay for a map update? Just buy a new GPS like this one instead evey couple of years. GPS'untis are changing faster than the roads.
