Customer Review: Best GPS for the price
Summary: 5 Stars

I got this because it was on sale at Walmart and I am horrible at directions. I thought I could get by on Google and Yahoo Maps, but they were wrong almost 90 percent of the time and I got more lost coming home. I didn't know what GPS were and when I found out they actually pinpoint your position and get you where you need to go, I didn't know how I lived without this. I can't even count the amount of times I got lost going to a concert or job interview and I couldn't find it and worse I couldn't find home. So I spent all that money on gas and mileage on the car it hurt. So if your lost on the highway, all you need to do is press Home and it will provide you turn by turn directions to get you home. It has great updated maps that are pretty recent, but you might want to update them provided by their software and other people adding streets. My mom got a different brand of GPS and hers was more confusing and not accurate at all. This GPS is very clear and easy to understand and very updated compared to hers. I would definately recommend this if you are a person with horrible sense of direction like myself. If you think Google maps are fine, think again!! TRUST ME!

Customer Review: Great Product...
Summary: 4 Stars

Purchased unit several days ago after an exhaustive internet search(I drive my wife crazy with the research)Am very pleased so far with it. It is very easy to use out of the box and located the satellites on my initial startup in less than 20 seconds, have driven around and no problems with the suction mount, I use a stylus from my phone to click on the menues and it works great voice is loud and clear and can be heard in car with radio at "normal" levels. People who complain about not understanding the text to speech really makes no sense, the voice is synthesized how could it possibly correctly pronounce every street name in the USA? BTW if you glance at the screen it tells you the name of the street. Cant wait to use it in a totally unknown city, it has shown me what I consider to be longer routes to destinations but if I was unfamiliar with the area I would be happy it got me there. The only real complaint I had was with the HOME software, downloaded it from the TOMTOM site, it took several times before it recognized my unit and when I attemted to backup my data I had to try like 10 times before it finnaly backed up but other than that the unit is a true winner.

Customer Review: TomTom One XL-S
Summary: 4 Stars

I bought this unit for my roadster. I want to wander the backroads of Tennessee and North Carolina. Right away, I found it works far better than the built-in Navigation system in my other car. First, the roads are up to date and second, the units gives directions on even minor roads- and I mean the smallest, almost one lane roads. The built-in car unit will give directions only on major roads and has left me hanging up to 6 miles from my actual destination. But the TomTom is spot on. Our neighborhood street is shown correctly on the TomTom which suprised me because it is wrong on all the comupter maps that I have seen. The voice is loud and clear too. All this for about the price of an updated map DVD for my other car! Forget that.
The PC software works well and I like the options that allow me to download different start up screens and even voices. But the TomTom Home software takes a good while to initalize when first plugging the TomTom into the computer via the USB cord.
I was not able to pair my Blackberry/Wireless service to the TomTom in order to take advantage of the Plus services. That's the only reason for 4 stars instead of 5.

Customer Review: TomTom One XL-S makes navigating easier than ever
Summary: 5 Stars

The TomTom One XL-S turned out to be everything the advertisements claimed it would be. It is so easy to use. There was no softwear to load from a CD. Initially you just have to connect the navigator to your computers USB port, turn it on, and all necessary software is automatically downloaded and the setup starts, prompting you to answer a few basic, one-time only questions. Really, I was done in minutes and I could then program the GPS to find my first destination. I have only two gripes. One is the windshield holder that came with the TomTom was much too short. If I had used that holder I would never have been able to reach the navigator from my driver's seat position. I found that there is a longer one availble from TomTom which I purchased and which places the navigator much closer to my position making it much safer to reach and to see. The other quibble is that the built-in maps don't include National Wildlife Refuges. As a bird watcher, I really miss having that information available. But that drawback means it just takes a bit longer to program a destination to one of those refuges. All in all, I am most satified with my purchase.

Customer Review: Forget text-to-speech
Summary: 2 Stars

The principal reason for buying this model would be its purported ability to read aloud street names as you approach them. Unfortunately this feature no longer has practical use.

The text-to-speech feature requires having a computer voice downloaded to the XL-S unit. However, once you download the most recent version of the US/Canada map, there is no longer enough internal memory to store any of the computer voices.

You could, as I understand it, buy a 2GB SD card and download all applications, maps, and voices to the SD card, rather than using the presumably faster internal memory. There would of course be the extra expense of the SD card. Additionally, the slot is taped over on the XL-S; it is not clear if it is actually supported.

I attempted to "discuss" this with TOM TOM support, and instead, after repeated exchanges, wound up with the predictable links to inapplicable pages and bureaucratic barriers.

My conclusion: don't buy this model for the advertised text-to-speech capabilities. You would have to sacrifice access to the latest US/Canada maps in order to be able to use that feature.
