Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of TomTom ONE XL-S 4.3-Inch Widescreen Portable GPS NavigatorCustomer Review: TomTom One XL-S 4.3 inch GPS Summary: 2 Stars
A fine unit in many ways: fairly compact size, easy operation, good screen size and brightness, and low price. However, it's miserable in the two most important criteria: map and directional accuracies. About half of the destinations turn out to be up to 1/2 mile inaccurate. Occurring much less often, though still bothersome, is that a road may be incomplete, missing, or inaccurate. Directions are quite often poor. They'll take me a good bit out of the way or down an incredibly narrow street or through an extremely small one-lane tunnel before finally getting me where I want to go. I kept the unit for a combination of reasons. First is that I wanted a GPS much more than I needed one, which made me willing to accept some shortcomings in exchange for a relatively low price. The price is very low compared to a Garmin. I wanted the multi-stop/waypoint feature, again at a lower price than the new Garmin that has the same feature. The key reason that caused me to keep the unit is the Tomtom MapShare feature where I and other owners can update the maps as we find errors, which I hope will produce greatly improved accuracy as time passes. Hopefully, these improvements will combine with future map and programming updates from Tomtom to eventually give me a highly accurate device instead a marginally accurate one.
Customer Review: DO NOT USE THE MAC SOFTWARE FOR THIS DEVICE Summary: 4 Stars
I Like the GPS unit. I like the tomtom Windows software.
However I am a Mac user.
Here is the problem:
If you are a Mac user, when you first install the tomtom software on your Mac (tomttom HOME) and connect your tomtom XLS to the Mac, totmtom HOME will recommend a tomtom OS/firmware update. IF you allow this, tomtom HOME for the Mac will install the WRONG or FAULTY tomtom firmware/OS update. After that, your XL S WILL NO LONGER HAVE A FUNCTIONAL COMPUTER GENERATED VOICE. The recorded human voices will still work, but the COMPUTER generated voice will no longer work. The computer generated voice is the whole reason you purchased the XL S over the XL; it is the computer generated voice that reads street names and warnings aloud to you; the pre-recorded voices cannot do this.
Bottom line, if you have only a Mac, do not get this device until tomtom corrects this issue. If you have windows access, then you are fine.
I corrected this issue by opening tomtom HOME in Windows, then deleted the tomtom OS/Firmware from the GPS device, then performed an update within tomtom HOME to replace the tomtom GPS OS/Firmware. Once I did this, everything worked fine again and I had a functional computer voice.
Customer Review: Good First GPS Summary: 4 Stars
Just like the instructions say "you can use right out of the box".
As I like jumping over fire, I purchased the TOMTOM One XL-S two days before venturing out on a 2000 mile road trip (Michigan to South Carolina). All in all I was pretty impressed with the directions provided, however in busy city traffic it is easy to get ahead of the unit. An annoying trait of the unit is if you intentionally get off the path (e.g. for gas) the unit keeps telling you directions to get back on course (a pause feature would be really cool). The unit is also not polite and will start talking when you are on the phone (a mute feature would be cool). The software interface works fairly well and I was able to develop a very complex itinerary which out of 12 locations it successfully directed us to 11. The maps are crude and many smaller details are missing (like rivers and some roads which have been around for 10+ years). I can only assume a minor map upgrade for $$ will fix the missing details. The time to destination feature works surprisingly well. We will be making another trip to South Carolina soon and I will be testing some of the other features.
Right now base on my experience I would buy this GPS unit again.
Customer Review: Worthless . . . Not worth the money Summary: 2 Stars
I bought this because I was looking for a cheap GPS to simply navigate wherever I needed to go. I've updated the maps several times, and whenever I go to type in an address, one of two things will happen. Either the street I select will have "no house numbers available for this street", or "house number not in range of street". Several times this happened when searching for a hotel on a major highway in Houston, and several times when in a small town. All times when I actually found the physical location by other means, I confirmed the address that TomTom cannot find. The POIs are horrible as well; very few are listed, and the categories they are listed under makes searching for them impossible. Estimated time of arrival is also HIGHLY inaccurate. A trip that normally takes me 2:50 driving the speed limit is estimated to take me 4:30 by TomTom's calculations. I looked into this, and TomTom uses an average speed of 62 mph on the highway, and about 20 mph when driving through towns. This is supposed to be an "average of all TomTom user's speeds when traveling." Attempted to use bluetooth for internet access, but it never worked with a blackberry. Punch line: don't waste your money on this horrible unit.
Customer Review: This thing sucks butt. Summary: 2 Stars
I brought this as an upgrade to my Magellan 2200t, and even through it had more features than my 2200t the directions were terrible. I know that any GPS device is not 100 percent on the money and in a lot of cases it is off a little. The Tomtom was often trying to make me take turns onto roads that I didn't have to take to get to my destination. One time I followed the directions to see where it would take me. I made a right and then just a little while later it told me to make a left. That left would have put me in a ditch and into the woods. And the deal breaker was the way I had to access the Point of Interests (POI). I now have a Magellan 4210 and while driving if I see a POI on the screen all that I have to do is tap the screen to view a list of all the POI in the area. Now with the Tomtom I would have to work my way to the menu screen to see something or find something of interest. Also in bright sun light forget about looking at the screen. And my Magellan screen changes from a daytime screen to a nighttime screen. But I will give them credit for a few things, free map updates, and you can customize the voices. I'm very happy with my Magellan 4210 and even happier Amazon allowed me to return the item.
