Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of TomTom ONE XL-S 4.3-Inch Widescreen Portable GPS Navigator

Customer Review: Likely my most disappointing electronics purchase in years
Summary: 2 Stars

I have now had this item for about a year. It has proven, repeatedly, to be a poorly designed and supported piece of equipment.

This model certainly isn't cheap, or entry level. Features as compared to its peers, it rates very well.

But it takes an excessively long time to locate its own position after being turned off (2-18 minutes).

Every single time it has requested to update itself, it will inevitably fail and turn the unit into a brick. This has now happened 3 times. Everytime the TomTom program accesses the unit, it corrupts the file structure and windows must repair it before you can use the device again (1 hour). Did I mention every update erases all your favorites and settings?

Don't think iPhone touchscreen either, the device routinely ignores your touch input or types everything 3 times.

The software on both the device and especially the desktop interface software provided are more glitchy than most beta programs and should be a complete embarrassment to any self respecting company.

This device is so slow to determine its own location that I revert to my ATT navigator on my cell phone, which is an immensely superior product in every regard.

For the positives, I like that you can add your own voices, create custom map colors and the extent you can customize the home screen. All of these items are definitely superior to the Garmin competition.

In summary, I will not be keeping this device. I will be eBaying it for a hellish loss and honesty wouldn't wish this cursed device on anyone. I will not purchase another TomTom device.

Customer Review: So far, so good
Summary: 4 Stars

I bought the Tom Tom One XL-S after reading a ton of reviews, and so far I haven't had any issues with it. Here are a couple of points, which I thought might be a hassle ( before purchase), but actually weren't.

1. As some reviewers pointed out, as soon as you install Tom Tom Home, you get a message saying that the 30day free map upgrade period has expired. I called up Tom Tom support, who were really helpful and guided me through an easy procedure to rectify the issue. All I was needed to do was fax/ scan my proof of purchase ( easy - just take a pic of the receipt with your digital camera and upload). The whole procedure to get the free updates took not more than 30 min.

2. I could install the new map update without deleting anything. I had even downloaded a free computer voice (Samantha - a female computer voice wasn't pre-loaded) with no space issues.

3. Some reviewers had written that there was no information about which voices had the capability for spoken street names. However, I did find a sheet inside the package giving instructions on which voice to use to enable this.

4. One negative point is that it did take a long time to install / copy any data from/ onto the device - around 25 min for a backup (which is recommended anytime you install anything new) and around 30- 40 min for the map upgrade. However, since I wasn't really pressed to use my laptop for anything else at the time, it didn't really bother me.

So far, so good..the reason for the 4 stars is that I still have to test out the GPS while driving to a new place, and will update accordingly.

TomTom ONE XL-S 4.3-Inch Widescreen Portable GPS Navigator

This was my 1st attempt at purchasing a portable GPS unit for my car.
I paid extra for next day delivery, another mistake. The unit arrived on time, but problems began when I started the set up procedure. Instruction booklet reads that the unit may be behind in map updates. Not to worry it says though, HUH. As I begin set up and download updates, the system tells me my unit is at least 2 map updates behind, but I can use the authorization number given for free updates for new units (WRONG). Each time I try to use this authorization number, I am directed to purchase the upgrade, which is not cheap by the way. I call customer service. The young lady proudly tells me that they have suffered some theft of updates for maps in the past and in order to curtail this. I need to file a grievance, get a reference number, send a fax with a copy of my receipt, long distance by the way and wait for a confirmation email and another autorization number to update my maps in my unit. Who wants such a hassle right out of the gate or box for that matter. Trust and believe, this unit goes BACK ASAP. I am not going to pay for such a hassle when I buy a brand new unit and am considered one of those people who steal updates. (that's exactly how I feel). I should have listened to my friends recommendation and bought a Garmin.
I suggest you do the same or continue shopping or you too shall have the same experience.

Customer Review: My adventures with TomTom...
Summary: 4 Stars

I have to admit it- I'm terrible with directions. I'm constantly getting lost, then calling my directional savvy father so he can figure out where I am & how I can get to where I need to be. I guess he got tired of hearing my panicky "I'm lost" voice, since I got this for Christmas.

Well, so far I've really enjoyed this product. It's a nice item, works easy & as long as you have some knowhow, you can easily personalize it with your own icons & maybe even make one of your own voices (I don't have a mic, so I can't do that). It's very good so far at getting me where I need to go.

I've only got a few problems with it- one of which isn't really the navigator's fault. First off, I noticed that if you let the unit sit for too long without powering it on or charging it, the power will drain from it. I'm not sure why it does this, but it's annoying. Secondly, I got irritated that there are so many extra charges on everything. They're not horrendously expensive all things considering, but a little bit of promo on the box would be nice. My third problem is well... TomTom's taken me through some pretty seedy neighborhoods- as in "lock your doors & try not to get shot" neighborhoods. That's not really anything that the company can help, though, so it's really not a true fault. I just recommend that if you are planning your routes, that you research it beforehand so you can try to reprogram the route so you don't get a nasty little surprise.

Overall, I love this machine. It did it's job when I used it & didn't get lost.

Customer Review: TomTom XL-S
Summary: 2 Stars

I purchased two XL-S units. One for me and one for my son for Christmas. While the screen is a nice size, the maps are outdated even though I have updated them several times on TomTom's website. Our local tollway is 400 feet misaligned. Another words, TomTom has me driving in a field for miles and then has me driving on the wrong side of the freeway for 1/2 mile before my actual location and the freeway align. This road has been there for two years. Leaving my neighborhood, it takes further into the subdivision before taking me out to the main roads. I travel in a large city with a very congested freeway, so I bought the model with Bluetooth so I could get traffic updates. Well it is not compatible with the AT&T/Apple Iphone. I called TomTom and they said they will email me if/when the Iphone is added. I will not hold my breath for the update to happen. The customer service rep wanted to make sure my call to him was a great experience. It would have been if my phone were compatible. My son tried his T-mobile phone and it wasn't compatible either. I think the unit should remember previous trips and take you the same way and quit trying to take you the long way every time. Yes I have my preferences set correctly. If I did not know my way around, this thing would have be going miles out of my way "every time". This feature needs to be updated. Overview: Maps are outdated, traffic needs to be compatible with any Bluetooth phone, needs to have a trip recall feature and quit leading you the longer way.
