Customer Review: Good Basic GPS w/Large Screen - Not Great, Not Bad
Summary: 4 Stars

The TomTom One XL is an inexpensive, entry level GPS. For the price, this is a great value and has some features that rival much more expensive units. For me, the range of features vs the draw backs puts the TomTom One XL firmly in the "Buy" category.

We bought this for my 67 year old mother because she has no sense of direction at all. Every time she wanted to take a trip to some place new, she would ask us to do a "MapQuest" route for her (she is also a technophobe). Since getting the TomTom One XL, she hasn't had to call us for directions at all.

We like that the unit was easy for my mother to program and use. The large screen is very clear and she has no trouble reading it day or night.

The major fault with this unit is that it does sometimes take the "long way" to places where we know much faster routes. Not really a problem since it always finds the destination, just not the fastest way there. As a side note, my very expensive, feature rich GPS that came built in my Minivan sometimes routes us the long way as well (not really sure why).

Recommended, remembering that this is an entry level GPS and it is very inexpensive. Also see the TomTom ONE 125 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator, we bought one of these for my daughter.

Customer Review: tomtom failed so did Best Buy
Summary: 1 Stars

This unit failed miserably on the first try out...We live in Henderson, NV, just outside las Vegas...our first itinerary was to Bolder City center about 15 miles away...the itinerary was supposed to take us from hwy 95 to hwy 93, but instead it directed us south on 95 towards Searchlight forty miles away...we of course stayed on the highway which becomes hwy 93...once we passed the instructed turn off, we expected to be warned of a route recalculation, but none came...as we approached Bolder City we were directed to make a right hand turn which I assume was to take us back to hwy 95...the right turn was into a trailer park...I took the unit back to Best Buy and ended up paying a 15% restocking fee which Best Buy is quick to tell you is explained on the back of your receipt...the receipt you received after you purchased the unit...I smell a class action suit coming and I will be first in line...By the way, the reason we did not get a recalculation warning is because the unit does not have automatic recalculation...how pathetic is that... Update to review...after an email complaint to Best buy, I was contacted by Best Buy and refunded the restock fee which I appreciate...regarding the moron comment, this was not my first GPS...I know the route recalculation command and did not receive one...when I returned it to Best Buy I was told that model did not have that feature...

Customer Review: Warning!
Summary: 4 Stars

Although I bought this at a good price, it definitely has its drawbacks. IF you choose to purchase this GPS, PLEASE, by all means, use the TomTom Home software (included with the GPS) to BACK-UP THE SOFTWARE ON YOUR GPS!! That was the 1st thing that I did. Secondly, I updated the Maps to the most current - good idea, right? Well, when I was done doing that, I suddenly ONLY had the default Guam map loaded. Although TomTom Home said that the US/Canada map was on the GPS, IT COULD NO LONGER BE ACCESSED ON THE GPS. This is where the Back-up came into play - I restored the GPS to its 1st settings, and suddenly the US and Canada existed again. Because of the fact I lost 2+ hours only to get back to where I started at when I opened the GPS, I'm wary of updating anything else on it. To me, that decreases its usability and integrity, hence my 1-star rating. Everything else on it seems to work fine, but that 1 LARGE drawback could've cost me the GPS and made it an expensive paperweight.

1/5/9 Update: Having used this GPS heavily for our holiday trip, usability was Great! Re-routing and time estimation was accurate and quick, and the basic functions are all easily usable with minimal touches. Two nice additions would be 1) the ability to save routes for future use, and 2) trip stats. Besides the initial "bump in the road", so far, so good!

Customer Review: Promising but so far, USELESS

Apparently, if you check for updates and actually UPDATE the ONE XL, you'll corrupt the OS due to the update being older than the shipped version. Red circle with a white X = DEAD. No reset, no downloads available to correct, no customer service on weekends, after normal business hours, no coherent on-line support.

This is a very promising device. When I initiallly opened the box and turned it on, it found my location, I saved it as "HOME" and spent an hour or so entering other "FAVORITES" - typing in addresses and saving the sites for an upcoming trip. It seemed quite easy and the touch screen is acceptibly intuitive.

TomTom Home software, as noted in comment 13, is buggy and cluncky and the backup option - which should have saved my bacon since I did back it up first while it was working, didn't fix the problem - it did back up the initial installation, but the device still will not work.

I will give TomTom another chance if they ever respond (it's Sat morning, I received the device on Fri - so no support 'till Monday, apparently).

If you don't need to do anything but take it out and begin your travels, the device works as advertised.

But I'd be VERRRRY careful about updates or downloads - especially during non-business hours.

very frustrating.

Customer Review: Warning - Key Feature Missing
Summary: 2 Stars

We plunged right in when we saw the amazing Amazon "Deal-of the day" price last Tuesday for the TomTom One XL. We should have been more cautious. Try out was last night traveling a route we could drive blindfolded from NYC to Bergen County, NJ. Immediately it became apparent that the TomTom One XL does not include "text to voice," or "announce route / road names" capability. This means that TomTom will tell you (even in an elegant English accent) "turn right in 100 yds," or "next exit left," but it DOES NOT ANNOUNCE THE ROUTE NUMBER OR ROAD NAME where the user should make the turn. When driving a city grid, street and avenue names and numbers are never announced. On a Highway, route numbers and names are never announced. You will have to take your eyes off the road and scrutinize the on-screen map for this information. Imagine entering a complex interchange at highway speeds with numerous route choices in the same location and trying to figure out which one to take based only an the verbal instruction "turn left now." This unit is essentialy nothing more than a digital map reader. It does not provide accurate, real-time, audible route guidance and therefore, the user can easily get waylaid. Other than that, a well made electronic device. Look to newer, more expensive GPS models for this essential feature.
