Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of TomTom ONE XL 4.3-Inch Bluetooth Portable GPS NavigatorCustomer Review: Don't be fooled by the other reviews - Like I Was! Summary: 1 Stars
If you want a basic simple road navigation device do not be fooled by the other reviews and do not buy a TOMTOM ONE or TOMTOM ONE XL. I chose to buy the TOMTOM ONE XL after reading the other reviews unfortunately they do not reveal two major flaws! First off - there is no way to control and lock the zoom in level while navigating. You can zoom out briefly but it will automatically zoom back in really close - it doesn't give me much advantage over what I see out my windshield. The second thing there is no way to make up to be north on the screen while navigating - it keeps rotating the map as you make turns (very irritating especially while driving in the mountains). I'm not sure how most people read maps, but I know I usually make north to be up.
I contacted TOMTOM on both these issues. First via email and was told that the touch screen had a problem (concerning the zooming in issue) and it needed to be returned for repair. I exchanged it with the retailer due to it being defective and got another one. The second ended up doing the same thing. I then contacted TOMTOM via the phone and was told the zooming in issue was normal as well as well as the orientation of the maps while navigating and the only way to have north being up and control of your zoom in level is to put it in "browse map" mode - but you loose your navigation functions if you do so.
I am very disappointed with this product and will probably give it away.
Customer Review: Tom Tom - Dumb Dumb? Summary: 2 Stars
I got this GPS after reading the good reviews on Amazon. However, so far the unit has proven to be a big disappointment. For me, the biggest problem with this GPS is that it doesn't give the best directions for getting to destinations. I've tested it on a few places that I knew how to get to, and about 50% of the time it told me to take routes that are simply out of the way (some are so obviously wrong, leaving me wonder how in the world they came up with the direction). Sometimes it would announce that I've arrived at the destination when I haven't yet reached the building. I live in a well populated area that has been developed for quite some time, so there is no excuse for the incorrect information. Because of the wrong directions I've got so far on places that I'm familiar with, I don't feel like I can trust this GPS to take me to a place that I haven't been to before. Before I leave for a new destination, I still have to get the directions from Yahoo or Mapquest to use in conjunction with the GPS, so I can make sure that this little gadget doesn't take me on a wrong or longer route.
Other things that annoy me are the voice prompt (it says to "keep left" on the freeways and streets when it simply means not to be in the right lane, and the repeating prompts sound "nagging" after a while) and the lack of the text to speech feature. The trip planning feature also isn't very user friendly. Overall, I'm not satisfied with this GPS.
Customer Review: Great Product, arrived Xmas Eve ! Summary: 5 Stars
I was told that this product would ship after Xmas; however I received on Dec. 24, 2008! This company offered and gave me FREE SHIPPING!
Product is great, and does so much more that my ancient Garmin Street Pilot.
The only problem that I have with the company I purchased from is that they would not allow me to use my PO Box to ship the product.
I have no street mailbox. All shipments arriving at my street address are by UPS / FedEx / or USPS Express or Overnight.
All regular mail / packages large and small are received at my PO Box!
So I had to use my Street Address, believing it would arrive UPS / FedEx / or USPS Express or Overnight. Did It?
Nope, since they mailed through the USPS and I had no street mailbox, it went straight to my post office. Why??
Because thankfully, I live in a teeny, tiny town where the Post Office knows everyone.
Had I lived in a larger city, even with their Free Shipping, my order would have been returned to the seller as undeliverable!
All because the way the sellers set up their website, which will not allow the use of PO Boxes for product shipment.
It's like this company is unaware that an amazing large number of COLD HARD CASH PAYING CONSUMERS utilize PO BOXES daily for not only small pieces of mail alone, but for much larger packages than those like my TOM TOM arrived in...
Customer Review: My first GPS and my last TomTom! Summary: 1 Stars
I purchased this in December 2008 because of the low price point. I don't travel much but I had wanted a GPS for a while so I would have it when I needed it. I first tried it out around town with poor results. I would be driving along the highway and the arrow would randomly jump around on the screen. As it turns out the map of my town is from the early 1990s. Yikes! Its so old that when you type in my home address, it directs you to where my local post office used to be, which has been closed for over 15 years. TomTom offers you one free map update within the first year so I took advantage of the offer and downloaded it. I didn't think much of it after that and the TomTom sat in a drawer until March 2010 when I had to go on a long trip to purchase a new car. I charged the TomTom and when I turned it on, it showed my location as Guam. What!? I tried everything to reset it, from the reset button to uninstalling and reinstalling the map but that made it even worse. The "do not disconnect" message would appear on the screen and stay there--it would never go away. I tried countless times to reinstall the map but nothing worked. Needless to say this is probably the biggest piece of tech garbage I have ever had the displeasure of owning. Every time anyone asks my opinion on what GPS to buy I tell them anything but a TomTom. I would rather have an old fashioned map from a service station!
Customer Review: Good buy, overall Summary: 5 Stars
Like some of the other reviews, I researched reviews of GPS devices for a while before I settled on the TomTom One XL. After a couple of road trips with the XL, I'm confident I made the right choice. A lot of the concerns others have stated never bothered me or were not noticed.
Some thoughts:
1. Simple interface that got me from point A to point B with no major problems--intuitive, I have not needed to refer to the manual.
2. I found the rerouting to be quick and seamless when I made wrong turns or ignored the instructions as given
3. Screen is bright and large--easy to see in daylight. Night colors were not distracting.
4. Voice options are clear and easy to hear---even over radio, highway noise, and crazy kids in the back seat!
5. Maps appear to be up to date and accurate. I read reviews blasting the maps/software used by the European GPS companies like Mio and TomTom. No problems for me so far.
6. POIs could be better organized. Garmin organizes restaurants by cuisine, for example. Obviously, a minor quibble.
7. The enclosed mount was a tad short, but the unit snapped securely in place and did not shake or fall. On my Honda CRV, there is a huge amount of space between the dash and the windscreen. I placed the suction cup above my inspection sticker. I can see the XL clearly, its in reach, but not distracting.
