Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of TomTom ONE Portable GPS Vehicle NavigatorCustomer Review: Great for the price Summary: 3 Stars
I knew what I was getting when I bought the ONE. It's a fairly basic, simple to use navigation device. It definitely will get you from point A to point B if that is all you are interested in. Whether or not it takes the best possible route to your final destination is another story. I guess if you aren't familiar with the location of your destination you won't know the difference.
I tested the unit by navigating to several very well known locations using the "fastest possible route" setting on the ONE. Unfortunately, it tends to think that fastest possible is more or less equal to shortest possible. One route that I know takes 50 minutes going via highways will take about 60 minutes using the ONE's route. This is because although getting to the highway is about 5 miles out of the way there are no traffic lights along the way. So going 45 miles on a highway is faster than going 40 miles with traffic lights. I don't think the ONE takes this into account.
My only other bone of contention is related to the above. I tried to override the ONE's selection of route by using the travel via option. This works...but if you try to add a second travel via it removes the first one. I know there is probably a way around this problem by using an itinerary but it shouldn't have to be that involved. One nice feature is that if you decide to listen to your brain instead of the TomTom while traveling, the ONE quickly recomputes the route.
Don't get me wrong. I think this TomTom is great..for the price. I'm glad I bought it. But I know that when I read these reviews I tend to like to read the ones that provide brutally honest critiques so that I can make an educated decision on my purchase.
Customer Review: TomTom One Rules! Summary: 4 Stars
Just purchased a TT1 from Amazon (10/22/07 ...$200) and have tried most of the features so far and a few "around town" trips. First of all the TT1 I got from Amazon was a "New Edition". I was concerned about what edition I was actually going to get because I couldn't find any info on the Amazon site, so I was happy with that part.
The only "problem" I had was syncing up to TomTom HOME. When you first plug in the unit via USB and HOME fires up (or not, some of the time) you're asked if you want to download the latest version of HOME. If you have a TomTom ONE don't do it. I did and it wouldn't work with HOME after that.
Download the 1.xxx HOME version (NOT 2.xxx) ONLINE! (the CD makes a fine coffee table coaster). TT tech support had me roll back my version of HOME to 1.xxx and then everything was ok. So far.
Functionally the TT1 is great for casual car GPSer's like me. I just want to get where I'm going with excellent verbal cues and it does the job with style - and there are many excellent menu function options tweakable to your hearts content.
My favorite function is the Trip Demo after you set a GoTo destination. You just sit back and watch your whole trip unfold graphically before your very eyes. (from NC to VT in my case). It is just awesome.
Lots of extras with TomTom Plus with bluetooth and your cell phone etc. None of which I use. I'm just talking about the basic get me "from here to there" functions.
I love this GPS for the price, accuracy, ease of use and great tech support.
(Would have been five stars except for the confusing product code, device code, activation code and software upgrade glitches).
Customer Review: Mixed Review....I hope this does not happen to you Summary: 1 Stars
First of all the quality of the TomTom One is excellent. Clearity and accurracy of directions is excellent and map quality is above average. I would have rated this product a 5 star item, except for the difficulties I have encountered with misleading literature and TomTom customer service. I purchased this same exact unit in September 2006 from BestBuy, so hopefully it will be different than the Amazon experience. Included within the packaging of the TomTom unit was a flyer indicating a free 2006 map update. According to the promotional flyer, all that was necessary in order to claim the update was to visit a TomTom corporate website no later than October 30, 2006. When I attempted to receive the free map update the day I purchased the GPS unit, I came to find out that the map update was not yet available. On October 15th, I attempted again, with the same results. Again I tried on the 30th, still no update. On the 30th of October I contacted TomTom and was informed the update was not even available....why they would advertise this with an expiration date prior to the products release is beyond me. I gave it another two months, and contacted TomTOm in December (two months after the promotions expiration date) and the release was still not available. I have since filed a complaint with the BBB and the only reply from TomTom is to offer me a free map update...although it is not available yet!!!!!!!!! It is now pushing February, pushing six months later and I have still yet to receive any promissed map update. Although the unit is nice, due to the lack of service from TomTom and the misrepresentation with the promotional literature, I will never own another product from this company.
Customer Review: where am I Summary: 2 Stars
My 1st experience with gps took me to the Twin Cities to look at a used Jeep. I looked at the road atlas before I left my house in central Wisconsin and got an overall sense of which roads to take when I got into the Cities. I fully intended on bringing my atlas, but I forgot it. Oh well, I borrowed my dad's Tom Tom One. I knew how to get to the Twin Cities without a map anyway, and the TomTom had the address programed into it.
TomTom got to the Twin cities flawlessly! I could have done that myself though. The problem was that the interchange for interstate/bypasses was being re-constructed in the city limits. The actual turn was opposite of what TomTom had in its maps. Things change, thats fine, it would not have been a problem had TomTom said "exit left I-490 North" instead of "exit left 500 yards" . It got me kind of lost, had I not looked at a map before leaving I would have been completely lost!! I ended up going with what I partially remembered from the atlas.
I have since tried other gps units (Magellan Crossover) and found it far superior because it tells you the proper name of the street you are turning onto. Oh and the Canada map on the Crossover is much more complete. The road to my dads cabin is on does not exist accorind to TomTom. It may be better than nothing... sometimes.
My dad has about the same opinion of the TomTom, in fact we borrowed it 4 months ago and he has not asked for it back! I purchased a Garmin gpsmaps 60csx after reading reviews here on Amazon.
I liked the Magellan Crossover too when I used it, it was a hard purchasing decision.

Customer Review: TomTom One vs Garmin Nuvii Summary: 5 Stars
I recently purchased a Garmin Nuvii 350, used it for a couple of months, hated it, sold it, and bought a TomTom One. For me, the TomTom unit is much better. It's going to be a long time before any of these units will route the user as well as a person familiar with the area, but all in all, I've very happy with the TomTom One.
The TomTom activates in 10 seconds, the Garmin takes three times as long and insists every time that you agree to their disclaimer. The TomTom unit has a better designed screen, making the vital information (what direction is the next turn and how far) easily readable even with glare on the screen. It is much easier to understand because the text to voice function is clearer and because its volume varies with road speed. You'd think that the Garmin would be better because it tells you the street name for the next turn, but half the time you can't understand it, and because the screen is so poor you can't read it either.
The TomTom allows use of a QUERTY layout for entering information which is much more natural for anyone using a keyboard every day. It has a big suction cup that sticks to the window fairly well. It allows for itinerary planning. The Garmin has none of these features.
Both units allow for navigating to a specific latitude/longitude location. Both allow traveling via an alternate route or location. Both units are pretty good, but not great at route planning.
The Garmin has an MP3 player. That would be a great thing, but in a suddenly stressful driving situation, it cannot be turned off easily. For me this makes it useless.
