Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of TomTom ONE Portable GPS Vehicle NavigatorCustomer Review: TomTom One has outdated map, compared with Garmin nuvi 360 Summary: 2 Stars
My family had a trip to Toronto couple months ago. Because of the trip, I purchased a GPS (Garmin nuvi 360). Since we went there in 2 vehicles, we borrowed a Tomtom One from our friends for the 2nd car. The nuvi 360 was the main GPS we were using on the trip, because I hv 2 coworkers who purchased Garmin branded GPS, and both of them are very much satisfied with their Garmin GPS! The tomtom One for us was just a backup GPS in case the 2nd car of us got lost on the way. So, I had the chance to compare nuvi 360 and Tomtom One. When we went from one destination to another, we inputted the address on both GPS. It seems to me that the route on both GPS getting to the same destination is different, time is different too. But I don't think it's a big deal, as there was usually only couple minutes time difference. But, in one instance, we tried to get to a hotel in Toronto, my nuvi 360 has no problem to locate the hotel. However, the Tomtom One couldn't recognize/ find the street the hotel locates, that means we weren't able to locate the hotel on the TomTom One. It turned out that we needed to look at the route shown on nuvi 360, and looked at the second-to-the-last step on the route to get the street name of the intersection. And then inputted that street name on TomTom One to find the route. I'm glad that I purchased Nuvi 360, instead of TomTom brand's GPS. I highly recommended Garmin to all my friends and coworkers, who are seeking to buy a GPS. TomTom One is much cheaper than nuvi 360. But, ask yourself, what is the reason u buy a GPS? Answer: able to locate the destination on your GPS. u want a peace of mind. If the map on your GPS is outdated, and u might not able to locate a destination on your GPS one day. Why are u spend your money for it then??!!! If u really don't want to spend more $ on a Garmin's GPS, u could choose TomTom branded GPS, however, please make sure that u update the map on your TomTom one by paying $ to purchase a latest map from them.
Customer Review: Not bad for the directionally challenged like me Summary: 3 Stars
We purchased this about 2 months ago and it works relatively well for us. I have a tendency to get lost anywhere, even when I have clear directions, so in those instances it's been great. It reroutes you very quickly and although I have been told several times to "turn around when possible" (especially on new roads) it doesn't do it often. If you ignore it long enough it will reroute again. I don't like the fact that turn by turn directions don't have street names or exit numbers, however. I have accidently turned down the wrong street or gotten off the exit too soon because I am not good at estimating yards and take the turn when it first says turn right, not when it actually wants me to. However, every time I do this it will figure out where I am and reroute me to get where I need to go, so it still meets the function I wanted it for. I like that it is portable and once you get the hang of the functions, very easy to use. I have already dropped it, though, so I plan on investigating a case or cover; something to protect it from my clumsiness. I haven't bothered with the mounting function so I can't speak to that. The points of interest function is great, but be careful. Not all of the listings are accurate; when I tried to find a CVS, it directed me to a CVS company building, not the pharmacy. The GPS didn't distinguish so we couldn't tell until we got there and it was not a pharmacy. It can also be a little tricky to actually find the place that you want in the menu, but it has helped me find restaurants and libraries relatively well. The bluetooth option does not work with my Verizon phone, but for the moment I have not missed the functions. It is, however, disappointing to not be able to use it. Overall, I like it and it works well for us at the moment. When we choose a new one in a few years, though, I would like one that says street names and I will do a little checking for overall compatibility with bluetooth functions.
Customer Review: Cool little device Summary: 5 Stars
This is a nice product. Quality build much like and apple product. Finds the directions needed quickly and reroutes fast. Touchscreen takes about 5 minutes to get the hang of and works with your fingernail tapping the screen and there is no need to get your finger tip placed directly on it.
Nice bright screen too. At first I thought the 3.5 inch screen might be too small...nope it is is just fine and the graphics are slick. Well worth the $200+ bucks. My wife made fun of me and said " yep looks like a silly gadget only you would like". She likes the thing more than I do. She has no directional compass in her brain and cold get lost in a closet.
The stupidest things I have heard about this product while reading other reviews -
It doesn't say the name of the street you need to turn on.
My comment to that would be - GOOD! It states clearly at the bottom of the screen in crisp text the name of the next turn you need to take and the distance until that turn. Plus you don't really want to hear some computerized voice butcher the name so bad it may confuse you and you wouldn't understand anyway. Good Job Tom Tom. Nice omit.
This may be a bad thing for people who cannot read but are allowed to get drivers licenses anyway.
Another thing that I found really really dumb. Someone said it takes up to 60 seconds for it to find a route across the country and that was just too damn long. (it takes about 2 seconds literally to find a local route) Seriously, if you are about to take a 4 day drive across the country and cannot wait 60 seconds to get the route then perhaps behind the wheel of a one and a half ton steel structure that travels at high velocity is just not the place for you. That's just my opinion I could be wrong.
Buy this gadget. It's simplicity is wonderful and practical.
Customer Review: Tom Tom One Rocks Summary: 4 Stars
I ordered my own Tom Tom One after using a friend's on a dive trip to Florida recently. It literally put us at the front door of any place we wanted to go. The one time it didn't was our fault because the actual street address had been changed and we still had the old one. Once we corrected the "Street Address" point, we were there.
It is easy to use, and easy to navigate through the screens as you set your destinations. It takes a bit of time sitting at home playing with it to really get comfortable with it, and in that respect I would like to see an AC adapter included in the package, along with the hot point plug for your vehicle that comes with the Tom Tom. The AC adapter is available as a separate item.
The screen colors and print are bright enough and large enough to be seen without straining, and the "night color" setting changes the screen from the bright white, yellow, and red to more subdued blues and greys. This reduces the bright glare that would be present if the day settings were used after dark, and is still very visible. The voices that notify you of upcoming turns and other directions are user selectable - everyone should be able to find one that is pleasant and agreeable.
In a year or so, I will download the updated mapping system from Tom Tom, which will provide me with the newest roads and routes. I understand that will be free. It also has the ability (for an additional subscription cost) to connect with your cell phone or blue tooth technology to give you live traffic and weather updates.
[...] I know there are lots of other GPS devices out there, but I belive this is one of the best. Map chips can be purchased for most countries in the free world, which would be an advantage for those who travel overseas.
Customer Review: Time in the field reduces from four stars to one Summary: 4 Stars
The Tom Tom One was a most welcome gift after a recent move. Its surprisingly easy to use and gets you where you're going efficiently. The moving graphic is well done and an important element of use, since it makes it clear which turn to make when multiple roads exist near an intersection. Quickly locks to GPS, sometimes even indoors. The ETA feature is nice. For a Mac user, the well-written Mac software was an added bonus.
On the downside, the mounting bracket is a disaster on both ends. The suction cup doesn't work well, frequently sending the Tom Tom onto the dashboard when I need it most. The clip that slides onto the unit itself it somewhat tight. Fully fastened, it takes quite a bit of force to remove. Combined with the weak suction cup, any attempt to slide the Tom Tom off its mount while mounted to the windsheild will almost certainly result in the suction cup popping off.
Another minor peeve: Its NOT easy to adjust the volume while driving. In spite of these deficiencies, it an an excellent product.
Having used the TomTom ONE for a while, its rating has to come crashing down to one star. The reasons:
1) Battery shelf charge life is about 12 hours. If its not plugged in right now, the battery is DEAD
2) Power/USB connector has loosened so that one must press against the connector to charge/operate the unit.
These mean one must hold the unit (oh, did I mention the suction cup is one of the few things about TomTom ONE that DOESN'T SUCK) with thumb pressing down on connector to operate the unit at all.
I've learned much since my initial excitement over this product. I will not buy another TomTom.
