Customer Review: Love it!
Summary: 5 Stars

I first bought Garmin C340 due to the high praises Amazon users give it, but I was rudely disappointed, C340 gives you no choices to customize a route(meaning you cannot create an alternative route, avoid certain streets, or go by way of certain streets) I listed to the advice of a friend and purchased Tom Tom One! I must say I love this GPS, true that its a bit weak in the software component and the customer service aspect but as a unit it's great! It routes VERY FAST! It gives very SHORT AND FAST directions (routes are similar to Google Maps; which gives excellent directions!) I love the fact that I can calculate alternative routes or avoid certain streets/bridges/avenues/etc. I took the unit on a 125mile road trip and it did not faulter for a second! It re-routed me in about 30 seconds when I missed my exit and it gives excellent directions without telling me the street names. POI database is weak but I dont use the GPS for that so that doesnt bother me, and I have heard of complaints about the unit not being able to find OLD HOUSES! This is also not a concern for me since every route in NYC that I needed, was succesfully routed to by Tom Tom. Overall this unit is a little gem! Its the cheapest and most reliable GPS I had! It has some weak spots but if you care about pure driving directions and the ability NOT TO GET LOST! You will love this unit, if you want POI, Customer Service, and PC "Emulators" you might be saddenned. But take my word for it, I love it!

Customer Review: The map is weak
Summary: 2 Stars

I purchased this unit for my girlfriend and have been testing it for the past few days. However, after using it I must say that it falls short of my expectations.
The map for the Houston area is somewhat outdated - as an example I was told to take a left on Main Street - which wasn't possible because of the metrorail running through the center of Main Street (it's been there for at least 3 years).
When inputing street numbers the unit does not take you to the exact location but rather to an approximate location. I asked to go to a number at JFK Blvd. close to Intercontinental airport and the unit took me past the number up to the terminal area at the airport instead.
Lastly, I was very close to a restaurant (1-2 miles) and asked to be given directions - the unit queried if I had a time frame to get there - I pressed no, assuming that it would take me the shortest distance, but instead it routed me via the freeway system (which is at least 8-10 miles).

I haven't had much experience with car GPS units but have used an aviation Garmin while on a trip to NYC. The Garmin would usually ask shortest distance or shortest time, maybe I didn't set the TomTom unit up, but by stating that time frame doesn't matter the assumption would be that it would take you the shortest distance.
The Garmin was much more accurate and much more user friendly. Obviously the cost difference of $4K vs. $300 may have something to do with that.

Customer Review: TomTom One works well but occasionally gets confused
Summary: 4 Stars

I bought a TomTom One GPS in preparation for a cross-country trip to Washington, DC. The device was a lifesaver in a large, strange city when we arrived at night in the rain in flawlessly guiding us to an apartment in downtown DC.

But you have to keep your common sense about you. For example, occasionally the device just seemed to lose track of where we were and would give obviously incorrect directions. These were rare occasions, however, and the error was obvious at the time.

Another thing to know about these devices is that when you ask for an alternate route it doesn't mean that the entire route will be different. On our trip to DC we wanted to take a route less congested but longer than the shortest/fastest route that TomTom automatically calculates. What I discovered, however, is that TomTom programmed our alternate route for just part of the way and then brought us back to the original routing. So we had the worst of both worlds: longer yet still most of the congestion. Pick a destination along your preferred routing to make sure you don't get sent back prematurely to TomTom's first choice of roads.

All in all, though, I love the device and find it very reliable, helpful and reassuring for first-time trips either locally or long distance. The way it keeps constant track of miles and time to your destination, both interim (when applicable) and final, is really helpful.

Customer Review: Great Unit at a Great Price
Summary: 5 Stars

I am very impressed with the TomTom One. It has been dead-on accurate, is relatively easy to use, and is a bargain at the price. The interface is solid and has several different modes, the turn instructions are timely, particularly on the highway when it gives you notice for an extra 2 or 3 miles in advance.

In terms of finding addresses, I found that you sometimes needed to enter the street name first, with the number second to find an address, but have been able to find every address that I have needed, even in rural areas of Maryland and Pennsylvania.

It does not have the text to voice capability, which might be nice, but I can see the street name on the screen while it is telling me to turn. I have not used it for finding POY, so I cannot comment on that capability.

I did some comparisons with a friends new Nuvi, which was double the price, and was not impressed with the Nuvi. Amongst other things, I wanted to see the details of a route that the Nuvi selected to make sure I agreed with the route, but was not able to figure out how to get. The TomTom has an option to show you the route in text format so that you can alter the route if you don't like. Perhaps the Nuvi could do that, but I could not figure it out. In the end, I found the TomTom to be more intuitive.

I highly recommend this product (I'm buying a second one for my other vehicle!)

Customer Review: TomTom
Summary: 4 Stars

The TomTom gets me to my destinations without the need to refer to a map. It tell you when to turn and if necessary you can glance to see the street name,I have found that rarely to be necessary. If you miss a turn it will set you on the right course, all GPS units do this. The TomTom acquires the GPS signals quickly and holds the recepiton.

The TomTom has a thin and light weight form factor at a very affordable price. The battery life outside the car is about 2 hours. A $5 dollar small aux battery pack for my cell phone, solves that if an issue.

The user interface is simple and easy to use. The display is crisp and the sound more than strong enough. The maps are robust to get you to where you want to go. If anyone thinks they can ever get a totally up to date map, they are dreaming.

The points of interest are basic, less complete than the Garman, but once you have an address, the TomTom will get you there.

I undestand why some refer to the TomTom the Apple of the GPS.

The Nuvi is about $200+ more as is the top of the line TomTom, I decided not to spend the additional money and I don't regret it. The USB cable can be used to charge your unit in the house to your computer or for less than $10 you can get a USB charger. I have one that was purchased for my I pod, works perfectly.

A great value and buy.
