Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of TomTom ONE 3rd Edition 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Vehicle Navigator

Customer Review: I (heart) Tom Tom
Summary: 4 Stars

After being led astray one too many times by Mapquest directions (not to mention how hazardous it is for me to try and drive and read directions simultaneously), I finally gave in and ordered the Tom Tom One GPS system.

I gave the Tom Tom One the ultimate baptism by fire. It arrived the night before a family vacation. I opened it (the near impenetrable clamshell packaging almost required a chainsaw and blowtorch), turned it on, and after answering a few questions on the touchscreen it was ready to go. I haven't encountered a gadget so intuitive to use since the Flip video camera. Instead of bringing a sheaf of Mapquest printouts on our road trip, I just plugged the addresses into Tom Tom, which navigated us successfully and efficiently (and with a delightful British accent) to each destination, whether rural or urban.

It's a little annoying if you intentionally go off-course to find a restaurant or gas station, but I was impressed at how quickly it recalibrates the directions to get you back to where you need to go. It's also pretty good at identifying various stores and restaurants in the immediate vicinity, though some of its information was a bit off.

You get pretty much everything you need right in the package, including a car charger, USB cable, and window mount. The pocketsize unit is small enough not to be too obtrusive while driving, and is easily detachable so you don't leave a tempting target for thieves.

The Tom Tom One proved its worth on its very first voyage (especially given Amazon's impressive discount rate), and I know I won't be traveling anywhere without it in the future.

PS - At the moment, John Cleese is the only celebrity voice available. If anyone at Tom Tom is reading this, I'd love to have Samuel L. Jackson shouting directions at me. James Earl Jones would be another awesome navigator voice.

Customer Review: Fantastic overall, with a few TINY glitches
Summary: 4 Stars

I received my tomtom yesterday and it meets 99% of the expectations I had for it. I didn't need something extremely fancy, not announcing street names is fine with me (most of the time when I get lost it's because the street sign is missing anyway!). Some of the features that come on this thing are GREAT! I love how the volume changes according to speed, I never had any problem hearing it even though I tend to listen to the radio louder than I probably should. The directions are clear and repeated rather frequently, so it's very hard to make a wrong turn.

There are only two things that I noticed which prevented me from giving it a full five stars. The first is that there are some rather major POI's missing. Things like the Bronx Zoo and Foxwoods Casino, which are both established and not new by any means. However the newer casino near me (Mohegan Sun) shows up fine. It might just be that I am not searching correctly, but I tried a few different ways and couldn't find them. Not a huge deal since I can input the address, but that's just an extra step I'd have to take. But the bigger one was that on my "maiden voyage", at one point during my trip it kept telling me to bear left. I was at a four way intersection, there was no way to bear left without turning left, so I did. Which then made the tomtom recalculate, go in a circle, and start again. I went straight and it was fine. Also, on the map screen, it showed the route going sharply off to the RIGHT and then back to the left again. So the spoken direction of bearing left, while the map showed going to the right, when it was really that I should go straight... slightly confusing.

Overall though, I am VERY pleased with this purchase! It's one of those things that you don't really realize how much you need one until you have it. Highly recommended!

Customer Review: Disregard the nit-picking. Does it perform everyday tasks?
Summary: 4 Stars

I took a hard turn and the TomTom went flying off the dashboard and under the seat. I couldn't find it without wrecking the car so I just left it--I knew where I was going.

Much to my surprise, TomTom still gave perfect directions, despite being completely under my seat.

The reception is incredible- it picks up signal even indoors. The processor is fast enough. Browsing maps is faster than Google maps on home broadband. The directions are smart and will update automatically when TomTom realizes you aren't doing what you're told.

The library of libraries, post offices, restaurants, etc. is strong. On long trips there are nice features, like an alarm whenever there's a Starbucks within 1000 yards.

I think the TomTom is the Tivo/iPod of GPS. It does what it does well, with an easy interface, and nothing else. You will not miss "text to speech". The directions are so good (a verbal warning, an update of how far until the turn, and spot-on directions at the actual turn) that I don't see why you need text to speech.

The community features might be the greatest strength. Thousands of people are updating TomTom's database for you. We found one wrong address and it was nice to share that correction.

Why not 5 stars? Because I don't think many things are 5-star worthy (a BMW 330 is the exception). This is a 4.75 star though. There's one feature missing I'd like--the ability to lock the zoom at a particular level. But, again, TomTom is smart enough to zoom in when there are turns to negotiate and then zooms out when you're doing 70mph on the interstate.

Exceptional product in the land of poorly-conceptualized gadgets. I think all but the most critical users will find this a good to exceptional product for their needs.

Customer Review: Bravo for TomTom!

I am a foreigner and can't find places without a map or Internet directions, even with these resources I tent to get lost... a lot! A friend suggested to get a Portable GPS Navigation System, and I just got the little TomTom One 3rd Edition on sale for half the price! I am amazed by the functions, the easy computer interface between computer and device that lets you update your maps and points of interest and even download new maps, make corrections and buy different voices and programs if you want to check the weather conditions from your device or find alternative ways around traffic. It is pre-loaded with emergency numbers in case you need to get help during an emergency or directions to the nearest hospital. You can choose from several female and male voices and a ton of different languages (I love the guy voice on mine :-). I even programmed my name and phone number on the unit, just in case it gets lost (And a nice person finds it and tries to return it to me! Whom am I kidding! :-). TomTom works flawlessly on my area and picks up satellite signals in seconds. The display can be customized and you can see it clearly during night or day; and the voice commands are loud and clear! I also recommend getting a case to put it away and keep it safe. If you are short like me or the car windshield is too far away from you like in some SUV's a Nav-Mat Portable GPS Dash Mount will help you to keep it closer and move your unit to a different car in seconds; a lifesaver if you live in California or Pennsylvania were it is illegal to have any devices mount on a suction cup on the windshield! If you would like to find a place safely and get there as planned, or if your husband, wife, girlfriend, boyfriend or kid is directional impair like me :-) this is the way to go! Give the gift of directions! Bravo for TomTom!

Customer Review: Mapshare, user friendly interface, price, and easy manual map correcting make this product shine!
Summary: 5 Stars

I'm a first time owner of a GPS navigation system. That being said, I'm 100% satisfied with this unit, and expected nothing more. I live in a small town in southeastern Kentucky, and the quality of the map amazes me. I don't do much out of state traveling, but on a sunny day I love to take scenic drives to the even more obscure parts of the region, and the TomTom One 3rd edition makes it 10 times better. This thing pointed out roads to me that looked more like 4-wheeler trails rather than being suitable for automobiles. The menu's are extremely user friendly, and if you do happen to find a map error (wrong road name, Point of Interest in wrong spot) you can EASILY fix this by simply touching the 'Map Corrections' option. The learning curve on this thing has to be the shortest of any other unit. I can't imagine there being any other nav. system as easy to use as this. The ONLY con I can think of would be the battery life, which stands at about 2 hours. Honestly though, if you're like me, and you're going to keep your unit mounted in your car anyway, what's the harm in just keeping it plugged into the cigarette lighter? You have to like the price tag of the TomTom One, with it being the cheapest out there. So it doesn't have an mp3 player? who needs that? Don't most of us already have our mp3 players? I want my GPS system to take me to my destination and that's all, and this product does that job very well. I am very pleased with the amount of customization that is possible with the unit, and TomTom Home (software that you install when you plug the TomTom into your PC via USB) is a piece of cake to use and update your maps with. You can even download different turn-by-turn voices if you wish. I recommend this product to anyone who is looking for a reliable navigation system, at a great price.
