Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Tivoli Audio iPAL Portable Audio Laboratory AM/FM Radio, Silver/White

Customer Review: I returned mine.
Summary: 2 Stars

I returned my Tivoli PAL for the following reasons:

1) I wasn't blown away by the sound. I recently bought a Boston Acoustics Receptor Radio and was much more impressed with the boomy presence of that small radio. The PAL sounded much thinner. I've read criticims of "too much bass" from the BA radio, so obviously it's a matter of opinion.

2) Lack of features. No HD radio. Mono (not a huge issue for me, actually). No alarm, digital readout, memory presets (obviously). No switch to aux so I'd have to plug/unplug the line everytime I wasn't to make the switch to/from my iPod.

3) I didn't plan to take advantage of its portability. I planned to leave this in my office, so one of the main advantages of this radio would be wasted.

Returning this radio was not an easy decision because it is very cute and gets very good reception. I knew it lacked many features when I bought it. The main reason I returned it was because it lacked the rich, deep, room-filling sound I had hoped for. In the end, I just didn't think it was worth the $149 I paid for it. Now it's $199??? I think they used to be $99. Isn't technology supposed to get cheaper over time?

There are a lot of 5 star reviews, so I'm in the minority here. I'd suggest listening to it before purchase if possible.

Customer Review: Victim of Manufacture written reviews??
Summary: 1 Stars

I had been looking Tivoli Ipal for my Ipod for awhile now and after reading all the reviews thought the product would be a good purchase. I had showed the Tivoli Ipal to my Brother (also an Ipod owner) and told him I was going to purchase it in a few weeks. Instead he had decided to beat me to the punch and purchase one for Himself. Well when his arrived and he plugged his Ipod in and played a song, My jaw dropped, It sounded horrible. I couldnt believe this was the same product as all those glorious reviews. For starters it doesnt get very loud at all and the sound is no where near good quality sound. And if turned above 3/4 volume, the bass becomes so satured it not even worth listening too. I decided to do a side-by-side comparision with a pair of powered computer speakers that came with my computer (they were nothing fancy at all) with the same song. The computer speakers blew it away in quality in sound and loudness. I felt my brother was victimized and feel sorta to blame for even showing him the Ipal. He returned the Ipal and the carring case that he ordered with it. But obliously something is terrible wrong either with these reviews or with the manufacture of the Ipal that he received. Needless to say I defiently wont be purchasing one myself or ever recommend it to anyone

Customer Review: Nice iPod speaker / radio
Summary: 4 Stars

The iPal from Tivoli Audio is very useful for those who want to play their iPod aloud in a place where there isn't too much outside noise and where an electrical outlet isn't available. This might include picnics, the patio, or any other place where electric isn't convenient. The tuner is typical top-notch Tivoli and the sound is very good for such a small unit provided you are in a fairly quite atmosphere. Also, the iPal is extremely portable, small enough to slip into your backpack. It might also make a great office radio / iPod speaker! If you work in a noisy factory, or other noisy environment, you will be disappointed with the iPal's lack of "oooomph". For this reason, along with the somewhat high price of this unit, I can't give it a fifth star.

If you just want some nice portable speakers for your iPod and you don't need the tuner, you might want to consider a pair of high quality computer speakers for your iPod like the Bose MediaMate for half the price and you'll get far more volume and much better sound. Pick up an inexpensive video camera bag from the store for your speaker(s)...(about $20.00) with side pouches for your iPod, and cables and you are in business! HAVE FUN!

Customer Review: Excellent personal portable radio
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought Tivoli Audio iPal several months ago. I was looking for a small personal radio that I can listen to within a range of 2-10 feet.
So far it has exceeded my expectations:
Sound quality is very good - better than I expected from its relatively small speaker. I listen mostly to talk radio, classical music, and jazz. The listening range is about what I expected: 2-15 feet.
Reception (I listen exclusively to FM) is excellent, much better than any other radio I ever had, and I had quite a few of them. The telescopic antenna is convenient and does improve reception considerably when in use.
I like very much the simplicity and convenience of the controls. Finally, we have a radio which is just that - a radio. There is no need to read the manual because it does not have a built-in cuckoo clock, a microwave oven, and a garden hose.
I was not sure initially about the unusual square foot-print of this set. Now I like it very much and consider it a must have for any portable radio. It makes this radio much more stable than other, traditionally shaped portable radios.
Overall, it is a very well-designed quality product for its intended use as a portable personal radio.

Customer Review: Great
Summary: 5 Stars

Nothing bad but the price on this great radio. But if you want a 5-star radio you have to pay the price.
The sound at all volume levels is superior to any other portable I have ever owned.
The reception with this radio is even better than my shortwave radios on AM and I live in the desert surrounded by hills and mountains.
The battery life is great at the sound level I like. The sound from that single speaker is full and warm....like a tube radio.
Nothing feels cheap about this radio and it certainly doesn't look cheap.
The only thing I don't like is that there is no AUX position for my MP3 player. When you plug the player in it disables everything else so if you were listening to the player and then want to listen to the radio you need to unplug the player. This is a minor but unacceptable inconvenience on a radio of this quality and price.
So if you want to buy a real good radio you may want to consider this one.
I also own a Tivoli Model II and that is also another 5-star radio.
Tivoli audio know how to make sound sound great.
