Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Thermaltake Mobile Fan II External USB Cooling Fan - Us

Customer Review: Any conventional fan that can knock 30 degrees off my hard drive is OK in my book.
Summary: 5 Stars

I put together an external disk and enclosure for use as a "Time Machine" back-up drive, for my Mac Pro.

As the external drive enclosure lacks a fan, the hard drive - at idle - ran at about 104F. Peak temps reached 112F+ when doing lengthy backups; and, this is with an ambient room temp of only about 76F. I imagine that it would get much worse when Chicago's hot August rolls around.

Placing this Thermaltake fan (approximately)two inches in front of the drive enclosure (the enclosure has an open grill, "cheese grader" like face, like the Mac Pro), has easily dropped the drive's temp to 92 degrees at idle; and this is with the fan set just slightly above it's lowest RPM. Out of curiosity, I left the fan at full RPM, for an hour or so, and it dropped the drive's temp to 85F.

Even though I don't have an immediate use for them, I may just pick up a few more for the future. Remember; aside from moisture, heat is an electronic device's worst enemy.

CONS (for the picky): The fan is *barely* audible, except at it's highest speeds. However, if the fan speed is set at it's lowest RPM, there is a very very slight high pitched whine that you can only hear if you're listening for it. Though, maybe that's just a defect unique to mine.

Cheers

Customer Review: Cool Running!
Summary: 5 Stars

I ordered one of these to use with my overheating external disk drive (no AC here!) for my desktop, but ended up trying it out by taking it on the road with my notebook. It is QUIET! The hard drive on my notebook is louder than this fan on low, and so far I haven't had to run it any higher to keep my normally hot-running notebook completely cool. It's kind of spooky, really, it works so well.

The fan speed knob is prominent enough that you don't need tiny hands to turn it, and turns smoothly enough that you'll find yourself casually adjusting the fan speed without even thinking about it. The stand is nice and springy, and has no trouble at all supporting the fan when it -is- turned on high. There's no blowing this fan over!

The other nice aspect of this fan is that it has a nice long cord and a wide enough range that it can be aimed to cover several devices at once -- including the notebook! Pair this one with an inexpensive USB hub to make sure you've got plenty of ports on hand, and you've got yourself an all-weather kit for your notebook that can take any heat.

I can't wait to get this home to use on my desktop and external hard drives!

Customer Review: USB Fan
Summary: 4 Stars

This thing works great. It's an internal PC Case fan, made to work free standing and powered by USB. Pretty quite on the lower settings (nob adjusted), and powerful on the high setting.

Only one problem. There is no on/off. If the usb has power running to it, the fan is on. Newer computers have a trickle power to the USB even when the computer is off. That means when I don't need or want the fan on, it is. It's a constant draw on power.

However, the reason I got this fan is to help exhaust hot air from my computer cabinet. Not a lot of ventalation and the computer dumps a lot of hot air. I put the Fan on top of the case, pointing out the front of the cabinet. Works like a charm. Needs an on off switch though.

It seems to be the only real game in town for my application, I've searched and even tried one of those fan on the end of the adjustable metal arms. It is very loud and if exposed to hot air, it will lose it's shape and sag/drop down.

This is the way to go, I might even get another to plug into my Xbox to blow cool air over it.

Hope the review helps.

Customer Review: Good fan for tight spaces.
Summary: 4 Stars

I ended up moving my Dell XPS tower into the enclosed area of my new desk because that's what the space was designed for. However, with as big as my tower was, I knew air circulation would be an issue. The side slot that the desk has provided was not enough and heat was building up inside the enclosure that I had to keep the door of it open, which defeated the purpose.

I purchased 4 of these fans with the intent of mounting two on the the back panel of the enclosure to draw the hot air out. So far, I've only mounted one to test it out and it works great. I have to keep it on high in order to maintain adequate airflow and while the noise it makes at 75-100% is a mild hum, I'm going to add a second fan to the panel so I can just run both of them at about 50%, which makes no audible noise.

I've also go one that sits on top of my desk to use when I have all of my video editing equipment going to help circulate the air.

These little fans are perfect to get air moving in small places. They're in expensive and have a convenient retractable cord. So far, I love these lil things! :)

Customer Review: Great job cooling PS3.
Summary: 5 Stars

I had been looking for a cooling system for my PS3 just to keep it quieter. I've read all the reviews of other attachable fans and even liquid systems. All the other fans have one main problem, they're so loud, which defeats the purpose for me and liquid is quite expensive and not too plausible. I find that the internal fans do a fine job of keeping the PS3 cool enough to work, but they can get loud in the 3 or 4 speed. I read that this fan was quiet and functional so I decided to try it.

For one it works great, better than I expected. It's definitely quiet and even on full it's not that bad. I just angle this fan towards my PS3 and it stays on the 2nd fan level even after 4-5 hours of playing. Stays quiet enough to watch movies without being distracting. Even gets back to level 1 if I turn the fan up which means this fan does a great job of cooling. Using the usb connection it's only on when my ps3 is on so I never have to touch it, very convenient. The the usb cord is so thin and the retractable cord keeps it out of the way.

Definitely recommend it. Great quality and features.
