Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Texas Instruments TI-89 Titanium Graphing Calculator

Customer Review: Quality Calculator
Summary: 5 Stars

I've used the regular TI-89 in the past, but I never owned one. I always used loaners from my high school. But now I'll be at college, so I need my own calculator. I just bought a TI-89 Titanium and I am very impressed. It has all the things that were good about the TI-89, plus a USB port, more memory, and a sleek new design. It is a beautiful piece of engineering.

If you've never used a graphing calculator and are thinking of just using a computer to do your work, you'll find that a calculator is much easier to work with. The TI-89 Titanium has a very intuitive design that only requires a couple clicks to factor, integrate, solve equations, graph, or access any of the built-in programs, like the calendar or the address book. It is small enough to fit in your pocket and carry around with you wherever you go.

The thing is also built rock-solid. I've dropped TI-89's in the past with no ill effects and the Titanium feels just as solid. The cover seems a little tighter than the TI-89's cover, but as I use it, I am sure it will slide a little easier.

The TI-89 Titanium is only $20 more than the old TI-89 and I've heard that the new HP calculators are not that great (just read the reviews of the 49G+). Plus, I've never even seen someone using an HP calculator and it's nice to be able to share programs with other people using a TI-89. If you're in the market for a graphing calculator, the TI-89 Titanium is definately the one to buy.

Customer Review: Good enough for me (too good for my math instructor)
Summary: 4 Stars

My first calculator in many years. It does a lot, so the learning curve is long, and for me, steep. After about a month, I'm feeling more confident, although there are more than enough options that remain a complete mystery to me (some of this is because the math itself remains a complete mystery to me).

I think it's a little too 'plastic' for the price, and will probably take what I would consider a small bounce and die on me sometime in the future. Hopefully after my two math classes are finished.

In my (college) Trigonometry and Analytic Geometry class the instructor won't let me use it on tests because it is 'too powerful.' Right. But I figure anyone who had actually figured out how to cheat using this calculator probably wouldn't be in this class. In the Calculus I class the instructor has no problem with my calculator. Go figure.

I'm also amazed at how slow it is when it draws a graph. Are the graph drawing brownies inside this thing unionized or something? But we're still only talking about seconds, not minutes, so perhaps it's just that I'm used to instant gratification.

All in all, I'm sorry I had to blow so much money on a calculator, but happy I got this one, even though the instructor thinks it's 'too much power' for me to be trusted with. Hopefully I can work my way up to using it at its highest potential before I spill coffee on it and thus send it to an early grave.

Customer Review: Powerful Calculator; Highly Recommend
Summary: 5 Stars

Great Aspects:

With tons of RAM and powerful functions/calculations, this calculator can't be beat; think of it as a really souped-up TI-83 Plus. It is also very easy to edit/re-use past calculations. The ability to hook up to a PC via the provided USB cable and software can prove to be very useful as well as the ability hook up with other TI-89's (again, the cable is provided). Anybody taking calculus or a subsequent course should strongly consider this calculator (especially if you're in the later courses).

While not really relating to school or math, this calculator is capable of running some really cool games.

Downside:

It takes time to learn how to use all of its programs and functions. Sometimes, you have to go through some pretty complicated processes to do some fairly basic functions. Don't throw away your manual. Buttons are on the small side and it is sometimes hard to read buttons (especially the alternate, "2nd," button functions). If you're not taking calculus or a higher-level course, you don't need this calculator, particularly since it's not cheap.

Summary:

The TI-89 Titantium is an exceptionally useful tool for those entering math/science fields, starting with calculus. For those who just take math courses because they have to (for graduation requirements), this calculator isn't worth the investment.
Highly Recommend.

Customer Review: Great Calculus Calculator
Summary: 5 Stars

This calculator is a must for any Calculus AB class or above. It is the first in the TI series that handles integrals, differentials, 3D graphing, differential equations, user-defined variables, upper and lowercase lettering, and custom flash apps... to name a few. It has a visually-pleasing home screen, to allow you to see equations as they would naturally be written, instead of in a single line filled with parenthesis. Built-in flash applications allow you to do things like create study cards, edit lists and matrices, edit text, and solve simultaneous equations. The one con about this calculator is that it is much less adept at performing statistical operations, such as linear regression, than the previous TI calculators. The TI-89 Titanium, however, was designed for calculus, so this is not a huge problem.

The buttons are very quiet and responsive. Over time, depending on what they are expose to, then can become occasionally stuck, but anyone who treats this calculator well won't have any trouble with the input. Using this calculator for about 4 hours a week, a fresh set of four Duracell batteries lasted 6 months in the device. This will vary depending on your contrast settings. The case is quite durable, but that's not to say that the components are, so be careful with this.

This is a top-choice calculator for any level Calculus class, and I would recommend it to anyone.

Customer Review: Too Advanced cause complication for simple Math
Summary: 3 Stars

I bought this TI-89 Titanium especially this semester for Statistics and Trig Classes I was pretty disappointed. Athough the calculator claims to be the best it can do anything below and above calculus..it May be, but IT IS NOT USER friendly. Small fonts, etc. Admit I'm struggle of how to use it, but with the too much extra stuff it can't really simpify simple math usage. So, I went and buy another TI, the 83 plus which gears more towards Statistics with tons of references everywhere to do Statistics. Even though, the TI-89T claims to do all Statistics and beyond it is Not Recommended. Not even Professors, College Math Lab, or on the web with experienced or references in know well of how to use it. From what I understand by a professor is, buy this calculator, only if you are in Calculus II and after. All the functions from the older TI-83/4 are not in the same position buttons, it's totally revamped. Since Trig do functions, transformation graphs, trig identity, the TI-89T is not allowed. In order to use this calculator you must know your math well and willing to learn a new set of operations, familar with TI software. Overall a calculator this powerful and price, it should be easy for beginner to advanced users at any level, but it is not, so I rated a 3-star. In addition to the lack of user friendly, manual are useless, and no references anywhere of how to use it for specific applications.
