Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Texas Instruments TI-89 Advanced Graphing Calculator

Customer Review: TI - IT excellence
Summary: 4 Stars

I was looking for the HP 49G. Downloaded the emulator. Tested it functions. Verdict: Quite an impressive calculator.

But I had one really high standard for the calculator, There must be a good C-compiler for it. That's were this calculator didn't passed the test. Too many lingo-conversions were needed (C-to-RPL-to-ASM were the best compilers). Too much searching for a good compiler (Trying to get the programs working for ours and ours...) Looked for the HP-Basic compiler, but it was not available for free.

Finally, I tried the VirtualTI program with the TICC C-compiler (both available at ticalc.com). I wrote a complete complex program, in 30 minutes, and it worked. I was getting familiar with the calculator in a short amount of time and was pleased with the ease-of-use.

There are some step-by-step programs you can download at TI.com to compensate this excellent feature that the HP has, but they will take some memory.

Still gonna buy the 49G someday (if their isn't gonna be a better calc.), but for now the TI is excellent.

Customer Review: Better than most HP's
Summary: 4 Stars

Better than most HP's, and, no, it is not true that you should be disciplined in HP if you are to take any career in any field of engineering. HP is complex, and their calculators contain boot up processes, sure, but what or where does it get you when you all you need or want is to turn the thing on, hit two, maybe four buttons, and access information you need? The one thing I have noticed with all the higher HP calc's I own, is that, it takes a good number of hours sorting through and hot keying everything in order to tailor it too your needs, and that is an event all in its own, truthfully. The TI-89 practically expects this to happen and is practically set up off the bat to easily accessable, or even for the user to tailor to their liking. Granted, your four hundred dollar HP will leave this in the dust, since it, in all practicallity, is its own little personal computer, but for the '89 is a hit from TI, because of what it can do, it's power, and the considerably lower price you only have to pay to obtain one.

Customer Review: THE WAY TO ACE ALGEBRA
Summary: 5 Stars

I CAN NOT BOAST ENOUGH ABOUT THIS CALCULATOR!!!! If you want to get an A in algebra buy this calculator. Do not buy the ti-83 or ti-86. Why? Because for chump change (an extra $40 at the most) you have a calculator that can do almost every algebra problem possible. If you are in college your professor will allow you to use this calculator duing tests and you will get an A on every test. I try to do every problem myself and then I check. If I don't know how to do a problem it feels like cheating, because just punch it into your calculator and you'll get the right answer. The only downside to this calculator is you have to figure out how to use it. The manual that TI provides is written in English, but it might as well be written in a foreign language. Unless your a genius,it will be of no assistance in helping you to use the calculator. You can buy and study books that you can find on Amazon-Step by step tutorials. It takes time to learn to use it but it is worth every minute you invest!

Customer Review: A great calculator—available at a great price…
Summary: 4 Stars

I have used several graphing calculators in the past several years, including the TI-82, TI-83, TI-83 Plus, and an older HP calculator.

This calulator has great features—it's extremely easy to use with pull-down menus and many shortcut keys, and it has power to do much more complex problems than any calculator I've tried, with the possible exception of the HP. It is exactly the same as the TI-92 Plus—it even has the same manual. There are two small differences—the 92-Plus has a qwerty keyboard and the ability to do geometry. Unless these are extremely important to you get the 89.

On the downside, I was disappointed to find that it does not have sound…or if it does, I haven't heard it yet. It is advisable to be careful of third-party games—the more complex the calculator, the easier it is for something to go wrong, and I have had to reset my memory once. If you have important info on your calculator, BACK IT UP before installing a new game.

Customer Review: if God had a calculator...
Summary: 5 Stars

This is easilly the most amazing peice of electronics i've ever owned. If you're proficient with most electronics, it's an easy to learn interface, and the list of its functions just goes on and on and on. it can solve the most annoying, long, pain-in-the-butt eqautions and give you a final answer in seconds. Also a must-have for anyone taking the SAT's. However, if you're one of those people who has trouble figuring out the microwave, this calculator is NOT for you. The only misgiving I have about it is that sometimes really simple things are hard to do without thumbing through the manual for 10 minutes (I couldn't figure out how to plot points on a graph, for example).
This calculator has been the only reason I ace every single math quiz and test i've had this year!
You might have to watch out if you're in high school and your teacher checks your work though, because my teacher was less than pleased when she found out that I was using such an advanced tool.
