Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Texas Instruments TI-89 Advanced Graphing CalculatorCustomer Review: Easier than most make it sound!! Summary: 5 Stars
I'm going to get right to the point: this is a great calculator. I've read hundreds of reviews prior to my purchase of this item, and nearly all of them have something to say on its difficulty of use. What I think gets most users is its new interface: scrolling menus (like those of a Windows operating system) and pop-up windows. Its not that this calculator is difficult to use, but it reqires more keypresses per operation than the TI-83, -85 (which I owned previously) or the -86. In my opinion, a few extra keypresses here or there is well worth the conveniance that this calculator brings to the class room: It does everything. This little guy will save you *so* much time in any facet of math or science in which you use it. Buy one if you're a serious student (late high school through highly advanced university work)or professional. You won't regret it.
Customer Review: Great for kids but... Summary: 2 Stars
This calculator will do well for students who are doing homework for their lower level classes but for the professional, the HP 49GX or HP49G is superior, both in terms of capability and product quality. As a chemical production engineer, I had a TI-89 until a fall from my desk left it dead. Since I had used an HP 41CV in school, I decided to replace it with an HP 48GX. Since that time I have noticed that ALL of my professional colleagues use HP calculators. Since that time, my HP has survived bumps, falls, and even complete submersion in water and still works as well as the day I purchased it.If you are a high school student and looking for a calculator for math class, buy the TI. On the other hand, if you are an engineer, or a student who wants to learn engineering on the calculator you will use once you are a professional, get the Hewlett Packard.
Customer Review: A Calculus Student Must-have Summary: 5 Stars
This Calculator absolutely does it all! It's ability to find derivatives and antiderivatives (which the TI-85 cannot do) as well as many other calculus functions is invaluable. In calculus, I was always far ahead of my class due to this calculator! In statistics, its tables and graphing is extremely easy to use and its statistical summaries are much easier to access and read than those of the 83 or 85. The pretty print feature makes finding mistakes and reading the answers much easier. The graphs (3D) are far superior to that of the TI-83 or 85. I would recommend this calculator over the 92 for high school students due to the fact that the TI-92 (with its QWERTY keyboard) is not allowed on the SAT I or II tests or AP tests. The TI-89, with very similar operation and features, is allowed on these tests. For more information...e-mail me.
Customer Review: "Panacea" for all calculator troubles.Great problem-solver ! Summary: 5 Stars
The TI-89 is a great investment for anyone who needs to go beyond the functionalities available in a usual scientific calculator. The calculator is designed to provide advanced functions like equation solving, integration(definite and indefinite), differentiation, factorization of integers and polynomials, 2-d & 3-d graph plotting and so much more. The manual that comes with the TI-89 is well organized into chapters and ends with an alphabetic list of functions available, making it very easy for the user to adapt to a heavy duty calculator like this. This is truly a wonder-gizmo. Just 2 things : (1) I wish there was a chargeable version of this calculator so I could charge it up overnight, like my cellphone ( it needs 4 AA batteries at a time).(2) I also wish the font style and size was bigger and better, because the font available is too tiny.
Customer Review: great calculator.. but.. Summary: 5 Stars
no LOG button! which means no antilog, which you need in algebra 2 and chemistry! (unless of course im being extremely stupid and dont know how to do antilog). anyway. its annoying to scroll through the catalog or type log each time. also not a good calculator for stats (if you are using the workshop stats book), unless you are lucky enough to find all of the programs you need. i love this calculator. its quite easy to use.. not confusing at all. you just have to get sed to it. the 'window" is great, makes everything a lot simpler. the text display is much better than the ti-83. super! Also, most teachers do not know how to use a Ti-89, so if you have issues with it, its basically your problem and you need to figure it out. Overall, GREAT calculator because its easy to use and has most of the functions i regularly use..
