Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Texas Instruments TI-89 Advanced Graphing CalculatorCustomer Review: The Greatest Calculator for University Level Math! Summary: 5 Stars
If you are at University and are not terrribly mathematically inclined (all my fellow English and Humantites majors please take note), then the TI 89 is for you. It is very easy to use, if you know how to use Windows, you can figure out the TI 89...it is just that simple. The TI 89 has a symbolic math guide that will guide you to the way you need to set up an equation, it is a very powerful app and if it is late at night and if you are struggling to do your homework this app is a great supplemental learning tool. And to tell you the truth, if you are up a creek when you are taking a test, this calculator is just great! The pretty print feature is great because when you are truly up a creek you can write down your answer as it should appear and it does not look too fishy.
But be careful, this calculator can do all your mathematics for you and from personal experience I know this to be true if you are just taking the math that you need to graduate and are a non math or science major. Especially if you are to start from the ground floor up; and have to take developmental studies level algebra courses, this calculator does all the work that most high schoolers and whatnot need to learn in Elementary Algebra and Intermediate Algebra and that work is what you must master in order to take University level math, so use with caution or you are not to learn all to much.
If you are taking any of those math for non math majors type of courses, then you better use your calculator as a supplemental learning tool or you will not learn too much! I almost forgot how to do linear equations because of this calculator so please be careful in how you use it like on tests and whatnot; we are all students here, eh? So you and you alone use your best judgement with this calculator and tests, I ain't here to preach.
The guidebook that comes with this calculator is fair to middling. I just go on the Texas Instruments Calculator web site and ask a question or two on the discussion boards, that is a lot easier than downloading some big guidebook from off the web. There are also modified guidebooks online that are a lot lighter than that big guidebook that Texas Instruments puts out and makes you download, you can print a modified guidebook and carry it with you in your school binder or something.
I think this calculator is great for factoring and foil; the quadratic equation; inequalities; equations with more than one variable; most any form of graphing that pertains to math for non math majors; and it really helps you if you are up a creek with some big equation; just use the solve option or the c solve option. There is even an option for factoring that is great when you are in a pinch. The solve option will do most any standard linear equation for you, so be careful with it or you will forget how to do most any standard linear equation.
You can find a variety of programs to download that are online. For that, you need a graph link and win zip so you can unzip the file. If you cannot download the graphlink software to your computer, you can get it for free from the Texas Instruments web site; but you still need a graph link cable and Amazon is the best priced place to get this calculator and the graph link cable.
So, if you want a good supplemental learning tool for math and have the discipline to use it just when you are up a creek on tests and when you are doing homework, then buy this sucker today; it will save you a lot of fumbling around with paper and pencils and erasers and having to try over and over to figure an equation out...I say when you are on your thirs attept in solving an equation when you are doing homework, then you bust this calculator out and have it help you. And, if you are permitted at your high school or university to use this calculator then you use it on a test honestly but if you cannot get an answer that jives with answer a,b,or c...then you bust this calculator out so you do not get a problem wrong.
Now, I am as near sighted as all get out so I do not like the tiny pixles and everything on this calculator BUT you can adjust the contrast to fit your vision like it is no big deal and as long as you use your calculator in a well lit area (as oppossed to a cave) then you should be swell.
The biggest drawback to this calculator is that you have to treat it like it is fine china because there is no protection between the screen and your thumb prints and stuff. This is a very delicately made calculator and I shudder to think what would happen if you dropped it on a hard floor. The screen can scratch easily so use it with caution and try to find something nice to carry it in, I use a fabric pencil pouch to carry mine in that I lined with cotton because this thing costs a lot but is manufactured like it is a piece of crap. I guess it is a trade off between form v/s function and at the end of the day I am glad this calulator functions like the well tuned machine it is and as long as you treat it gently, it should last a long time (if you are a student, just go ahead and change the triple A batteries at the end of the semester and get the lithium battery changed once a year).
Description of Texas Instruments TI-89 Advanced Graphing CalculatorIntroducing TI's most powerful graphing calculator: The TI-89 Titanium, offering new features, preloaded Apps, and even more versatility. A built-in USB port makes data transfer ultra-convenient. Plus, with three times the memory of the TI-89, you can store more Apps, data, and programs This advanced graphing calculator is packed with more features than you might know how to use. The TI-89 lets you perform the expected functions of an advanced calculator--basic math, algebra, calculus, graphs, matrices, and statistical functions. However, you can also do cool stuff like create animations as well as graph 3-D rotations and plot contours. The manual that ships with the TI-89 is a killer, presenting over 500 pages of clear, concise definitions, function explanations, examples, drawings, and appendices. It's divided into well-organized chapters that cover all the major features of the calculator. Graphing functions include basic function graphing, parametric graphing, polar graphing, sequence graphing, 3-D graphing, and differential-equation graphing. Additionally, the TI-89 includes symbolic manipulation, constants and measurement units, statistics and data plots, a numeric solver, a text editor, programming capabilities, tables, a split-screen function, variable management, and the ability to link to other calculators or a computer. The large, color-coded keys are easy to read and find--a nice touch on such a feature-heavy calculator. An improvement over earlier Texas Instruments graphing calculators is the addition of one-touch X, Y, and Z variable keys. The large LCD screen is also adjustable to your environment; we were able to view it clearly in a variety of lighting. The TI-89 comes with an attached, hard slide cover that protects it from getting knocked around in a backpack. The TI-89's flash technology allows you to upgrade to future software versions so you don't have to continually invest in new calculators. The whopping 500 K of memory is more than sufficient for your stored functions, programs, and data. You can also create custom menus or use the default menu. Another cool feature is the Program Editor, which gives you the ability to program. The TI-89 also comes with an input/output port and cable, letting you synch up with other TI-89s or TI-92s. --Jill Lightner Pros: - Large keys
- Easy-to-read LCD
- Includes input/output port and cable
- Allowed in AP, SAT, PSAT/NMSQT tests
- Comprehensive, illustrated manual
Cons: Essential for AP Calculus, college math, and beyond, the TI-89 is the most logical handheld technology for advanced mathematics studies. Enhanced with Flash technology, this handheld gives you the flexibility to add calculator software applications and additional functionality, providing long-term value. Built-in advanced mathematics software includes a Computer Algebra System (CAS) enabling you to manipulate mathematical expressions and functions (factor, solve, differentiate, integrate, and more). It also includes differential equations, 2-D graphing and data analysis, 3-D graphing with rotations, linear algebra, interactive numeric solver, constants, unit conversions, statistical regressions, and optional assembly language programming.
