Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Terk Technology HDTVi VHF/UHF HDTV Indoor Antenna

Customer Review: Highly recommended
Summary: 5 Stars

The Terk model is based on the highly regarded Silver Sensor design and works very well. I expected the directional design to pull in many of the local stations which are clustered together in my locale but was surprised at how well it pulled in signals from far away in the opposite direction.

This was going to be a test for me to determine if I could get sufficient quality to justify replacing cable. Well the signal for all of the local channels is at least as good and in many cases even better than cable. I have mine installed in the attic and used the no longer needed, existing cable runs to connect it up to the rest of the house. Works like a charm.

I've read complaints about the base and the overall design being a bit top heavy and easily knocked over. So far I haven't had any problems, but see how this could be a problem. If it becomes an issue I'll put it in shoe box to keep it upright.

I chose to go with the non-amp version as this was initially a cheap test, but I also had an existing amp (something I needed to get decent quality digital cable anyway). Cable has since been disconnected. Between high quality local channels and internet tv, we have 90+% of our favorit local / cable channels and save over $1000/yr. C

Customer Review: Terk HDTVi Antenna
Summary: 5 Stars

I got a coverter box for an old TV and had two rabbit ear type antennas with an A/B switch on it to get reasonable reception. One was adjusted to bring in some of the channels the other was adjusted bring in most of ther other channels. I had to also do some adjusting of the the positions at times. I saw a Terk HDTVi at a garage sale and decided to try it. I had looked at this and other antennas before, but had heard differing opinions about them. One said they worked no better than a simple rabbit ears. I connected the HDTVi to my TV and found a position that brought in all of the channels most of the time. Channel 2, which was always a problem came in great. I had another old TV upstairs in my bedroom. It also had a converter box and a rabbit ears antenna. Having a higher elevation, the reception was a bit better, but still needed a lot of adjustment. I bought a new LED TV for my bedroom and tried the Terk HDTVi on it. It again greatly improved the reception. I bought another Terk HDTVi to replace the one I had in my family room and had moved upstairs.

I am pleased with these antennas and would recommend them.Terk Technology HDTVi VHF/UHF HDTV Indoor Antenna

Customer Review: This antenna is completely useless.
Summary: 1 Stars

I have alot of experience trying both indoor and outdoor antenna for UHF signals (HDTV antennas). So I believe I have a good idea where this ranks compared to others. Quite frankly, almost all indoor antenna's are really bad at recieving UHF signals, and this Terk antenna is no exception. When i tried this antenna i got less channels, and low signal strength than a pair of rabbit ears i found lying around the house. So unless you live within 2 miles of your DTV station, don't count on it for you over-the-air needs. Www.antennaweb.org is site design to help you choose an antenna based on how far you are away from your TV Station. Honestly for most people there are only two good indoor options. The DB2 (by www.antennadirect.com)and the Zenith ZHDTV1 Indoor Antenna at amazon.com are both really good. I live in the St. Louis metropolitan area with all 7 DTV stations between 10 and 25 miles away. With the Terk HDTVi antenna I could get 3 channels at anyone time with moderate to weak signals. (I could get 4 channels with my rabbit ears). Using the Zenith antenna i currently receive all 7 DTV channels with atleast 80% signal strengh. If you're looking for a UHF (DTV?HDTV antenna) stay away from this antenna.

Customer Review: As good as a piece of wire
Summary: 4 Stars

I am lucky enough to live in a residential area about a mile away from an antenna farm that most of the local digital stations broadcast from. I was using the HDTVi as my first HDTV antenna along with a HDTV STB which has one of the best tuners currently available (LG LST-3100a) and it worked great!

One day I was messing with the HDTVi and I detached the metal tree-element thing from its base while the TV was on. Expecting "NO SIGNAL" to appear on the screen, imagine my surprise when my signal strength actually INCREASED!

Then I performed a little test - I replaced the HDTVi with a 3 foot long piece of bare wire. That worked very well - the signal strength was almost as high on every station (all were still above 70% and watchable).

I am not going to even pretend to be able to explain any of this. The current jive going 'round is that the HDTVi is a ripoff of the superior Silver Sensor design (google that), and that Terk is the Bose of the antenna world (i.e. crap). I don't disbelieve this. I hypothesize that, given my location right near the towers, bathed in signal strength, I am actually HELPED by a weaker, crappier antenna, which the HDTVi apparently is.

Customer Review: Receives 21 Digital With a Handful of HD Channels
Summary: 4 Stars

We live in the city of Herndon/Reston area of Virginia. There are 21 digital (a few HDTV) and around 10 analog signals that were found during the scan. Interestingly, the first time scan was performed, the antenna only found 1 digital and a few analogs which was done in the daytime. A big difference in the number of channels between the time of scanning. Right after stations were established during the night scan, most of them remained even during the daytime watching. I am satisfied with the result. I suggest to do the initial scanning during nightime when interference may be at a lower level as compared to the daytime office hours.
I am not surprised with some households to experience very poor performance with the antenna. It depends a lot in the location of your home and the placing of the antenna. It is a good idea to purchase the product from a company that has a good return policy or easily accessible if it does not work for you.

Some minor complaints: The size and shape of the antenna. For an indoor antenna, it is big and awkward looking. The base can be made bigger for better stability. The signal amplifier need an LED to know if it is on or not.
