Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Targus Groove Backpack Case Designed for 16" Inch Laptops CVR600 (Black)

Customer Review: ABFAB!!! I couldn't love it more!
Summary: 5 Stars

I was using a very expensive, multi-hundred dollar, soft as a glove, leather bag for my laptop. I like this backpack much MUCH better. Why? Well, I'll tell you. Not only is my 15.4" laptop well protected, but this case is easier to carry and has all these little pockets that hold my iPod, pocket PC, folders, extra CD and DVD media, wallet, keys, pens, thumb-drives, lipstick, brush, you name it. It's replaced my purse and briefcase. Couldn't I get all those things in the other bag? Yes, and no. The brush had to be in with the folders in the other bag which caused the occastional embarrassing moment when I have had to pick hairs off folders. Not very professional. In this bag the laptop is in one place, the folders are in another place, and the personal items are in their own pocket.

Now, I will admit, that it's not as impressive to look at as my leather case; and even though it's basic black it doesn't match any of my shoes or outfits, but it's SO functional, I just make a joke to clients about going through my second childhood, and I go about my business. It's a great conversation starter.

If I had to haul textbooks too, I might want something larger, but if you're a busy professional, this case does it all, and you don't have to worry about where you set it as you do with the fine leather goods. Bottom line? I like it and would recommend it to anyone who needs a computer bag that can adapt to any situation. I liked it so much I even bought the wheeled version which has a great removeable neoprene sleeve for my laptop. Okay, lecture over.

Customer Review: Nice computer backpack but not good for air travel
Summary: 3 Stars

If I didn't fly frequently, I would have rated this backpack higher since it's inexpensive, sturdy, light, roomy, well-made, and fairly well organized.
However, it is not the best choice for frequent flyers since the laptop compartment is along the back of the main compartment, which means it is very difficult to get your laptop out for the security screen if you have anything in the main compartment. (And the design and the angle of the top of the main compartment actually make it even more difficult than it should be!)
Since my lapop is small (14"), it still fits in the laptop compartment even when in a sleeve, so I've been able to work around this issue by putting files in the laptop compartment and keeping the laptop in the sleeve in the front of the main compartment until I go through the security screen. However this is not optimal and I am looking for a new bag for traveling since the entire idea of having a computer bag is to keep the computer in the compartment that is designed to protect it! (And it's also rather annoying to have to "repack" the bag after going through security.)

My oher main issue with the bag (and I have this issue with other Targus computer backpacks as well as most computer backpack by other manufacturers) is the fact that "Targus" embroidered on the front of the backpack in large letters in a contrasting color. Since part of the reason for using a computer backpack is that a backpack (in theory) isn't as obviously a computer bag as a roller, the prominent branding negates the "camouflage" since everyone knows Targus doesn't make regular backpacks.

Everything from my old backpack fits in this pack. And I mean everything! The notebook pocket has my new Dell XPS 1330 in the sleeve it came in.
The large pocket next to the laptop fits a case with travel cables and PDA synch cord, my wallet with checkbook, a bag with meds, 2 eye drops, hand lotion, sanitizer, nail files, toothpick, deodorant, and eyeglass cleaner, another bag with my PDA combo AC/DC charger, emergency battery charger, earbuds, bluetooth headset, and extra stylus. It also holds 3 extra AAA and 2 AA batteries and kleenex.
The middle pocket holds my eRunner planner and PDA, pocket survival kit and wipes.
The front pocket has a headlamp, keys with flashlight and tools, 3 pens, and work name badge and a paperback book.
The front mesh holds a coin purse with hair bands, clips, mints, and lip gloss.
One side pocket has a case with hair pick, portable fan, metal measuring tape, photo holder, binder clips, coins, and paper clips. The other has a bag of food with nuts, granola bars, candy and tea.
And I still have room left over for a travel surge protector, water bottle, umbrella, and a raincoat that folds into it's own pocket or ????

The straps have much better padding than my old backpack. And after I loaded everything in, to my surprise, it has a lap belt that takes all the weight off my shoulders. It is a joy to carry.

I love this backpack so much I'm buying another as the price has been reduced another $6. And then I'll have a spare. I love spares!

Customer Review: Elegantly designed and rugged
Summary: 5 Stars

I usually don't write reviews but feel compelled to provide one on this bag. I've been using this bag for the last 6 months and have nothing but great things to say. The things I look for in a bag are reliable zippers, durable stitching and quality fabric. As with most things in life, there are trade-offs, however, this bag manages to do well in all these areas while remaining relatively inexpensive. Without being too austere, it's still got some trendiness in it's design that suggests that Targus was hoping to appeal to the hip college kid and the mobile businessman who isn't bashful about using a backback instead of a briefcase.

The fabric is remarkable and *almost* behaves like quality ballistic nylon. I've managed to spill coffee on it, scrubbed it, generally NOT babied it, and there hasn't been any noticeable fuzziness or pilling.

The padding of laptop compartment is adequate for me and suspect it would be for the potential buyer who carries their laptop a little more carefully than an airport baggage handler. I've no issues with carrying my 12", 14.1", 15.4", or 16" laptops. The 16" is wider resulting in a longer profile in the bag making it a bit tight, but still workable.

The bag also has lots of compartments that allow for organization for those who like to obsess and also enough room (ignoring the dividers, pockets) to satisfy the person who like to just "dump it in the bag" types.

Kudos Tarus! You nailed it on this one.

Customer Review: Excellent quality for the price
Summary: 5 Stars

I couldn't find another notebook backpack for anywhere near this price, so I got this one for a 15.4" Compaq unit. I was actually worried about the quality from the picture, but it actually looks better "in person" and the quality is quite good. In particular, they did something I just love with the way the padded straps meet the pack itself: instead of just sewing the straps into the pack, the straps flare out and connect in a sheet of material that connects to the pack, spreading the strain out over about 10 inches of seam. Usually packs die on me by the straps coming out, and I end up sewing them back in with dental floss. But that seems unlikely with this design -- I will definitely be looking for that feature on any future backpacks!

The padding for the laptop is not very thick -- perhaps 3/8"? -- but it definitely helps, and the chamber keeps it from flopping around. There are lots of little pockets, and the material is good. The padding on the straps is better than I have seen on many low-end packs.

One thing that isn't perfect for me is that I generally carry one of those taller water bottles when I travel, and the exterior pockets don't hold it well -- I end up putting the water bottle inside, which is a bit scary with the laptop in there.

For the price (even full price), you can't beat this for a notebook backpack.
