Customer Review: More Than A Basic Card

I have a feeling a lot of people are getting this to replace their Audigy 2's since Creative has decided to drop support for it in Windows 7. I have had an Audigy 2 for 7 years now that is coupled with an old (but good) set of Klipsch ProMedia 4.1's. First off, if you are into the looks of a card then you will be disappointed. The card isn't as long as an Audigy and it doesn't have the slick black board and gold hardware like the Audigy. It's just a green PCI card. Does that mean it's a bad card? Not at call. In fact, it sounds very good. But does it sound as good as an Audigy? Yes and no. You will definitely need to spend some time with the mixer. And if you haven't learned yet, all presets in every mixer-software sound awful. You really need to tweak it to your system. I am an audio purest in the sense that I don't think anything needs to be in surround if you have a beautiful stereo signal and the speakers to reproduce it. So I usually have everything mixed into a big stereo signal for my 4.1's. For MP3's I noticed a very noticeable, compressed sound. It definitely did not have the vast openness of the Audigy 2 sound and that's why I deducted a star. It almost makes me feel like my ears need to be popped when listening. For gaming, the sound has been very good so far and on-par with the Audigy. Drivers were simple and elegant. It's not the giant pile of 40 different apps and bloatware that you are used to with Creative. It's all in one with the Turtle Beach drivers. And, yes, they support 64-bit systems.
In conclusion, I am very happy with it. Especially for the price. If I had the money I admit I would go for the high-end Creative Xi-Fi, but I am in no position to do that. Audio quality falls just shy of the Audigy. But for most people it won't be an issue. And again, you need to tweak that mixer.
