Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of TRENDnet TE100-S5 5-Port Ethernet Switch (5 x 10/100Mbps Auto-MDIX RJ-45 Ports)

Customer Review: TRENDnet TE100-S5/AS
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought this switch to allow me to use more than one computer and another device a Captel 800i captioned telephone on the same Verizon DSL line with a Westell 6100 modem/router. The Westell 6100 only has one ethernet port so I bought the switch to allow me to hook more devices to the internet. The ease of use hooking it up and using it is amazing. I turned off the modem/router and I plugged the switch in and hooked the dsl line to one of the ethernet ports in the switch (it doesn't matter which port!). I then hooked the ethernet lines from two computers and another from the CapTel 800i phone to the other free ports. I turned on the modem/router and started using both computers and the phone immediately. No programs to load, no set-up, no rebooting of the computers, nothing! Pure plug and play! It was stress free and absolutely wonderful. If only setting up routers and modems were this easy. A great product, reliable, easy to set-up, and use. The case looks a little cheap, but it is a great product for the money. Can't say enough about it.

Customer Review: FANTASTIC! don't be fooled by the manual...
Summary: 5 Stars

Got this because I don't want to use wireless, and needed to get two laptops online at the same time.
On opening, I read the manual, in the "technical details" section it says "this product was not designed to let two computers get online at the same time". WRONG! They CAN and DO get online at the same time (at least for me). I just watched two separate videos from the internet on each laptop, at the same time!

The manual states it is describing two products: TE100-S5 and TE100-S8.
I have the TE100-S5 (that's what is printed on the box, above the company logo).
So, presumably, I have the cheaper of the two products, and it still connects 2 devices at the same time.
Great to finally own a product that does MORE than what it said it would.

Of course, this is just the first day, hopefully it will continue to run great for many months.
Connect input to socket 1, outputs to sockets 2 and 3, and you're done!

Highly recommended!

UPDATE: 1 year later, still works!

Customer Review: Works great
Summary: 5 Stars

I know this switch's data sheet states that it is not intended to be used as a sharing connection hub between multiple computers - but, it does. I have it connected right now to a single RJ-45 cable coming from my router and have my wife's desktop and my laptop connected through this TE100-S5 and both are right now on-line and working very well. I see very little if any reduction in download speeds with this setup.
UPDATE 4/25/10. My setup is still going strong and I have permanently set this great switch up downline of my modem/router to service all of the above listed computers plus an additional connection for another laptop. When the grandkids are visiting this TE100-S5 really gets a workout and has never failed to do its job, providing constant and fast internet connection to a desktop and 2 laptops all running at the same time.... and doing so running cool as can be. This is a really good way to share a RJ-45 cable without the fuss of an additional router or the frustration of wireless settings etc.

Customer Review: Not quite what I needed
Summary: 3 Stars

I got one of these a while back for my home network, and it has worked great. Because of this, when I needed some switches for a network I was building at my church, I ordered 3 of these. Alas, I couldn't get them to work with their older 10BaseT network - for some unknown reason it would connect with the network but it wouldn't work with the church's DHCP server. I opened 2 of them and they both had the same result. I tried one of them at home and it worked fine, so I don't think they were defective - there was just some kind of incompatibility. I borrowed a Netgear switch from my work and tried it and it worked, so I ordered 3 of the same model NETGEAR FS608 8-Port Fast Ethernet Switch to replace the TRENDnets. They have been working great. I returned the 3 TRENDnets and Amazon was great enough to refund nearly the entire amount for them even though I had opened 2 of them. That's why I just love Amazon!!

Customer Review: Useful, reliable
Summary: 5 Stars

I got this switch because I only have one Ethernet port in my bedroom. I am very surprised by its size, weight, and functionality. Also, I was able to mount it on the wall right next to the Ethernet port with no problems. Currently, I have four Ethernet cables plugged into it.
1. My Desktop computer. This is always on, and I am almost always downloading something or playing online games.
2. My Playstation 3. Again, almost always playing online games (I have a roommate, so sometimes they are both being used at the same time)
3. My laptop computer, for when I am video chatting or doing some bandwidth- intense surfing
4. An extra cord for when my roommate/friends come over and they plug in their laptops for faster download speeds

I have never had a problem where one device was slowing down another, but I have fairly fast internet at home so that may contribute to the speeds. The reliability and functionality of this device makes me forget its there sometimes.
