Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of TRENDnet 54Mbps Wireless G PCI Adapter TEW-423PICustomer Review: Very inexpensive and effective wireless PCI adapter Summary: 4 Stars
I installed this wireless PCI adapter in an old Dell XPS-T600 machine. The process went flawlessly. The software installation worked fine as well. Trendnet's software interface for wireless network management is rather simplistic, but superior to the one provided by Windows.
Signal strength: Very good. In my case, the computer resides on the top floor of the house and the Linksys WRT45G wireless router resides on the second floor, about 20 feet away from being directly above/below one another. I usually get a 36Mbps or higher signal showing, but transfer rates across the Internet are very fast (200+ potential). Computer-to-Computer is decent too (even via Remote Desktop).
Network connection: Whenever you boot up, the Trendnet software will auto-start and establish the wireless connection. If for any reason you ever lose your preferred network, you can go through the Windows software to specify it, but you're better off just doing it through the Trendnet interface. Only on a couple of occasions did the network card not immediately try connecting to the Internet, but all I had to do was to disable/enable the software (very easy to do). That's the only reason why I'm giving this product 4 stars instead of 5.
Reliability: I've had this card for about 4 months with no problems whatsoever.
This has to be one of the best network cards you can buy for under $25. It's great for taking an old PC workstation that has a wired network card or none at all and making it possible to access other computers in your home or accessing the Internet, without any wires. Just remember to install a firewall and anti-virus software before putting your computer on-line with any wireless networking adapter.
NOTE: A related security hint--create a shortcut to the Trendnet software on your desktop or quick launch toolbar. Whenever you leave your computer and don't plan on using the Internet or network for a long while (like overnight or away for a weekend), disable connectivity by selecting the appropriate option in the software (you can also do this on the firewall, but this way is more reliable). This way you keep your computer off the Internet when not in use, minimizing the chance of some external hacker finding your computer.
