Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of TRENDnet 54 Mbps Wireless G Broadband Router TEW-432BRP (Blue)

Customer Review: A very good router for the price!
Summary: 5 Stars

I wasn't expecting much when I purchased this router at the cheap price, but it has a lot of advanced settings and nice settings. It supports WPA/WPA2 which supports PSK [TKIP] and EAP [AES]. It has 4 switch ports and great for home networks/wireless networks. Also great for wireless security. You can change some neat things like the Antenna transmit power etc. The router also supports RIP, virtual servers, remote management, IPSec, SMTP for sending Log records and even more.

This router appears cheap, but is definitely great for your network security. I believe it has a built in NIDS because it has the ability to STOP port scans and STOP UDP Flood attacks and that goes without saying sometimes it might be wrong and you might have to change some settings [for gaming]. All I know is that the router can drop packets from various outside IP addresses that might be suspicious. Somtimes I personally research the fraudulent IP address and the Trendnet NIDS is correct.

Aside from the nice features the router gives advanced consumers extra options. Options such as static routing which is good for home servers/file servers, extra routers etc. You can also set the metric for the static routes manually. This router has definitely impressed me and so far I have had no problems with this great product. I purchased the item new and it shipped new.

Customer Review: Poor customer service. Faulty router
Summary: 1 Stars

I bought this product about 7 months back. Since then I can only say it has worked partially for me. The configuration SW that comes with it and user guide make the installation VERY EASY. I could get it setup in less than 15 min. But thats where all the good things come to an end with this router. First I had trouble where the wireless access would keep breaking for 4-2 sec every 3-5 min. This was extremely annoying since I would be loggout out of gaming sites in between the games. I called their customer service center. Representatives are NEVER available. Someone will answer the call and say that he is only an operator and technical support person will call me back. This happened for 3-4 times, finally I got fed up and blasted this operator, he immediately connected me to a rep. The rep was not of any use. Emails were exchanged for nearly 1 month with no resolution. Finally in oct-07 they came up with SW upgrade for router and I installed it and that seems to fix the issue. Then recently suddenly the router cannot handle more than 1 link. I have 2 PCs. The first one once its active the second one slows down dramatically. Again I am trying to talk with technical support but they are not returning the calls.
very poor experience. Stay away from this router. I got lured due to cost ($10 after MIR) but now I realize its not worth it.

Customer Review: Good performance for the price
Summary: 4 Stars

For an economy router this thing is pretty good. I've been using it for about a month and it's performed reliably over that time. Setup could have been easier, but once I got it working everything was fine.

The configuration utility on this router was not nearly as polished as the one on my Netgear 802.11b router. However, if I wanted to use a fairly standard setup then it probably would have been a breeze. Unfortunately for me, I have a home server that takes care of my network and I wanted to use this router more as an access point. This took an hour or so of playing with the configuration until I got the router to work with DHCP disabled. I discovered that if you are not well versed in networking jargon then the poorly documented configuration utility will be a major headache (for non-standard configurations).

The signal strength is decent. I typically get a 48Mbps connection from about 15 feet away. When I use it from about 30 feet away through a few walls the connection drops down to around 36Mbps. I have not experienced any noticeable dropped packets, and have had very few dropped connections. So far I haven't had to restart the device at all.

If you're able to pick this router up for a good price then I would recommend it.

Customer Review: This router did the trick
Summary: 5 Stars

I am a novice when it comes to wireless systems and this is the first router I have ever purchased. I know enough about computers to understand the instructions for connecting this router. Connecting the wiring was very easy. The main computer downstairs (windows 7) is hard wired to the router and operates the same as when connected directly to the DSL modem. I began the software set up with the included CD. I don't know what most of the settings meant, so I went with the default settings until I got to setting up a security password. I was able to follow the step by step instructions and set up the password easily. I connected a wireless antenna (sold separately) to the upstairs computer (windows xp) and found the TRENDnet signal available and password protected. Success! The wireless internet speed is just as fast as the hard wired internet speed on my downstairs computer. I have been using this router for 8 weeks and have been very happy with it. Surfing the internet has been so glitch-free, I don't even remember that it is wireless! Installing the TRENDnet router was far better than running CAT5 cable through the floor and upstairs to the second computer. I highly recommend this router.

Customer Review: Fairly easy to set up, but quite temperamental.
Summary: 3 Stars

Router is initially quite easy to set up. Lots of interesting and advanced features if you want to mess with it, and the price is great.

The main issue is its sporadic functionality. When it does work it has great speed, stability, and is wonderful to use. Every so often it drops the wireless connectivity completely and needs some troubleshooting. Occasionally all I need to do is restart the router a few times to get it to work again, but I have on occasion needed to tweak a setting to get it to work. I'm not sure if tweaking a setting or two actually does the trick, but I've done everything from changing the antenna signal power to adding/removing security to get it to start working again. It does in fact function well for about two weeks before failing, and it only takes me 1-2 hours to figure out how to get it up again so I don't mind the hassle. For the price I consider it a worthwhile inconvenience.

Overall I'd say get it if you're willing to put up with its occasional quirk, but just be ready to spend awhile every so often fixing it.
