Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of TRENDnet 2-Port USB KVM Switch Kit (Includes 2x KVM Cables) TK-207K (Blue)

Customer Review: Works Great
Summary: 5 Stars

I was very skeptical about this product, given some of the mixed reactions it received. But given the price and the overall reputation of the manufacturer, I decided to give it a try.

This product works great. It switches every time, without fail. The only snafu I had in switching from my desktop to my laptop is the laptop would not come on. I thought it was a manufacturing flaw, and was ready to ship it back, when I remembered that my dell B130 (POS) has a function button for switching to monitors. Once I pressed that, it worked beautifully.

The only other problem I had was not with this product, but with my graphics card. When ever I switch over to the laptop, I have to again and again change the graphics card setting from laptop to monitor. But I found a keyboard shortcut that alleviates that step.

This is a great product. But please note: it does not switch audio, and it does not switch internet. I am a student and it works great for switching between my desktop and my laptop, since my notes are on the laptop. If you are looking for a functional and reliable KVM, buy it.

Customer Review: Works great in "nontraditional" setup, too
Summary: 4 Stars

You connect whatever you need. In my case, I have a laptop (desktop replacement) and a Q1 umpc (tablet) hooked together. My setup has a USB keyboard, A big monitor, a USB mouse, and the computers' own built-in monitors and input systems (trackpad & stylus) all functioning together. I set the computers' graphics properties to "dual display" (laptop& monitor), so that when I switch machines via the kvm switch, I can use the "off" machine as if it were not connected. Everything seems hot-swappable so far, I've been able to remove and re-plug the mouse, keyboard, monitor at my whim. The single mouse, monitor and keyboard is great for copying files between machines (on an existing home network). One person can multitask on separate machines/apps without moving an inch!
I didn't give 5 stars only because I just started "playing" with this device. Actually, I was introduced to the term KVM switch just minutes before ordering this on Amazon. Also, it is not perfect (for me) because the KVM cables themselves could be a little longer and more flexible.

Customer Review: Problem with PC with Windows 7, switch gone bad?
Summary: 1 Stars

I have had the TK 207 for about a year. I had the switch working a PC with Vista Ultimate and a PC with Windows XP Home Edition, both doing fine for quite a while. A couple of months ago I got a great price on a loaded Dell with Windows 7 OS, and then the trouble started. The PC with Vista Ultimate still works great when I use the button for that computer. The button which used to bring up the PC with XP, now shows a blank screen when I select the PC with Windows 7, even though the computer ON light suggests the monitor signal should be there. I have had this problem repeatedly, to the point that I'm looking for a different switch - if there is a better one out there. I have been thinking that maybe the TK 207 has gone bad. In reading other reviews, it appears that there are problems with this switch. (My computers are all on a home network which includes 2 printers, 4 PCs total, and one iMac. Everything is working fine, including the networked 1TB external backup drive which is constantly backing 3 computers up.)

Customer Review: Not for use with linux and wireless USB keyboards/mice
Summary: 3 Stars

I bought this KVM to switch between my Windows XP machine and a Linux machine running Gentoo Linux. I'm using the Microsoft 4000 wireless USB keyboard/mouse combo. Everything worked as expected with the Windows machine, but with the linux machine the keyboard/mouse were disconnecting every 5-6 seconds. Whenever this happened the keyboard/mouse were unreponsive for about a second.

I got in touch with Trendnet tech support to see if this was a known issue. To their credit, they were very quick to respond to a couple of my emails. However, their recommended solution left a lot to be desired. Basically, they told me that they were aware of problems with wireless devices and that I should switch to a wired setup. Not the answer I wanted to hear. It's not like wireless is something new. They've had plenty of time to get it right.

Anyway, I bought a IOgear USB KVM for about the same price as what I paid for this one and everything works the way it's supposed to.

Customer Review: A frustrating problem with this switch.
Summary: 2 Stars

I rolled the dice when I bought this cheaper KVM switch. I wish now that I would have purchased a more expensive one.
The unit seems to be designed ok, the cables are long enough and hook up was pretty simple. The owners manual and documentation are pretty good and the Trendnet website is somewhat helpful if needed.
The problem that I've had with this unit is that it will switch without cause. I'll be working on one computer, with the other one shut off, and all of the sudden the KVM starts switching back and forth between the two computers. Sometimes it won't stop and won't settle on a computer at all, it just keeps flashing back and forth.
I didn't install the Trendnet supplied software because the manual that came with the KVM said that the switch would operate fine without it and that the software was for "advanced features".
I would not recommend this KVM switch. I would recommend spending a little more money on a switch with better ratings.
