Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of TRENDnet 2-Port PS/2 KVM Switch Kit (Includes 2x KVM Cables) TK-205K (Blue)Customer Review: Absolutely worthless with Linux Summary: 1 Stars
I found it refreshing that this product specifically included Linux in its list of compatible operating systems. It's nice seeing more and more manufacturers acknowledging the far superior OS that I use! :) Unfortunately, that's where my happiness ends.
I was thrilled when my order arrived and I quickly set about hooking things up. Or would have...if the cables hadn't been way too short. I'm not sure what the logic behind this is, but the cables are woefully short, especially the keyboard and mouse cables. They're barely 1.5 feet long; the monitor cable is longer, but still too short for my needs. The two computers are just above floor level, their backs approximately five feet apart. I originally placed the switch unit on the computer desk, right in the middle, on the top shelf. Then I unpacked the cables and ATTEMPTED to connect computer #1 to the unit but the monitor cable wouldn't reach. So I moved the switch and connected the cables, thinking I'd deal with computer #2 later (i.e., moving things around so they could both be connected to the switch).
Great!, everything's correctly connected, so I fired up #1. Nothing. No display on the monitor. No response to keyboard or trackball movement (the sleep light on the monitor would have turned green). No lights lit up on the switch unit. Just NOTHING.
Considering this switch needs neither a driver nor any software, I figured it couldn't possibly NOT work, regardless of operating system. That plus the fact that the computers and peripherals are standard stuff (HP, Logitech, etc.), it seemed like a no-brainer.
I tried everything I could think of but with the same result: nothing. I e-mailed support, making clear that I know what I'm doing (I started programming and administering UNIX, then Linux, systems in 1987), and asking if they had any other ideas before I sent it back. Their response offered nothing that would solve the problem. The unit is packed up back in its box and ready to go.
This was a total, utter disappointment. Despite their claim that it works with Linux, my advice if you're a Linux user is to stay away from this product. If it doesn't work with Kubuntu, I doubt it'll work with anything else.
