Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Transcend JetFlash V30 - 4 GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive TS4GJFV30 (Black)

Customer Review: good low cost product, for your valuable data . . .
Summary: 4 Stars

The Transcend 4GB JetFlash is a good performer, that is very competitively priced. It is just 0.6 inches wide, 0.2 inches thick, and 2.3 inches long with the cap attached. The case is hard shiny smooth plastic, with no clips or provisions for attaching to anything, except for a small hole at one end, where a lanyard or strap could be attached. The case appears to be hard enough to resist most casual damage, and the cap has a nice tight positive lock. The USB connector is fixed, not retractable. Not losing the tiny cap, might be problem.

Supposedly compatible with USB 2.3, transfer speed appears to be relatively fast. The drive comes with software to restore and synchronize data. It has a blue indicator light to verify connectivity, and which blinks to indicate activity.

Memory prices at Amazon often fluctuate, and sellers frequently change, but if you shop carefully, you can often get fabulous deals. Some third party sellers are reliable, but even if you pay a little more, buying direct from Amazon is just good insurance. If you do happen to get a bad drive, replacement is a quick and trouble-free process.

Many never think about the possible consequences, if a drive with sensitive personal information is lost. But should it ever happen, it could be a disaster that leaves you with a very sick feeling in your stomach. Exercising care, and treating your flash drive in accordance with its real value, might be good advice for us all. Tiny drives can easily be lost, so it is somewhat disappointing, that Transcend did not provide a lanyard or strap, or some more substantial provisions for carrying it, or attaching it to something.

Customer Review: Transcend 4 GB USB Stick - Not Bad At All
Summary: 4 Stars

Transcend flash memory sure is becoming more common these days. This is a nice USB stick, somehow smaller in your hand than the pictures show. The small hole for attaching a ring or lanyard is very small but well designed into the body.

As far as the Jetflash software is concerned I have simply reformatted this guy and I am not using it. It wasn't terrible, but I have no need for it. I am not a fan of Sandisk's U3 software and this stuff isn't changing my mind (actually has less in terms of features). Once again, it worked ok, I tested it once just out of curiousity. But ultimately, I'll stick to copying and pasting files to this guy and using a seperate software for encryption.

As far as the price, you really can't argue with this. The value is great for the capacity. While this guy is slow, all my USB sticks are slow. Till something faster comes out, it's a good idea to just get the biggest drive you can.

This guy has one of those caps that is easily lost if you're not careful. The SanDisk 4 GB Cruzer Micro USB Flash Drive with U3 (SDCZ6-4096-A11) has the advantage of the retractable USB connector so you never have to worry about the cap. It does run about 10 bucks more though.

As far as reputation, Transcend still has a track record to establish. So far so good.

Good luck with your new memory stick.

Enjoy.

Customer Review: Sleek little flash drive
Summary: 5 Stars

Although 4 GB flash drives can be found everywhere and manufactured by many brands, some are clunkier than others, and the Transcend Jetflash is among the sleeker ones. Shaped like a large vitamin with its rounded edges, it fits easily into even the most tightly spaced USB ports, primarily because it uses a removable cap instead of the rotating cover that some manufacturers use. Obviously, if you are prone to losing caps, then you might want to consider a different brand/model. It is so slim that you can slip it into your pocket and forget that it's there.

The black shiny case with its lime-green band where cap meets body looks cool. I consider it a stealth flash drive since it tends to "disappear" on dark surfaces. The hole for a lanyard is really too tiny to use unless you have a relatively stiff piece of elastic and good eyes; however, this isn't an issue for me since I'm more of a pocket or handbag storer.

All flash drives will fail eventually, so don't use yours for permanent back-up. I've had good luck with Transcend, and for that reason, I expect better than average reliability.

Customer Review: No complaints - works great
Summary: 5 Stars

I am a Linux user but sometimes use Windows and this USB drive works better between the two than SanDisk cruzer. The problem is SanDisk's embedded U3 software that you can't erase sometimes confuses my Linux computer. I didn't notice much difference in speed between the better-know SanDisk and this drive. One thing I like better about the Transcend drive is that it is smaller than most other brands, which really comes in handy when you have side-by-side USB ports or the USB is in a weird place (like on those Dell Omnis). Haven't used the software. Since these flash drives are very small so make sure you keep your eye on it. Once I thought I lost it but it was just hiding in my backpack. Overall I am very pleased with the 4GB version and will probably purchase another.

Customer Review: Nice design, reliability questionable
Summary: 3 Stars

I really like the design/styling of the Transcend JetFlash V30. The color coding for memory capacity is a nice touch, nothing new, but helpful. As beautiful as they are, they do scuff up quickly.

Speed wise, no complaints. Reasonable performance for price. They seem to be at least as fast as my OCZ Rally2, which claims to be fast.

My biggest concern is reliability. I've bought 2 and 4 GB versions of the JetFlash. I've checked both regularly with Apple's Disk Utility prior to storing data on them and both have required minor "repairs" twice in under a month. This is troubling as I haven't used them a lot and the most physical abuse they've experienced with being carried in a shirt pocket.
