Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Transcend 8 GB Class 6 SDHC Flash Memory Card with USB 2.0 Card Reader TS8GSDHC6-S5WCustomer Review: Great for long trips abroad Summary: 5 Stars
I actually bought this card many months ago before they introduced the reader with it as a package deal, and I am considering buying another one just for the reader. Another reviewer mentions to "think twice" if this is why you might want to buy it, and I am... but the card really is good on its own in any case. I took it to a 3-week pilgrimage in Spain (where computer access was little to none) and was able to save a whopping 729 photographs on a 7.1MP Canon Elph -- plus room for more, I later found. I didn't upload any of the photos until I returned stateside, and many are still on the camera so that I can show them to people using the camera itself.
For computer usage, I found the card to be decent, but not spectacular. It runs ok with an Asus Eee PC on Linux, and ok on a Dell with Vista. Try popping the thing into your Treo, though, and Windows Mobile freaks out a bit.
I think I'll still get another one, though.
Customer Review: Excellent product Summary: 5 Stars
Prior to purchasing this product, I read the reviews written by other customers. I wanted some reassurance because I had never heard of Transcend. Some of the reviews made me worry about the quality and reliability of this Transcend SDHC card and the compact card reader. Before I purchased this product, I took a look at the manufacturer's website. When the product arrived in the mail, I immediately used the card reader to download images from the SanDisk 4GB SDHC card that I had been using in my new Canon camera (Canon PowerShot SD880 IS). I inserted the card in the Transend card reader, plugged the reader into my Mac computer (PowerBook G4), the Canon browser utility immediately recognized it, and the download was fast and without any problems. Then, I inserted the new Transcend 8 GB card into my camera and snapped a couple shots of my messy desk. No problems with the card. The tiny USB card reader fits into a camera case. Great product.
Customer Review: Card reader makes this useful to me Summary: 3 Stars
I like the capacity 8 GB gets you for pictures even from 10+ megapixel cameras (Canon Powershot A1000IS). I'm a little disappointed that the "class 6" doesn't really seem that much faster than my old card but I haven't done a thorough study so maybe I'm storing a lot more data (than my old camera) in about the same amount of time. I was also disappointed that the Kodak picture printer we use doesn't read the card (I assume because there is something different about the class 6.) So the card reader is critical in the two-step process I always have to use to get the pictures to a computer (because my old laptop doesn't have a direct SD slot) and then onto some other memory device (like an old card.) The Kodak picture printer has a USB slot but the casing of the machine doesn't allow the card reader to fit into it. Maybe the whole thing is the incompatibility of trying to use newer technology in older devices.
Customer Review: Reader not recognized Summary: 3 Stars
Although the card is fine, which I the main reason I purchased, the reader doesn't appear to be properly recognized on any USB port on either my desktop or laptop, both running XP. Both computers 'see' the drive and I can navigate to the files on the card, however, if I try to copy any files to the card, I get a message indicating the card is locked...which it isn't...I've set the lock on the card to both positions several times to make sure. The card reads fine in the built in SD reader on my laptop and through a SanDisk reader plugged into my desktop.
I tried downloading the driver and app from the Transcend website but it aborts because it doesn't 'see' that the reader is attached...tried it with the card in and with the card out...same result.
If the main reason you're buying this combo is the nice little reader, you might think twice.
Customer Review: No camera, or brains required Summary: 5 Stars
This little widget, to me, is more valuable than the bread slicing machine.
I recently purchased a new digital camera that uses the newer
SDHC memory card, and immediately found myself in a quagmire. Both of
my printers, that have memory card inputs, and Pictbridge capabilities,
would not recognize the SDHC card. Further, I had to on-line download
two major program files before the one printer would even read a Pict-
bridge connection. I'm old-fashioned enough to prefer the capability
to insert my memory card directly in the computer, with the option of
just loading the contents in to a file, that I specify, without having
some unwanted "Editor Program" maul it around. My compliments to Trans-
cend, or any other reader maker for providing me with that option!
