Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Transcend 8 GB Class 6 SDHC Flash Memory Card TS8GSDHC6

Customer Review: Gave me a big scare - Perhaps I got a return?
Summary: 2 Stars

I waited a while to give this review, because I was hesitant to slam a product. I wanted to like the 4 GB card, but I am afraid to use it other than a back-up.

I got a 4 GB transcend card a couple days before my trip to the Boundary Waters. I needed it quickly, so I paid for the 2 day shipping with the "frustration free packaging"

Right away when I put it in my camera I noticed something I thought not quite right. The counter on my Nikon gave an estimate of 538 pictures in fine Jpeg mode. My other 4 GB card, a Promaster, gives me an estimate of 555 pictures with the same setting as Jpeg fine.
I disregarded it thinking maybe different brands give different estimates.I also figured maybe the counter just gave this card a different reading and would get about the same as my other card.

After about 200 to 300 pictures saved on the card and suddenly while shooting a sunrise (with the setting at raw) my camera wouldn't shoot. I got the dreaded error that my camera could not read my card and that the card may be damaged. I cried and panicked for a good hour or so, because these were photos taken from about two days on a trip and I wouldn't be able to return to those spots. I feared the worst. Fortunately someone thought to put the card in her camera. It worked, but the thumbnails looked odd for a short time. Afterwards I put the card back in my camera and it works. I don't know how long it will work and I question the reliability. I'm keeping mostly because the plastic case holds my 2GB Promaster card. Until I can get a card reader(in hopes that will read the card if it fails), I'm retiring the card and only using it when I am about to shoot experiments or something I don't mind losing. I suspect some kind of defect, now that even after formatting, the counter is still lower than my other card.

Because of this,I am also worried about the "frustration free" packaging. I loved the concept, but I really hope I am not getting someone's returned product.

Customer Review: Not 8GB! Actually a 7.44 GB
Summary: 3 Stars

When I first discovered the Transcend 8GB SDHC Card (SD 2.0 SPD Class 6) I was truly delighted. It seemed to be a high quality, high capacity well priced SDHC card with high transfer rate.

I initially bought two of them. When they arrived and I started to use them I discovered two things:

The 8GB Cards don't hold 8GB of data. Even with the "Liberal" and perhaps questionable practice of using a Decimal (Base 10) approach to describe capacity of a Binary (Base 2) two device, this device doesn't even have 8GB by this "Liberal" standard.

Many companies, trying to save money on manufacturing, quote the storage capacity of their products in the decimal system so as to make things seem a bit larger than they actually are. A KB to a computer is 1024 Bytes whereas in non computer nomenclature a Kilo is 1000.

The SanDisk SD Cards register at 7.6 GB (Using Binary Measure even after format and file system overhead was taken into account), whereas these Transcend SD Cards only had 7.44 GB (Using Binary Measure also including file system overhead) which fell short of 8,000,000,000 when converting to Decimal.

It seems that the manufacture got the 8GB number claimed on the label by doing some creative accounting which rounds up to the nearest Gigabyte.

Now for many this might not be a big deal, but if you actually have video that takes an actual 8GB and wanted to play it on a portable device, then sort of 8GB doesn't really work for you.

I can't say to the file, "Well when you round up to the nearest GB then there is enough space for you"

The other thing that I noticed was that the SanDisk 8GB SDHC CARD (SD 2.0 Class 2) handled data transfers just as fast as this Class 6 did. I thought this was supposed to be faster?

Overall an okay SDHC card but BE AWARE THAT IT ISN'T REALLY 8GB!

Customer Review: Garbage
Summary: 1 Stars

I bought a new Digital Camera and bought this 8GB SCHC card with it. It showed up a few days after the camera so not a big deal. UNFORTUNATELY it is a piece of garbage. Took 32 pictures at 14mp and it said the 8GB card was full. Not only that but 10% of the pics were corrupt. I reformatted the card with the camera and got 47 pics with the same reult (card full/ lots of corrupt pics)3rd time i got 152 pics with about 25% corruption. 4th time 52 pics and same results. I then reformated with the PC, same thing, reformat with pc and the camera, same results. I was leaving for a 3 week grand canyon rafting trip 2 days later so I had to go buy another SC card. I bought a different brand (Delkin) of course and it works perfectly.
On return from the trip I called Beach Camera but since I didnt have to original packaging they wouldnt replace it. Who ever keeps the little cardboard sleeve the cards come in after you have to rip it in half to get the card out. I guess thats one way to get around warranty issues. They told me to call Transcend and they would replace it since it has a 1 year warranty. SO, I called Transcend and was told ,"No problem just fill out the online form and mail it back and in a few weeks well send you another card." PROBLEM, The online form requires you to put in the product # found on the cardboard sleeve or you cant even finish filling out the form. Its not anywhere on the card itself. SO, I had to call Transcend again and get the product # to finish the form. The Cusomer service rep did tell me the card has a lifetime warranty vs electrical problems (not 1 year like Beach Camera told me). Physical damge voids warranty obviously.

I hope the new card works.....even though I'll probably never use it since I had to buy another card before the trip.

Customer Review: If You Do Not Mind Being Ripped Off For Shipping...
Summary: 1 Stars

The price for this item was the best, but what I have to warn all of you about is the shipping. If you are ordering more than 1 item from this company, DO NOT believe the shipping chart they show! This is a complete bait and switch from what is listed on they're company site shipping list. I ordered 4 of these cards and it all shipped together, my order clearly said that the shipping charge was $6.95 for USPS First Class Mail padded pack, that must have cost, maybe $5.00 to ship. I was charged $27.92 for shipping!

I know what you are thinking, that you review your order completely before accepting and I missed it....I am the fool that missed that these liars charged me the shipping rate x4.... well I had ordered about 6 other things from all different companies and somehow I missed this. My fault yes, but just don't let it be yours!

I was going to cancel this order on Sun. morning when I noticed the HUGE shipping cost and they had already emailed me that morning 9/28/08, saying that they had processed and shipped my order, so I can not cancel it because it has been 'shipped' already! On Sunday, through USPS!?! LIARS!! I am stuck paying the highway robbery price of shipping anyways, so I send them a complaint email, through amazon, that I am still waiting on a response from them. Oh, and did I mention, that then 3 days later on Wed. 10/1/08 I get another email from them telling me my items had actually now shipped! Irony really setting in now, that I had received all other ordered items now except the one I paid the most for...I could have canceled my order and stopped this rip-off from happening. Yes, I am the fool, but they are the liars. Please spend the extra 5¢ and order from ANYONE ELSE.

Very disappointed and dissatisfied customer!

Customer Review: Great Card
Summary: 4 Stars

This is one heck of a good card given its speed (6mb/s). This is a time where "the price is right" I recently bought an "Extreme" 8 Gig memory card (30 mb/s) and was very happy with it. I figured I would buy the Transcend Card because it was inexpensive and would make a good back up card. I have a Nikon D90 which has a decent frame rate of 4.5 fps. I was very pleased when I found the Transcend was able to keep up with the camera at least up to a point. I was able to fire about 20 shots without any slow down compared to my 30mb/s card. The 30 mb/s card obviously was able to handle longer runs of multiple frame shots but it's rare that you are going to shoot more than 5 or 10 shots in a row.

It comes down to value for the buck. I spent 80 dollars for the 8gig 30mb/s card and only a little over 12 for the 8gig 6mb/s Transcend. This is a time where the loss of speed is not noticable enough to worry about when taking normal vs. action photography. If I was shooting a sports event the Transcend would still do pretty well considering its ability to buffer the shots. If you run movies the card is able to handle the movie mode (at 24 fps) without any slow down.

This is a good deal for sure. I was a happy man when I checked it out and found the speed loss was insignifigant. I consider this amazing given the Extreme is rated at 30 mb/s and the Transcend is running at 6mb/s!! I will probably buy a few more for the 12 dollar price ! I am very pleased for a product at a very good price that performs much better than expected.
