Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Transcend 32 GB 133x CompactFlash Memory Card TS32GCF133

Customer Review: Slow card, errors when used w/ D300
Summary: 2 Stars

I purchased this to supplement my existing 8gb Sandisk Extreme III card for a recent photography trip to Alaska. I shoot a Nikon D300, so I felt comfortable with the purchase based on a number of other reviewers (and the price was definitely right). Turns out, this was not a good idea. After a week of use, here is my opinion:

Pros:
-Great price
-Large size means fewer changes of memory cards
-Works great for most photo applications (slow speed won't matter if you aren't shooting action)

Cons:
-For action photography, the buffer fills up relatively quickly (started to lag considerably after about 4-6 high-speed shots on my D300, which was not the case w/ Sandisk Extreme III)
-Card would spontaneously refuse to be recognized by my camera. About 3 times over a 3-day period, my camera would suddenly stop shooting, and give me an error message about a "damaged / unreadable memory card". Reseating the card and restarting the camera were not effective. The first two times this happened, I gave the card to a friend who had a Canon SLR, and once he put the card in his camera and gave it back to me, it started working again (although it created a new numbering structure, so if I had shot 150 times before the freeze and 50 times afterwards, when reviewing my photos on the camera, it would show 1 through 150 "of 150", then start at 1 through 50 "of 50"). The third time it froze, this didn't work either. Fortunately, I was able to access / transfer the files once I had a computer and memory card reader, but it certainly cut my shooting day short.

I plan on returning this card and getting a faster, and hopefully more stable, card from Sandisk. For me, it's not worth the risk of losing photos or losing shooting time. On the bright side, the company I bought it from (TheMemStore) has been great about working with me to process the return / refund.

Customer Review: Good Value if you're not shooting bursts.
Summary: 4 Stars

I bought 2 of these 32GB cards to use with my 5D MK II on a road trip. I didn't think I'd fill it up with stills but I was planning on trying out the nifty 1080p video feature so I wanted to play it safe. I also carried a Lumix LX3 with 2 x 16GB cards as backup. This was my first big trip without a film camera and wanted to take full advantage of shooting digitally. This meant a lot more casual shooting and lots of multiple shots for stitching/HDR experiments. After formatting each card in the camera, I shot as I normally would. I tend to focus on landscapes and some portraiture but no fast moving subjects like children or animals. It functioned without any issues. I was a bit nervous about the card failing since I did not bring a laptop and we were hiking in the desert. No data was hurt and everything went as smoothly as possible. I shot about 15.4 GB worth of video. That sounds like a ton but really isn't much considering how large the files are coming out of the 5D. I did not notice any dropped frames or hiccups while shooting/playing back video. longest clip I shot was 10 minutes long. Rest of the clips are short vignettes, about 20 to 30 seconds each. Only time I noticed the slow speed of the card was when I shot some frames in rapid succession. Not even burst shooting mind you. Once I've shot about 10 raw images, it takes a while for the buffer to dump to the card. which is understandable since that's over 200MB of data being shoveled. I could continue to shoot some more frames but had to wait to review the images. Not really an issue for me since I don't run into this problem often with my shooting style. If you do plan on shooting sports or events where many, many shots need to be captured in quick succession, this will be a problem. However, I found the card to be a GREAT value. I was able to shoot through out the trip without worrying about running out of room.

Customer Review: Nice inexpensive high-capacity CF for cameras
Summary: 4 Stars

I recently bought this 32GB compact flash card for my Nikon D700 because I found that I was eating up the capacity of my 8GB card by taking all my photos in both RAW and HQ Jpeg. My 8GB card (a SanDisk Extreme Ducati) was rated as one of the fastest on the market, but there are currently no equally fast 32GB cards on the market. So I ended up going for this Transcend card for higher capacity.

According to highly regarded websites that measure the actual card speeds, The Transcend 32GB card should only be giving me 8-10 MB/Sec actual store speed in the camera -- Remarkably slower than the 21-28 MB/sec of the SanDisk Ducati. I can see the difference if I am taking lots of photos in rapid succession, but as one would expect there is little difference if you are not clicking the shutter like a machinegun. The biggest difference is when transferring the photos to the computer, where a fast card like the Ducati can dramatically reduce time spent waiting.

All that said, the 32GB Transcend card is actually cheaper than the 8GB Ducati. And it has been a great and reliable card for me. For the price, I recommend this card if you need the big capacity.

Customer Review: Fail
Summary: 1 Stars

I loved this card the first month I had it. The price was great for a decent speed 32gb CF card. I've used Transcend cards in the past and never had any problems. I was impressed with the write speed in my Canon 7D and xsi. No more "busy" signals!

But then I started losing images when I imported them to Lightroom. At first it was one or two...then almost half. Then I started getting error messages both on my Mac and the camera about card readability. After formatting on the camera, it would work again for a couple of days, then start with the bad imports into Lightroom and readability issues again.

3 months later and the card is completely useless. I've never had so many problems with a memory card and I've definitely never had one fail completely on me. Obviously, by reading the other reviews, this is not an uncommon problem with this card. Definitely a waste of money. I'll spend a little more on my next card, which won't be Transcend.

Customer Review: Tons of memory at a wonderful price
Summary: 5 Stars

Bought this memory card because I recently upgraded my digital camera to a 40D and I am planning on getting a Canon 5D soon. Prior to this card I used 4GB and 8GB cards but I felt I should get something with more storage so I didn't have to carry around extra cards along with extra batteries.

With this card I have found I replace my batteries more then I need to change the memory card. I recently went to a Baseball game and took just over 1200 photographs I still had room on the card.

I really suggest everyone get the largest card they can afford to pick up especially if you are using the cards in a digital camera. This card works wonderfully in my Canon 40D all features work great including continuous shooting at high speeds. The write and read speeds are little slower then brand name ones however it isn't slow enough to pay double the price for one of the other brand name ones.
