Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Transcend 16 GB SDHC Class 6 Flash Memory Card with Card Reader TS16GSDHC6-S5WCustomer Review: Yes! Summary: 5 Stars
It's great for netbooks. Mine has a four gig (yes, four gigs!) solid state drive, but I knew I could add some storage space with an sd card and/or a usb flash drive. The netbook's ssd can easily be upgraded, too (no need to so far with this sd card inside). This card is four times the size of my ssd, and the great thing is that it can safely stay snapped into the netbook for as long as I want.
That's one drawback of a usb flash drive. It sticks out of the computer's body. This is okay sometimes, but if you want some extra memory that will fit snugly in a computer without the danger of accidentally bumping into it and breaking it, then consider this card. Oh, and you don't have to worry about remembering to bring it with you.
So many people have left usb flash drives in public computers..... it's a horrible thing. Little chance of getting it back unless you go back to the computer right away.
So I heartily recommend this 16 Gb card. As for the performance, it works fine. I've transferred documents and large video files without a problem. I've also played video files from the card. No problem there, either.
I've had it for about a month. I'll maybe update in a few months.
Customer Review: Transcending SanDisk Summary: 5 Stars
I use SanDisk Extreme III (Lumix FZ50) in my professional work, and Ultra II (Lumix TZ5) in my snapshots and most vacations. At the time, the 8 Gb was excellent, and could hold more pix than I would ordinarily take. Wanted to try a 16 Gb, and couldn't find an Extreme, though it was listed, so when I saw the Transcend, thought I'd try it. A friend had the 4 and 8 Gb, and liked them. So I bought, and so far, though it doesn't officially have the weather capabilities of the Extreme, I can't tell the difference in speed of r/w, and find no difference in pic quality. For significantly less money, for non-wilderness/severe weather use, the Transcend appears to be every bit as fast and as good as the SanDisk. The card reader it came with is not quite as nice as the SanDisk's, but so far (3 months of use) works just as well. The 16 has more capacity than I've been able to fill so far, but that just means I don't have to switch cards midstream, and can take marginal pix in addition to primaries, and edit what doesn't come out well. I will consider Transcend along with SanDisk in the future, and unless there is a clear technical advantage, will go with Transcend's lower price.
Customer Review: Died after 5 months of use Summary: 2 Stars
This card worked great for me with my Canon T1i for about 5 months, before it completely died. The failure came at a very unfortunate time and I lost a week's worth of Christmas / New Years vacation pictures and videos. I lost my son's very first Christmas video (like 20 minutes long).
First I noticed that my camera could not read a few of the photos. I had seen that before so I brushed if off and kept taking pictures. Big mistake, next time I powered my camera on, it would not recognize the flash card at all. I have tried everything to salvage any photos or videos, but this card is dead beyond recognition. I cannot even format the card using my camera or Windows.
We are very sad this happened. These pictures and videos were priceless to us. In hindsight I would have easily paid double to price for something reliable. Which is why I am replacing this card with Sandisk. I am never going for the best deal on flash memory again.
If you own this card please do not put all your eggs in one basket as I did, or you may suddenly find all your precious memories gone. Keep a spare SD card with you, and download your photos often.
Customer Review: Excellent value for memory expansion Summary: 5 Stars
I originally purchased an 8GB Kingston thumb drive to use with my new Dell Mini 9 Netbook. My husband confiscated it, so I went looking for more storage space. I've never used an SD card outside of a digital camera before, but since they seem to last so long in the cameras, I decided to try one in my pc. My netbook has a 16GB flash drive. With this little card in the SD slot, I've doubled my storage capacity! You don't even know it's in there, and there's no worrying about this thing sticking out of the side of your computer that you might hit or break off accidentally. Not only that, but it comes with a card reader so that you can use it with computers that don't have SD card slots, making it that much easier to transfer information and files from one machine to another-- and it's really fast. I tested it running video, audio and office files on it, and it works just as well as any other memory storage I've had. I'm very pleased with this package and will be buying more products like this from Transcend in the future.
Customer Review: Card does as it should...reader not a great fit Summary: 4 Stars
Like above, the card does what it should...stores video and pictures. Not much else to report that's out of the ordinary of what I wanted. I reformatted the chip and my Mac says i have 14.95 GB available. Keep in mind that you lose some storage space for the data swap space and chip information file system.
But also right off the bat...
The card reader makes my MacBook USELESS! I bought this because of my new Xacti camcorder with its own special USB plug that I would like to avoid losing while traveling and uploading. Getting this meant I could transfer anyone's card without having to lug around another needless cord that worked for only one specific item. Inter-changeability was the perk of this package. When I put the reader into the side of my computer, it BLOCKS the other USB port I would like to have used for the external drive to route all my video to. A MacBook only has two and I use both of 'em. Consider getting a USB extension cable that fits and doesn't block other ports if it's a problem, or a USB hub for that matter.
