Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of TDK DVD+RW 4x 4.7GB (25-Pack Spindle )Customer Review: Work pretty well in my particular environment Summary: 4 Stars
I typically use DVD Rewritable discs in my DVD recorders because they allow me to erase mistakes when I burn them, and more importantly, they seem to be more flexible when adding programs later, or making title changes, etc. I have occasionally had one that the DVD recorder refused to format, but did not try it in my computer, but may try that the next time it happens. That is why they get four stars instead of five. I cannot really testify as to how long they can be read once they are burned, but have looked at some maybe two years later with no issue on readability. I suspect that rewritable discs may not last as long as the write-only discs due to the nature of the dyes and substances used in the process of making them.
I have had a number of DVD recorders over the years, and found that in some cases they were much happier with one brand over another, possibly due to the dyes and substances used in their manufacture. I have one DVD recorder that absolutely refused to even recognize one brand of disc, which is not this brand. So it is clear that while these discs SHOULD be universally workable by all devices that write to them, the honest fact is that in many cases, some lasers in recorders work better with some discs than with others. So it is quite possible that if you have another brand of DVD recorder using another laser unit, you may have much worse results than I have had with these discs and my current Magnavox DVD recorders. So really the best thing to do is not buy a whole lot of them until you know they work fairly well in your particular device.
I have almost never had any problems with any DVDs once the unit successfully formatted it, for which I am thankful. If it formats completely and successfully, the DVD will nearly always work fine with that unit going forward. Rarely I've had a disc that could not be completely filled, and suspect it is a flaw in the disc that keeps it from being completely written. But all of us veterans of the magnetic media era know all too well the unpredictability of removable magnetic media, so it should not surprise us when a technology far more advanced has mass-produced media that sometimes is not perfect. I've thrown out a lot of diskettes in my day that were flawed, and they cost a lot more than DVDs did in most cases! So my point is that if you buy any mass-produced DVD media expecting 100% perfection, you are not living on planet earth! But if you have a failure rate of more than 3 to 5% then my guess is that media does not have the right dyes for the particular laser in your burner, and to try another brand.
Fortunately, once I've burned a DVD on my DVD recorders, I've never had any problems getting it to be readable on many friends machines or computers. And the nice thing about rewritable DVDs is that I never have to finalize them to get them to be read on other equipment--so far, at least.
My advice is to not buy 100 of any disc until you KNOW it will work with your burner or recorder by trying a handful as a sample batch. That way, if they don't work, you are not out a lot of cash, and may be able to use them in other equipment that is more compatible with their dyes used on the writable surface.
