Customer Review: Toasted my drive

Let me start this review by saying that I've been putting machines together since the days of CP/M and the S-100 bus, so I'm pretty sure that I know how to plug in a drive. The MOLEX power plug and the SATA connector are keyed so it would take a complete moron to connect them up incorrectly. I installed this power/data cable without shaving off any of the keys. The power and SATA connectors on this machine had been used previously so the wiring harness in the machine was not at fault. As soon as I powered on the machine I smelled the SMELL, the smell of an overheated circuit board and fried components.
I powered down the machine and looked for the scorch marks, took out the drive cage and the circuit board on the just installed drive was hotter than what I would consider normal. Switched the drive back the old cable, dead as a doornail. Removed the drive from the cage and I could feel no torgqu as one would normally feel from a rotating drive..
The only good thing about this is that the drive that was connected this cable was being wiped so that it coule be sent back to the manufacturer for reporting SMART (failed sector) errors. This drive had been working (booted and rebooted) and was working 15 minutes before being attached to this cable. Coincidence? I think not.
