Customer Review: Simple yet effective

If you like to take a lot of low-light shots or panoramas but hate lugging around a tripod, this little gadget just might do the trick. I compose a lot of outdoor low-lighting shots (using a Canon PowerShot S90 10MP Digital Camera with 3.8x Wide Angle Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 3-inch LCD and the Canon Digital Rebel XSi 12.2 MP Digital SLR Camera with EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Lens (Black)) - both cameras are adequate for handheld night shots but at the expense of a higher ISO. While I would love to bring my tripod everywhere, it sometimes really isn't feasible.
This gadget unfortunately seems like something you might see in an infomercial or possibly at the now-defunct Sharper Image or Brookstone. But apart from its ridiculously simple design and "gadgetness", this device actually serves its purpose well. Yes, some people around you might stare and wonder why in the world you have a wire running from your shoe to your camera but getting that perfect picture is all that matters right?
One gripe that I have is with the workmanship of this device. There is a small rectangular rubber piece that sits around the mounting screw that serves to cushion your camera/camcorder (you can kind of see it in the product photo on the top of this page). The glue they used to attach that rubber piece has the strength of Elmer's school glue - after about 10-20 uses of this device, you might find that the rubber piece has started to fall off. It's easy to re-glue but the manufacturer probably could have invested a couple more cents into a slightly higher grade glue to save us the trouble.
Since I have fairly large hands, I can easily support my camera and this steadepod device with one hand but if you have small hands, you might find this additional accessory a little bulky. Not a problem if you're only going to be using this for only a few shots but it is something to consider if you're buying this for someone who is purely used to a point-and-shoot size camera (the Canon S90 for example).
Pros: Does what it is designed to do, price isn't too bad (I bought this for about the same price at a retail electronics store).
Cons: Ugly, feels rather cheap, workmanship could be a little better. Can be awkward to hold.
Will this take the place of my tripod? No, but if you can't bring a tripod along, using this device is probably the second best option.
