Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Speck ToughSkin Rubberized Case with Belt Clip for 80/120/160 GB iPod classic 6G (Black)Customer Review: Great case with a few caveats Summary: 5 Stars
This case isn't perfect, but it's pretty darn close for someone like me; I've owned it for almost a year now, and I'm still really happy with it. I would give it a 4.5-star rating if I could.
Pros:
* It feels like it provides excellent protection; the screen is covered by hard plastic (it sits on the outside edges of the screen via a small rubber rim) and everything else is covered by thick rubber (except the buttons and ports, obviously). When I first put mine in, I had the urge to drop it on purpose because it felt so well-protected (I resisted, thankfully).
* If you're like me and you never need to take your iPod out of the case, it still fits snugly after many months of use. (This may also be true for people who take it out of the case on a regular basis, but it seems like stretching the rubber fairly often would probably lead to a poorer fit eventually.)
* I was afraid that using the rubber insert to fill out the case (which you have to do if you have a newer iPod) would lead to a lousy fit; it does not. In fact, I usually forget the insert is even in there.
* I was afraid that the Sony earbuds I use wouldn't fit the jack because they have a 90-degree plug on the end. To my surprise, they fit great.
* The case should fit, relatively easily, in man-pockets (see below for details on girl-pockets).
* The rubber material provides an excellent grip that makes it much harder to drop the iPod in the first place.
* The case I got isn't brown or navy-blue-ish like in the pictures; it's black. I like the way it looks and I don't understand why some sellers use product pictures that don't look like the products they're selling (especially when the actual color is better than the one in the pictures).
Cons:
* It is moderately difficult to take the case off and put it back on. If you plan on removing your case more than about once a week, I wouldn't recommend this one.
* If you plan on removing the attached belt clip or plugging the iPod into a dock more than about once a week, I wouldn't recommend this one (since both of these actions require removing the case).
* Since the rubber material is grippy, it makes it a little harder to quickly pull out of your pocket. However, this is only a slight annoyance and hasn't affected me much, despite the fact that I keep it in my pocket most of the time.
* The plastic screen protector will get a little scratched up, and little particles of lint and such will get on the underside of it. This is a little annoying because it makes the screen look a little worse than it would otherwise and it's harder to "clean" it than just wiping it off with your finger, but it's only really an issue while watching video, and it's just a minor issue then.
* The iPod becomes a little bulky with the case on. If you are male, it will probably fit in your pocket (as long as you're not wearing tight-fitting pants) without much difficulty. If you are a girl, it will probably not fit in your pockets. Thus, you should consider how you are going to carry it, whether it be in a bag/purse or with the included belt clip. (If you need a size estimate, imagine what it would be like to carry two iPods taped together.)
* Speaking of the belt clip, it adds more bulk to the already-moderately-bulky case, so don't expect to be able to easily carry it in your pocket with the belt clip attached.
Other things to consider:
* I found out quickly that the included belt clip was not for me, because there was no position I could put it in that wasn't awkward while sitting, and I didn't want to have to disconnect/reconnect it all the time (even though it comes with a quick-release mechanism). That said, it was a problem that I would've had with any belt clip and iPod Classic, not just this one. It may be worth it if you just need a way to hold the iPod while you're standing/walking/jogging. Also keep in mind that the belt clip prevents you from glancing down at the screen easily (since it faces outward from you and takes a few seconds to disconnect/reconnect).
* Thankfully, you can pull the circular piece of plastic that attaches to the belt clip out of the case (from the inside, when the iPod isn't in it). I chose to do this because it made the case less bulky.
In summary, a great case if your needs are similar to mine!
Customer Review: Super tough even if it's not beautiful Summary: 5 Stars
I waited a long time to review this produst because I don't think you can adequately review something like this the day you receive it. I've been using the Speck ToughSkin now for almost two years and this is one tough cookie. That's what I bought it to be and that's what I got.
If you are looking for an iPod cover that's cool or classy and sleek this is probably not for you. It's a bit chunky and heavy although not as much as you might think. I was looking for a case that would really protect my iPod from all kinds of bumps, yanks and possible drops and this case has done that and more.
I started with one of the older iPod videos in it and traveled all over Europe with that in my purse and coat pocket, through airports and train stations. It got dropped, pummeled, rained on and everything you can imagine. When I bought a new Classic, I passed my old Video and this case to my husband who abused it even more, not only traveling with it but carrying it out on jobsites with him. That original almost 3 year old iPod is still going strong and I credit that to this case.
I am using one of the leather cases on my Classic now and I don't feel secure about it at all. I am ordering a new Speck ToughSkin today because I wouldn't think of taking the one off my husband's. He would destroy it within a week's time.
Now for a few of the drawbacks.
1. It is rubber and it tends to attract dust. A microfiber cloth solves that and since I don't wear it as an accessory it doesn't bother me.
2. It was a bit hard to get the iPod in the first time but after that it's no problem. It is a bit bulky if you have the smaller gig pod and have to use the filler plate behind but you don't notice it after a day or so.
3. I read on here that someone was afraid the top of the rubber would stretch out and get loose over the screen protector. Don't worry. It doesn't. And the screen protector is also tough as nails. It doesn't have a click wheel protector but I bought a little pack of protectors and cut one to fit. Problem solved.
I've had no trouble with the placement of the holes for headphones, dock/charger, etc. and I was worried at first about the clip sticking out as far as it does but I have ended up liking that because it's easy to open but once you clip it on something, boy does it stay. The clip will also come off completely if you want it to. You must press a special button and turn it upside down to do that so it can't happen accidentally.
If you are looking for a case to protect your iPod and make it easy to use, this is a good choice. If you want a fashion accessory you should probably keep searching. Good Luck!!
Customer Review: One of the best cases I have used for the Ipod Classic - Extreme protection! Summary: 5 Stars
I have the newest Ipod Classic (120 Gb/Sixth Generation) ... the newest one, at the time of this writing. Fits just fine. The case works great, and in my opinion, is perfect if you want good protection from shocks and are very active. The screen protector that comes with it is also great. This unit has saved my ipod from drops many times. Haven't really used the belt clip. Another commenter mentioned that they were unhappy with the belt clip and that this is not a good case to be using for workouts. My question to them: Why, in this day and age, would use a hard drive based player for workouts when flash players, besides the IPOD nano (or if you like the NANO), are fairly cheap. I can't say that I use this to work out. Too big. I use it for more for car, home, party, stero, and general use. I've dropped it many times than I would have liked to and the case excels in protecting it. I really like the fact that I have strong rubber protecting the case, along with a good, hard, plastic screen protector that fits pretty well over the case, without moving around.
Now here are some bad things, though minor.
Dust can sometimes get inside. It might be needed to taken out the case, and cleaned every once in a while. I usually clean it out every 2 or 3 months. If you don't mind a little dust, you can probably wait a little bit longer.
At the top of the case, near where the top portion of the screen protector meets the rubber, some may find that this is not as tight as they like, as some have mentioned in their reviews. This is true; it is slightly loose, but it hardly makes things move around or anything, and the Ipod, along with the screen protector DO NOT move and are still snug in my experience. A very minor point.
Also, it can be somewhat difficult to take out and put back in.
Overall, the cons are small, and I would recommend this case to anybody. This has extreme protection. I would also recommend the nano versions of these cases as well. They are very strong and offer great protection.
Speck ToughSkin Rubberized Case for iPod nano 3G (Clear)
I have used the above case for my NANO 3G, and it offers the same great protection as this case.
Five stars for both. In general, Speck makes some pretty good cases for music players in my opinion. I am still waiting for them to come out with a ToughSkin for the newest Ipod Nanon (4th Gen.).
From plastic to rubber to even metal, I've used many cases over the years. This is one of the best. For extreme protection for your Ipod Classic, don't wait; get this.
Customer Review: Protects from dropping, not from dust and dirt. Summary: 3 Stars
Since I use my iPod mostly during outside chores and on the garden tractor, I wanted tough protection, but dust still gets inside the case, especially affecting the open connector site. I was disappointed to discover that inserting the iPod into the case means stretching the upper lip of the case, which means once it's in the case, you're not inclined to take it out, but you really need to for cleaning if you're using it in very dusty situations. The lip on my case stretched enough at first insertion to look a bit messy.
Another disappointment is that the belt clip is very bulky and doesn't open very far so although it would work fine for a belt, if I wore one, it doesn't easily attach to other clothing. Fortunately, my fleece vest has a suitable pocket, but the thick clip and rubber texture of the case make sliding it into the pocket difficult. I do like the added protection the heavy case affords and the clip easily detaches so I'll use it without the clip--for a while anyway.
Since the iPod doesn't come in and out of the case easily, I can see why they make the cable connection slot open, but I'd really rather have that covered during my outdoor activities so it, too, is protected. I'll continue to look for a case that better meets my particular needs.
I can, however, see the value of this case in situations where rough treatment is likely and where it's not excessively dusty. A real advantage is that the rubber case keeps the unit from being slippery to hold if your hands are wet or sweaty and makes it less likely to slip off a stack of whatever to the floor. It's probably the perfect case for some users. The iPod screen is clearly visible through the screen protector and the dial is completely accessible, plus having no fold over cover makes it easier to use one-handed.
Customer Review: Will Fit 7th Generation iPod Classic 160GB Summary: 5 Stars
Another reviewer brings up a very good point. "The rubber at the top of the screen is very thin and flexible, and it very easily pulls away from the screen protector. I would think there should be a larger lip on screen protector to keep the rubber in place." I would totally agree that the screen protector provided could be bigger and is not very good, but thankfully there is another option. There is a full length clear piece of plastic inside the case that has tabs sticking out the top and bottom. The tabs hold the case squarely in the display box during shipping. When you unpack the case save this piece of plastic. All you have to do is cut off the top tab and trim the bottom to fit over the screen area. Make sure to leave extra overlap so the edges of the case around the screen have the extra grip. There is also a cardboard insert (actual iPod size) that works very well as a template.
I purchased this for the 7th generation iPod Classic 160GB not knowing there was a difference in size between the 6th and 7th gen's. Turns out it wasn't a problem as I was able to use the rubber spacer (intended to accommodate the 80GB model and included with the product) and everything fit like a well tailored glove. I love Speck ToughSkin Rubberized Cases because they make the most hard core protection you could possibly obtain for your treasured gadget. I had an older MP3 player take a four foot drop, bouncing a bit on impact, while protected by one of these cases with absolutely no damage to the player whatsoever. You can trust you are doing the right thing when purchasing this product. For those of you who read every review before making your decision I SOLUTE YOU!
