Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of iHome iHM7 Rechargeable Mini Speaker for iPod (Black)Customer Review: Small in price and size, not in sound or quality. Summary: 5 Stars
Giving 5 stars because nothing can be perfect, but this thing sure is close.
Pros:
-Sound is amazing. Been using it outdoors while playing disc golf and plan to use for snowboard season. I was worried that the sound may not travel far or cut though heavy outdoor ambient sound, but it does. Well enough in fact that when my GF is carrying the bag the speaker is playing in 200 feet away, I can still hear the music. I took it with me when we went wake boarding on our 270HP Yamaha jet boat, the boat engines only drown out the speaker when at full throttle. If you need something to compare the sound to its about the equivalent of a nice pair of $20 amplified desktop speakers.
-Thing is freggin TINY. even when poped out will fit easy into a pocket, it was so small i decided to make a metal frame housing for it so it wouldn't get damaged by throwing around my bag i keep it in.
-price is something i would expect to pay for a pair of mediocre headphones.
cons:
-Yes the usb port is too close to the speaker port, i suggest buying a usb extender if you're that concerned on length. since the usb port is dangling while the speaker port is plugged in I'm worried about it snagging on something and breaking the wire, which is too thin for my taste but most speaker wires are that way.
-static noise is present when speaker is playing, plugged in, and fully charged. Its kind of nice to know that its done charging, but having to unplug it from the usb to get rid of the noise is kind of annoying after several times. This could also be a good thing if you look at it from the stand point of if you leave your battery driven device plugged in and on over a long period of time it begins to degrade your battery. For rechargeable batteries its actually better to fully drain and charge them every time.
I get about 1-2 hours of solid play time at max volume, Ive had it playing for 5+ hours on low volume. If your going to be using this as a travel around speaker, which is the best use for this kind of item, i suggest buying a Emergency Battery Charger w/Flashlight For iPhone 3G 3GS and any devices that are charged through a USB cable! and some rechargeable AA's. IMO energizer 2500 MAH are the best. i can charge this thing up about 3-5 times using that setup while on the go, keeping the music playing ALL DAY LONG. Also for the people complaining about the speaker not fulling opening, its on a metal coil spring, that has been compressed for months and months in the package, of course its not going to open completely. Put something to wedge the speaker open tall for a while, it will then stay at around where the picture is, mine does. It does give it better sound as well.
Rock on fellas.
