Customer Review: Great idea, but poor follow-through

The iHome iH5 Clock Radio is a great concept and boasts some good features, but has two very important downfalls:
One, the display is way too bright, even when set on the lowest level. It has an "indiglo" luminescent background displaying the time, etc. in black characters. I don't know why, but it is disturbing to sleep with. I had to cover it up at night, which defeats the purpose of a clock in your bedroom.
Two, the volume of the iPod and radio alarm settings is too loud. It claims to "lull you out of sleep" by increasing the volume "gradually", but by that they mean from 0 to 60 in 5 seconds, and there is no discernable way to adjust the setting. Needless to say, it is not fun to wake up to, even if it is your favorite song.
Anyway, I should have just bought a speaker cradle for my iPod, because I went back to the 15-year-old clock/radio my grandmother gave me when I was 14.

For a little station it can get pretty loud! I really like the way I can wake up to my favorite iPod playlist. The station also charges your iPod while it plays so I think thats great.
However there are a few drawbacks. (I still LOVE my iHome despite these drawbacks but it may effect some) When it first comes out of the box it smells really bad, like industrial plastic. After a few days its gone but I couldn't sleep with it! There is also no "lights-off" feature for the clock. It is a little too bright for me to sleep with so I have to put something over it to be able to sleep. Also, you cannot control your iPod through the station, you have to pick your song on your iPod but you can do so while the iPod is still docked so it really isn't that big of a deal.
I would still STRONGLY recommend this product! It made all of my roommates MAD jealous! :)

I bought this as an alarm clock first and an iPod speaker second. I used to have an old alarm clock given by my aunt, one of those that you can buy at a flea market, and is very annoying in waking you up. I was RELIEVED to have this as an alarm clock cuz I can use my nice collection of MP3's to wake me up.
I've read the other comments and I do agree with most of them but as long as it WORKS as far as waking me up, I will recommend it. Now, as a speaker for iPod, I will have to say it is average. I can always hook-up my iPod to my Logitech 5500 if I want superior sounds.
The black color matches my black 5th generation iPod. I don't like the selection/turn wheel so i devised and put black velcro on top of it so it is easy to use.
So this product is recommended for those who would want to integrate their iPod with an alarm clock.

i'm very pleased with this product. i like that the ihome ih5 is offered in white or black so that it can match either of the basic ipod colors. also, i think the fact that all ipod models are compatible with it is a great feature. the sound quality is quite good for it's size - definately much better than i expected. this is a nice option if you already have a surround sound system and just want something nice and convenient to listen to your ipod with. i have to agree with others that the battery option and the ipod/radio/beep options are really nice. i have really enjoyed waking up to music i enjoy rather than annoying talk show hosts. in contrast to others, however, the display lights have not bothered me a bit. mine did not come with a remote, but i was able to purchase a matching black one from the ihome website. the shipping on the remote was free.Customer Review: This product ROCKS!

One of the best purchases I have ever made. A snap to setup. I like being able to listen to my music and audio books while I drift off to sleep. I don't know what people are talking about when they say the display is too bright. On the lowest setting it is not bright at all. I am also thrilled that my ipod is always charged. The sound is great too!
EDIT: I have to admit, after using the clock for about a week, that gradual wakeup deal is totally bogus. I can't believe they even advertise a gradual wakeup option. What others have said about it is true, it is not at all gradual.
On the dimmer, it sounds like maybe on the first generation of this clock radio you could not get the light very dim. They must have fixed this problem because I can get it very dim, just by pressing the snooze/dimmer button twice.
