Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Sling Media Slingbox AV (SB240-100)

Customer Review: Slingbox - nice little device, but below marketing-driven expectations
Summary: 4 Stars

This is a very easy way to accomplish what we all need to do sometimes - to shift your TV someplace else: a computer, a phone, etc.

Slingbox would have easily earned 5 stars but they delayed the "public beta" launch of their Palm client for way too long. In plain fact most of their development cycles don't keep up with their marketing, which is over the top with promises they can't deliver.

...even the Windows client crashes a lot over a reliable wireless G connection.

This aside, you will like what it CAN do, sometimes you will love it - especially if you lower your expectations from the hype.

Customer Review: Remote Cable TV Viewing
Summary: 5 Stars

I unpacked it, hooked it up, and it worked perfectly. I haven't experimented yet with hooking it up to different hardware (only hooked up to cable box...not yet to VCR/DVD/etc.). I was very pleasantly surprised when I was at a remote location that I really could do all of the things as if I were there at home: view the guide, change the channel, control the DVR, etc. The DVR was the big bonus. A few "techie" notes: I'm running Vista, and it works fine. Video stream is about 400 kbps, and CPU useage is actually pretty low (I can use Skype simultaneously with no noticeable audio degratation--Skype is a bit of a CPU hog).

Customer Review: Amazing product
Summary: 5 Stars

When the slingboxes first came out I spent quite a bit of time trying to figure out how this thing works. At first I thought it would be some piece of junk that had a hidden flaw or catch. After all the raving reviews and ratings I saw for the sling I finally dove in. I can't tell you how unbelievably easy it was to set up and use it remotely. High quality software and hardware. My only complaint is the video compression/quality could be better. It's a little hard to watch football remotely @ 420 kbps although do able. If you watch football within the LAN (1000-2000kbps) then it looks fine. Definitely a good buy!

Customer Review: Be careful-Mac OS X
Summary: 4 Stars

I waited and waited and waited for Mac OS to be released by Slingbox. This company is long on promise but doesn't understand that words are supposed to mean something. Finally, they release a version for Mac OS 10 and I bought one on Amazon, com. It turns out that it was for Tiger only and I had OS10,3,9 not 10.4 required. So I had to pop for Tiger, which is in itself very nice, but I'm still bitter at Slings "communication" or lack there of. The product itself is awesome. I am stunned that something like this exists. After my trials and tribulations with an inept marketing plan, I must say I love my Slingbox.

Customer Review: Bought as a present...
Summary: 3 Stars

This seems like a great product so we bought it for my brother as a Christmas gift. We finally impressed my brother with the gift (great gift giver and technofile) but we had to return Slingbox b/c he has TiVo and a Mac. Therefore he has all the capabilities w/this set-up as he would w/the Slingbox. My brother said Slingbox is great but it was something he didn't need b/c he was already able to do everything w/his TiVo-Mac combo that the Slingbox is designed to do. If you don't have the same set-up my brother does then we totally recommend the Slingbox. It's a shame we were not able to use it.
