Customer Review: Excellent portable scope plus a really cool mount

Overall I am very happy with this scope. I believe that this scope is manufactured by Synta. This is the same company that manufactures scopes for Orion as well as Celestron. In fact, I believe this is the same tube as the Orion Apex Mak 90 with a different paint job. The build quality is very high for a budget scope. As far as what you can see with it, this is not a 10" dobsonian, and you shouldn't expect it to be. So, if you want to spend a lot of time looking at the faint fuzzies, then you should get a larger aperture telescope. However, it is great for the moon and planets, and with a full aperture solar filter, it would make a quick and easy solar scope. Also the image through the included diagonal is erect, so this makes a great spotting scope as well for terrestrial use.
In addition to the robotic mount included, the scope can also be directly mounted on a regular tripod. To put the mount itself on a tripod, you will need a tripod with a 3/8 attachment (not 1/4) or get an adapter. The robotic mount is the same as the Orion teletrack without goto. This mount has also been marketed as the "Merlin" and "Acuter" by various companies. There is a large photography following for this mount for use in automatic panorama pictures and gigapans. Look it up on youtube or go to [...]and look for posts about the merlin mount. Interestingly, software has been written to allow the remote control of this mount and a camera from a computer or PDA through bluetooth or a special cable. This mount also comes with an l-bracket to mount a camera as well as a shutter release cable.
The only reason I gave this four stars instead of five is that the included eyepieces leave a lot to be desired. The 25mm is ok, but the other two are fairly cheap. You will probably want different ones for higher magnifications.
