Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Skullcandy SC-SBP3.5 Smokin Bud (Pink)Customer Review: Good value earbud--watch out for volume switch Summary: 5 Stars
*EDIT* see end of review
I often see people about the city wearing the ubiquitous and instantly recognizable white iPod earbuds. Frankly, "why?" is what I think. I've tried wearing those things. They don't stay in. They're uncomfortable, to the point of sore redness if you try to mash em in. And as if those weren't dealbreakers, the sound quality out of those things suck!
If you think that you are just fine with normal iPod earphones, you're either wrong or you're deaf.
I picked up these earbuds after being satisfied with the previous generation of the same type.
Pros:
* The white/pink color combo works well with my attire, and isn't just BOB -- boring ol' black.
* The earbuds have "stems" coming out of them. Other earbuds from this company have the tiny cord going straight into the little speakers. Having "stems" helps prevent yank-damage of the cords. (admittedly, the iPod earbud stems are sturdier)
* The sound quality is good. Not fantastic when it comes to bass range, though. More on that, later.
* These earbuds are DAMN comfortable. With the default silicone "stubs" I just gently nuzzle them into my ears and forget about them. If that's not enough, they include the "stubs" in various sizes.
* Noise cancellation, consequently, is superb. These earbuds essentially double as earplugs.
Cons:
* IF you're expecting a fantastic bass response at high volumes you might be a little disappointed. Generally speaking though, you'll have to look for pricier earbuds to provide better performance in that department.
* These earbuds tout a built-in volume switch. It's basically an analog volume slider that slides from 'Min' to 'Max' on an intermediate dongle in the cord. Unfortunately when my earbuds arrived I didn't see the switch, and it was on 'Min' so I thought they were WAY too quiet and even called for a possible refund/return. Eventually I found the switch, and that corrected things. Design-wise though, things could use some improvement here. The dongle should be either near the plug-in end or closer to the split at the cord for the earbuds. As it stands, it's pretty close to the middle of the cord. When I'm out and about, I like to stuff my cord underneath a shirt layer, so this volume switch is usually completely covered by a shirt where I can't get to it. This whole idea could be improved by changing the placement and changing it into a spring-loaded mute switch. Volume control should be left to the player itself.
*The material that the "stubs" is made out of tends to build up ear wax deposits. Yuck.
Overall though, I could easily recommend this product.
*Edit: I redact that. One of the buds crapped out on me roughly 1.5 months after use. Product deserves 2 stars. Not five.
