When the Apple earbuds that came with my iPod Touch shorted out I went looking for some new ones and settled on a pair of Sennheiser CX 400 In-Ear Headphones and because they were so inexpensive, I guess I fooled myself and didn't notice they weren't as good. For months I thought I was getting good sound when I went running in the morning or when I wanted to blank out the world.
Then I bought a pair of Skull Candy INK'D Earbuds at a garage sale for a quarter. They were missing one of the earbud covers, but a friend had extras so I was in business and was I ever amazed at how much better these were than the Sennheiser guys.
So the budget earbuds were better than the very expensive ones. Now I knew I was missing something, no more fooling myself. I took a trip to my local stereo store and did some listening and at lot less money than the Sennhiesers I found the Sony MDR-EX51LP Fontopia In-The-Ear Headphones. These were plenty, plenty good, great even and I was in earbud heaven, great sound.
Then a year later, about a month ago, I got a chance to review the Ultimate Ears MetroFi 220 Noise Isolating Earphones, made by Logitech and was I ever blown out of the water. They are better than I ever could have imagined. Better than what I'd thought was the best of the best.
So below I've written a bit about each of these earbuds. I know I'm only an amateur listener, I've proved that by been fooled by the high price of the Sennheiser earbuds. But I think my opinion might help someone make a purchase. I tested all of these earbuds with Bob Dylan's song "Tangled Up in Blue" from his excellent Blood on the Tracks album.
Ultimate Ears MetroFi 220 Noise Isolating Earphones, by Logitech, ASTONISHING, simply astonishing. The guitar work is front and center, seems to be floating right below Dylan's voice, which is crisp as early morning frost. The bass bounces through your ears with a booming clarity like I've never heard in a headset. Logitech have done an amazing job with these, just amazing.
Sony MDR-EX51LP Fontopia In-The-Ear Headphones. BRILLIANT. Bright treble, booming base, midrange wonderful. Snares are sharp, guitar work comes right on through. At half the price of the Ultimate Ears above these are a good buy, as they are almost as good. Sony have done a brill job with these.
Skull Candy INK'D Earbuds. PRETTY GOOD and They're Pink. Plenty of treble with these guys, the bass on the low end seems just fine, but midrange seems a bit weak when played loud. Played with normal (not loud volume) these are wonderful headphone, but when played loud you can tell these are budget earbuds, still they are a good deal for the money and way, way better then the expensive Sennheiser guys below and they come in at a fraction of the price.
Sennheiser CX 400 In-Ear Headphones. LOUSY. Muddy Base, where's the treble, it's muddy too. These were the most expensive of the four. That excellent guitar work on this song is almost absent, it's eerie. Again, muddy bass, fuzzy too. Extremely disappointed with these and they cost so much money. Sennheiser is a good brand, but they for sure missed the boat with these. They don't even come close to the inexpensive Skull Candy guys.
There you have it, my little review of four different earbuds. I know there are a lot of others out there, but hopefully I've helped someone in making a choice as some of these cost a lot of money.
