Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Skullcandy S5LWBZ-BB Lowrider Headphone, (Black/Black)Customer Review: Frail construction, ok sound quality Summary: 4 Stars
I've been using these for about two weeks now and have logged about 15 hours of listening time on a 1st gen iPod and an older Carver home pre-amp. These headphones are light and fairly comfortable to wear for hours at a time. They fold into a fairly compact package although they are a bit awkward to fold. They feel very flimsy and the plastic construction does not exude quality or durability. Time will tell on how long they last. I feel like I need to be careful when handling them and folding them. The cord is lightweight and a good length (about 3 feet...I hate those 6 foot cords). The plug is a vertical design which doesn't seem to fair as well as the horizontal plugs. Another feature which may fail. These come with a "lifetime warranty" but I don't know how well it's honored. As for the sound...for this price range I would say it's pretty good. The mid-range is definitely a little muddled and not as clear as it should be but the highs and lows reproduce nicely. If these were in the $100 range then it would be unacceptable in my opinion. But if you want excellent sound, then spend more money. Overall, I am satisfied with this purchase but the durability issue holds me back from giving it four stars. I'll update this review in 6 months to let you know how well they hold up.
UPDATE 1/29/10: Surprisingly, these headphones are still working fine for me. I'm pretty careful with them and do baby them (not sure why since they aren't that expensive). One thing I find annoying is that when they are folded up, it's not easy to get the cord wrapped around the unit and have it stay in place. Not a big deal...just a minor annoyance...maybe there's a special headphone cord "knot" I could learn. In any event, these are holding up...but in an environment where things last a long time (I'm still using a 1st gen iPod, my Nikon F4 is from the mid 80's, my TV is a 1985 RCA, and I still have socks I wore in high school).
UPDATE 10/9/10: Well, I've upgraded this product from 3 stars to 4 stars. They are a lot more durable than I originally anticipated. I've been very satisfied with this purchase.
UPDATE 4/9/11: Still going strong!
