Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of SimpleTech by Hitachi SimpleDrive 500 GB USB 2.0 External Hard Drive SP-U35/500 (designed by Pininfarina)Customer Review: Worked OK then died totally Summary: 1 Stars
I've had this drive for a year and a half. It was easy to hook up and use. However, I noticed that from time to time my computer wouldn't detect it. I would do a restart and it would start working again. Over the past couple of weeks I noticed backup failures but I blamed it on the computer, my bad, I know now it was the drive. Yesterday I went to check files on it and the computer didn't show the drive. I tried a restart of the drive, I could hear the drive try to work but it never was detected by my computer. I switched computers and the other computer didn't detect its presence. This was my backup drive, needless to say I'm not happy. I'm definitely going to have to find another method for backup.
Customer Review: Best external hard drive I have owned - at a great price Summary: 5 Stars
After reading plenty of positive reviews on Amazon I purchased this drive for extra media storage and backup purposes. I previously owned a Seagate 250gb external hard drive. I did not have any major problems with it, but it was large, ugly, loud, slow at times, and could not be detected on Ubuntu Linux. I purchased the Simpletech Simpledrive and I have been using it for about 4 months now without a single problem. It was easily detected on every operating system I used it with (Windows XP, Mac OSX 10.4, Ubuntu Linux). It is quick, quiet, small, sleek, and lights up on the top when in use. What else can you ask for? Simpletech provides the best bang for the buck on external hard drives.
Customer Review: This is not the HD for you Summary: 1 Stars
Dear Users,
I have had this drive for over a year now and it worked fine (notice the word, 'worked'). Now last week I noticed that it was not coming on and allowing me to access my precious data I had so laboriously put on.
I have tried just about everything except the electric shock treatment which I believe is not for HDs.
Pros
It has a nice color and space.
Cons
It will leave you crying after not allowing to access your data no matter what you do.
Ps After checking the site for drivers I really realized how much I need to apply the electric shock treatment because the site is useless.
Customer Review: It dies after 3 months. Summary: 1 Stars
Add me to the list - the external drive I purchased died 3 months after purchase. Same as all the other reviewers - the computer will no longer recognize the device.
It seems the USB to SATA circuitry is what dies - the hard drive itself may be okay for most people. Mine has a Western Digital WD5000AAVS inside (you won't find a lot of info about this exact model online) and works fine connected to a PC.
For all reviewers who are finding their device no longer functions and don't wish to deal with SimpleTech tech (non)support, find someone to pull the drive out of the enclosure and connect it directly to your PC to retrieve your data.
Customer Review: Good Product Summary: 3 Stars
Its a good product. Very fast and queit. I backed up my entire hard drive to simple tech and it only took up 20% of the drive.
The Only problem is that one touch back up botton. It will downsload every thing including cookies from the internet store on your computer. It will not organize your hard drive. Every thing is just place in one folder. That is a mess! And you cant access that info unless download everything back on your PC.
But if you just click, drag and drop, there will be no problem. and Access is easy, Just click and open.
Overall I like it.. no problems yet. I had it for 4 months now.
