Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of SimpleTech by Hitachi SimpleDrive 500 GB USB 2.0 External Hard Drive SP-U35/500 (designed by Pininfarina)Customer Review: Don't buy this CRAP Summary: 1 StarsBought this in April and it lasted till June, 2 months, 20% capacity used, and it dies on me...worst purchase to date!
DON"T BUY THIS CRAP!
Customer Review: The bane of my existence Summary: 1 StarsThis piece of garbage has been torturing me for about one year.
It is RARELY recognized by my computer, it freezes up my OS, and it has probably removed DAYS from my lifespan in terms of stress-damage.
THIS IS A PIECE OF GARBAGE, and you should trust the intelligent NEGATIVE reviews and DO NOT PURCHASE.
I am currently wrestling with it, trying to move everything from it (the piece of garbage) to an iomega hard drive.
If and when I successfully remove the files from this hard drive without suffering any losses, I would really love to deliver this to the home of "simpletech"'s CEO with a coating of something that smells exactly like what this is: a piece of CRAP.
Customer Review: Very quirky Summary: 3 StarsI have the black 1TB model I got on sale from fry's. I love the way it looked, nice and sleek unobtrusive etc etc. It's been working fine but recently i've run into a couple problems, one more and i'm going to cut my loses.
I use the drive mostly for backing up my movies. I buy a DVD put it on the drive and play it through my PS3 in my living room. I noticed one time that the movie wouldn't play i finally figured out it was the drive and not the file. So I power cycled the drive and still nothing, i was getting a file not valid error. I left it off overnight cut it back on the next day and it seemed to be fine. A few weeks later it did it again but this time i got an error that said "Unable to recover disk, you will have limited access, backup information and reformat as soon as possible"
I had a mini panic attack but cut it off and slept and the next morning it was back and seemed to be fine again. So now i've been cutting the drive off every night and back on in the morning and it seems to be fine but it's still pretty scary.
Anyway other than that it's been a great drive when it's working and it's not a huge brick sitting on your desk like most TB drives.
Customer Review: It workes very well for a few months and then died!! Summary: 1 StarsI used the drive to backup all of my important files and family photos and videos. The drive worked very well for a few months and then all of a sudden decided to stop working.
I only powered it on when I needed to do backups and restores so it is not like it could have overheated. I am not sure what happened.
Customer Review: Unstable for 3 months, then died Summary: 1 StarsI bought a 500GB version of this drive. I installed it on a Windows 2000 server, and it worked immediately. Then I would get these strange little errors, when accessing files across the network, about files being corrupt. But the files would open just fine and gave no indication of corruption. Then one day I restarted my computer and the OS started a disk scan. After the OS loaded, there was drive letter, but it errored out any time I tried to access it. I was mortified. I tried cracking the case open and checking the wiring (thus voiding my warranty) to try and get my data, but to no avail. SimpleTech tech support was pretty much useless. They said that I'd need a 3rd party to recover my data. I found this really cheap and WONDERFUL software called Zero Assumption Software that helped me retrieve my data. I was so, so relieved. It took about 30 hours to scan the drive and recover the files, but it did it successfully. I won't be buying this brand again, and I'd encourage you to do the same.
