Customer Review: Excellent well worth the money (as are the Etymotic E4p)
Summary: 5 Stars

I have been using audiophile In Ear Monitors such as these for 5 years (or whenever Apple started making the IPod). I started with the Etymotic E6s, E6Ss then 2 years ago the E4Ps, recently I purchased these Shures and have been extremely pleased with them. Sound wise they are slightly (not much) better that the E4Ps, the bass is more extended and the mids more fluid. Both capture detail you most certainly won't hear with the standard 'phones given with MP3 players, and that's not just Apple!

Though I use my Shures pretty much everyday, my backup pair is the Etymotics E4Ps. I, surprisingly, use the Etymotic flanges on the Shures, which I can't get into my ears with the same penetration. I don't use the sponge as I once had the spong left in my ear when I removed the headphones! Noise reduction is definitely superior in the Etymotics than the Shures however far in a put then, this is not so important for general day to day usage, but when I'm doing long flight, I definitely prefer the Etymotics.
When I have inserted either headphones, all you can see from the front is the wire! (I sometimes get strange looks from people!)

I do use them when I am inline skating, and only notice the microphonic noise between songs; I don't listen to quiet music when i'm skating, however, I only have the volume about 2/3rds up. I've only been able to listen to solo piano music with the volume full up!

To Sum up: Given that market price is generally similar, my recommendation is generally for the Shures, but for those who fly alot I would recommend trying a pair of Etymotic E4Ps. If you have no problem getting them in your ears, you shouldn't be disappointed with either.

Customer Review: Absolutely Brilliant!!!

I've gone back and re-ripped all of my songs at 192kps to take full advantage of what these earphones have to offer. I'm going to qualify my post by saying that I listen almost exclusively to an iRiver Clix. Which player you have is IMPORTANT. They each have a unique sound built in. My player has a graphic equalizer, so I am not stuck with factory presets. I'll tell you a little about my odyssey. I bought a Clix and a U10 in December. I am a person of small stature and have very small ear canals, so the earphones that came with the Clix just simply did not fit. So I bought the Sennheiser CX300's. After a day, I noticed that I could not hear the mid or high ranges. I went to Cnet reviews and realized that the V-Moda Bass Frequencies were an editor's choice. They were an improvement over the Sennheiser's, but like the Cnet editors said, They are for bass craving listeners, mostly those who own SanDisks' and Creative products because they do not have equalizers. Since I could boost the bass on my player, I really did not need added bass. What I found out is that I am an audiophile. I want balanced, rich sound from my earphones. I first bought the Shure E2cs and then finally the E4gs. I bought the E4gs instead of the 4cs, because they are essentially the same earphones, but the 4g cord is shorter, and I am a short person. The sound is brilliant--beautiful tenor saxes and lead guitars. Excellent, deep bass. The music I listen to ranges from 1930's blues, 40's-50's rock on up and down the spectrum. Do not expect them to be as bassy as the Sennheiser's or V-Moda's. Those earphones emphasize bass. The emphasis of these headphones is BALANCED sound. Also, Shure's earphones typically requires a 20 hour break-in.

Customer Review: A great choice

I am a fanatic of quality sound. I`ve been searching for a long time till i get the excellent sound in my ears. The first step was finding a good mp3 player and finally found the answer in Sony nw a808. Then, once i got the player i needed the best earphones. Long was the travel my friends till i reached the shore. I explored many brands including a copule of sony earphones, sony ex style that came with the player, phillips, and senheisser cx 300. Finally i read several web reviews of this tiny earbuds , fantastic every of them, listing this earphones always between the best five you can buy. So i decided it worth a try and i bought them. Believe me when i say they are simply awesome. Well balanced sound spectrum, well defined trebles and bass, guitars play perfect and tambours too. You can hear sounds you didn`t know they were there. For those who are fanatic of more thann powerful bass i suggest they try to find another who play them that way- senheisser do that- but in my personal opinion if you want a perfect clarity of every sound and instruments you need these earphones, because an excesive bass may provoque a losing of quality of sound as i tested on previous earphones. I gave them a five cause they are the best i tested so far. I guess the e5 may be better-twice the money- but for the price i believe you won`t get anything better than these earphones. The delivery service was excellent , it arrived before the estimated date. No complains only thanks.P.S. They are no more E4, shure now names them SCL4.

Customer Review: The best earphones I've ever owned!
Summary: 5 Stars

I purchased the E4c to replace my Shure E2c. Although my E2c were only a couple of weeks old, and I loved them, I couldn't resist the great price offered on the E4c.

These earphones are phenomenal. They are a definite improvement over the E2c. The best way I can describe the sound is being full and complete. You will hear things you never heard before on inferior earphones: crystal highs, natural mids, and solid bass. Yes bass!

Those who say these offer no bass are inserting them incorrectly. I recommend using the tutorial on Shure's website. You need to create a TIGHT seal. Simply inserting them into your ears is not sufficient. I originally thought the E2c had no bass. It was only after trying all available fitment options did I finally discover the bass. I use the triple flange. While they are a bit tricky to insert correctly, once in, they give me the best seal. I find the universal fit foam a bit too small.

These earphones do a good job at canceling outside noise. While I can still hear outside noise when no music is playing, the outside noise is subdued enough to allow you to listen to music at a reduced volume. In the long run, your ears will thank you. This alone is worth the high price.

My co-workers think I'm crazy for spending as much on earphones as I did on my Mp3 player (Sony HD-NW3). I see it as getting all the sound for which I paid.

By far, the best earphones I've ever owned!

Customer Review: Great Product
Summary: 5 Stars

I travel frequently on business and one of the most annoying things during travel is noise. People, planes, traffic, airports, train stations, paging systems, etc. are all noisy things that combine to make travel most unpleasant. I have always wanted a set of high end phones for my mp3 player to use for travel so I can block out the noise but size and weight have always been a consideration. I happened upon a recent Forbes article touting the E4c's as the solution. In combination with the extraordinary ipod nano, the E4c earphones are perfect for the business traveler.

The Shure E4c Sound Isolating Earphones are fantastic and live up to the hype. While full noise cancellation is only possible with big, bulky headphones, the E4c's do a great job as they fit nice and snug in the ear. They provide excellent fidelity and blow away the myriad headphones I have tried in the past. Granted these are the first high end phones I have tried as all others were in the less then $100 range. Most make my ears hurt after a while. Not these. They are very comfortable. Have I mentioned the sound is just great.

Pricey, yes. Smart shoppers will find them new at a significant discount to the listed price. If you plan to use them at home or for casual travel, then consider the cost/benefit wisely. However, for the frequent traveler where cost is of little import compared to size, weight, and quality, then the E4c's are well worth it. Great product.
